Oh boy... ;)

Welcome to HLP. And yes, there's a way. You need FS2_Open and MediaVP's.

Basically FS2_Open is the ongoing project that is the result of Volition releasing the source code of FreeSpace2 long time ago, and it's current features have progressed far beyond the capabilities of the original FS2 engine. This will, amongst other things, make you able to use whatever your display's native resolution may be.

MediaVP's on the other hand are the result of FreeSpace Upgrade project, which... is dedicated to upgrading FS2 data with more detailed models, textures and effects and to utilize the new abilities of the engine... and you will likely be rather surprised when you see the difference to retail data. :D

Get the Launcher and FS2_Open 3.6.10 RC1 build from this thread. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61891.0.html)

Then, go to this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html) and follow instructions on how to install them (basically download the files, then create a mediavps directory in FS2 directory, then put the VP's there and activate the mod directory.

After you've confirmed that the MediaVP's work correctly with the main FS2 campaign, you can use Turey's Online Installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/) to install a whopload of mods as well as the original Conflict: FreeSpace the Great War converted into a form that makes you able to play it with FreeSpace2 (and FS2_Open).

Technically Turey's installer is supposed to install the MediaVP's as well, but at the moment there are some issues with corrupt downloads where the mediaVP's are concerned, so I suggest you install the MediaVP's manually and other user-made content via the FSOInstaller (it is very handy for downloading a lot of campaigns easily).

If you run into any problems, just give a shout and someone will most likely be around to help you solve it. :)

They are *.exe files. You run them. They replace the FS2.exe, and Launcher.exe replaces the FreeSpace2.exe (old retail launcher application).

Basically you place the fs2_open_*.exe files in your FreeSpace2 directory along with the Launcher.exe, then run the Launcher which is used to configure the settings correctly. From the Launcher, you can Browse to the fs2_open_*.exe build you are using, and then a lot of options opens up for you to configure as you like.

Never, probably. FSOpen uses OpenGL all the way.
