I was curious. What is the difference between 3.6.9 and 3.6.10?
-
- Fixed the dreaded red-alert bug
- Normal map support
- More cool features
-
What do you mean, normal map support?
-
1. Download an FSO build 3.6.10 and the 3.6.10 MediaVPs
2. Run FSO with mod mediavps
3. In the Main Hall, press F3
4. Select a ship (recommended: Demon)
5. In "Render Options", switch on/off normal maps
6. Note the difference

Use the Herc, or the Ulysses, or...lots of ships.
You should see a staggering improvement in quality with normal maps on, if your computer's powerful enough.
-
I can definitely see the difference. Normal maps really do make things look beautiful. ^_^

Or just press CTRL + SHIFT + S

Download this patch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyUgKf9ofU0) and place it to your \mediavps\ folder.

Hey guys, I don't really know who else to go to with this. This will probably come as a surprise to you in more ways that one, but... I'm pregnant.
:wakka:
All due respect, but next time, try not to get admins involved in that kinda jokes :P
-
I find that especially funny as I had to refresh the forum to read your post FreeSpaceFreak since that's exactly what your post said. :p
-
A multi-front assault...I'm liking this year.

And that link doesn't even work today....
-
Sorry to say but it still doesn't work. Stupid April fools day :ick:

Don't click it. Copy-paste the text to your address bar. It'll work that way.

So what is the command line to turn these on...
Is Launcher 5.5d the only one that will enable all the fancy stuff? I have everything turned on, but with 3.6.10 there's no lighting or specular or anything, it's all default. With 3.6.9 everything works great and looks like a million buck.
-
Turn what on? Normal maps? -normal (it is under the "Graphics" list type on the Launcher's Features tab, when a recent enough build is selected)

Make sure you have the MediaVPs selected in the 'mod' tab. Try redownloading them -- it's possible you got a corrupt install.

There are tons of new features. Normal map support is just a subset of the OpenGL Shader Language addition, along with a huge reworking of much of the multiplayer code (PXO lobby is back, Inferno builds work with multiplayer, etc), lots of new SEXPs, some cool autopilot stuff, etc. If you're just playing FS2 the biggest things for you will be the GLSL and the multiplayer enhancements (if you like multi). There have also been many bugs fixed that have been around since even before 3.6.9.

Lemme make sure I understand, Normal Maps give the illusion of depth right?
-
Or the illusion of increased detail. In any case, normal maps == purdy.
-
normal maps are easier to read in the darkness of space , which is handy when your lost :D
-
Short and simple: normal maps make everything look awesome.
-
In 3D modeling, depth = detail?
In my m ind anyway...but we all know how off that can be.
-
In 3D modeling, depth = detail?
Not quite..
In 3Dmodelling Number of polies = detail.
But..
By varying apparent depth you can make it look like there are more polies --> more detail
