Title: New "Name Origin" section
Post by: Mobius on April 03, 2009, 02:20:37 pm
I'm experimenting a new layout of Name Origin sections. Check the changes I made:

What do you think? :)

Very good job there, I always found that section somewhat lacking.

May I use it in other pages?

Guess so. It's better than the current IMHO. More systematic.

Please don't capitalize italicize every single instance of FS references. In the Name Origin sections, you'll be talking about mythological characters' names, not ship classes.

:wtf: Mythological characters' names are proper nouns and should be capitalized anyway?

Sorry, I meant "italicize".

No offense, TopAce, but I doubt yours is a good idea.

As easily noticeable, I'd like to add references to FreeSpace-related stuff in Name Origin sections. In the GTF Ulysses article, for example, I mentioned Cyclops, Calypso, Argo, Charybdis and Circe. As you can see, all these names have importance in the FreeSpace Universe.

I'm going to have to point out that italicizing people's names makes no sense in terms of grammar.

(man that sentence is messed up)

It's not a matter of grammar - names are evidenced if written in italics.

Mobius, you don't italicize people's names.

I do.

We're not discussing people's names here - those are ship classes/names under a FS point of view.

Yeah, he italicizes everything.

Ahem.

You are mixing up things. If you talk about the origins of the GTF Apollo's name, then you start talking about a mythological figure.

Those names are relevant in FS so they should be italicized.

What's wrong in italics? Do they make your eyes bleed or something? Unless you have a damn good reason to remove them from certain names leave them as they are.

No one cares about what is relevant to FS and what isn't in this regard. People's names are not in italics. In the Name Origin sections, you mostly talk about their ship name's (italicized) origins, that is, mythological figures' names (not italicized). If a word's semantics refers to a living being - real or fictional -, it is not to be italicized. If the word's semantics is about a ship's name, it is to be italicized.

I don't know why you insist so much on this, Mobius. You are simply factually wrong. It's not about how a Ravana should be used or what the "three-niner" means in the FS1 intro cutscene.

That helps evidencing links that would be normally marked in white(not noticeable, I may add) after the first visit. I know it's possible to change that setting but most people don't know how to do it and/or can't be bothered to do it.

What should I do, then? Switch from italics to bold?

I have no problems noticing which word is linked and which one isn't. Doesn't your browser underline the links?

Even if it doesn't, the links appear in a different colour...
The white from a link is different from normal text white, well, at least to my eyes.

I might be mistaken though, but the thing here is if a link's visited, they should know...
I mean, they've visited it before.

The white "clicked link" and normal white is very close to me. Maybe clicked link should be a different shade of something.

:wtf: My links are orange when unclicked and white after.
