Im not new to the Freespace universe, been around for quite a while and love the game, as do a few of my friends in a different game called X3 Terran Conflict. Due to a serious lack of modelers we cant get our FS mod too far aside from a few ships the original creator created and managed to get them ingame (whos since been devoted to a different mod and left FS mods by the way side). I was kind of hoping some old website someone here might have that holds some free to use ship models we could 'borrow' with credit going to the creators.
Obviously if we cant find any we will have to stick it out and make our own but figured this might be worth a shot.
And now let the flaming begin lol :beamz:

For models, go here:

-
And if you are going to use them, credit the FS community as well, it will be highly appreciated :)
-
Already planned on giving credit...Just searching for a good 3D model program thats free to use instead of this POS Wings3D @_@
-
I take it you know enough on how to extract the pof.s first into cobs and then into some other middle ground format till you can re convert them into a format x3 uses?
I remember I tried to look into extracting X3, but it was like 2 years ago it was a pain in the ass, so I never explored it. plus no one offered to help when I asked...

Other choices are Blender and Truespace7.6

Truespace wont even open the friggen COB files without some sort of error

Either the cob files are suspect or the Truespace install is borked.

Get lithunwrap, load the model there, assign the texture(s), save it to cob again.

Or just import the POF into lithunwrap in the first place..

Lithunwrap did the trick, thanks guys

I know you solved the problem, but for lesser skilled people (like me :) ) here is another method.
Preconvert the pcx textures to bmp and save the .cob in the same folder as them. That also keeps the texture associations...
-
and there's nothing wrong with wings3D.
-
Im acutally using wings3d to do what I need to do to the models that way they dont look funky in X3 (turrets cant be ported over due to the game engine) but any advice on what programs can convert pcx to bmp would be nice though

Um, irfranview... It's free
Gimp free
Photoshop, not free ;7

One more question and I'll leave you guys alone...How the HECK do I get the textures extracted from POF ships?!?! :hopping:
Some of em dont had a textures folder associated with them as its included in the POF file....Any input would be helpful
-
POF files DON'T have textures IN them, just association data.
All textures for Retail or SCP are in VP's or the Maps folder.
You need to be more specific, cause if you DL'ed someone's single modded ship they should have added the maps in a map folder, or all files in one big folder and you have to sort it.
OR... The maker is using textures they assume you already have from previous or other downloads (like a texture pack, Retail, SCP, or a previous ship with a texture set they reuse.)...
So what's the problem? (in detail).
[EDIT] I had to reread, I almost reposted what I just told you 2 posts ago... :)
Things would go a lot faster for you if you recruited someone from the community.

Very good point. Never thought to check the FS2 maps on my HD. Thanks for the info ^_^

And here's another tip for modders...
KEEP YOUR OLD TEXTURES.
Even when I get tired and delete a game I usually keep some of the assets, like meshes, backgrounds, and most important of all, TEXTURES.
Cause you never know when in the back of your mind you'll go.
"Wait a sec I have a texture that would fit this much better here!"
I must have close to 5k+ textures on my comp, scattered in different folders....
(texture wh*re) :)
