Are they're any good backgrounds that have asteroids and/or debris already in them?
I was thinking of say a background that could be placed behind an asteroid field that is in mission just to add depth and size to it without having the stretch the actual field and therefore reduce the concentration of objects.
Anyone know if anthing like this exists?

INFA makes use of a starfield featuring asteroids. The old version has been released with the old INFA.
INFR1 had an asteroid bitmap, but I think INFA's starfield is better.

Is there any place i could get my hands on the INFA starfield? Would i have to download the entire mod?

You have to DL the entire mod. You can get it from FSMods. :)

That's bad advertising... :p

Making someone download an entire mod for 2 bitmaps and a model he already has is quite frankly the most selfish thing I've seen on this forum.

I forgot about attachments, that's it...

cheers Snail :) does the .pof file go in the data/effects file along with the .dds? or do they live somewhere else?
-
.pof file in data/models
.dds file in data/maps
Are you using the starfield as mod? It's not a good idea to place mods in FreeSpace2/data.

Err, the .dds files go into data\maps. The model (starfield2.pof) goes into data\models. You must then select the model as the Skybox from FRED's backgrounds editor.

:P guess that shows what I know!
Just tried the skybox out it looks good, thanks again. Should make things look more interesting.

Don't forget to use asteroids that match the starfield's texture. That texture shows brown asteroids so using ice ones may lead to odd results.

Is there any way of making planet backgrounds appear behind the skybox, or would they have to be part of the skybox image? It's just i would like planets to be in the mission but looks really odd when they appear to be in the asteroid field.
-
Sadly, there isn't a way to make planets appear behind the skybox short of putting it onto the skybox texture.

I'll see if i can get around it by putting asteroids in front of the planet.
