Yes, you need the retail data. Getting it for free, while possible, is not recommended, and no one here will be able (or willing) to tell you where and how to get it, as we feel that 6 USD at gog.com isn't that much.
I'm sorry to hear that you'll delete everything you've downloaded already, but if you want to enjoy space combat, you could always try one of the total conversions (like The Babylon Projct, or Wing Commander Saga) a try.

Note that even with those, FSO won't work.

Ummm, yes it will, the engine to run the total conversions is FSO, you just won't be able to play any Freespace campaign!

FSO won't. The total conversions will run by themselves but the FS2-related FSO will remain inoperable, until a working (legal) FS2 is installed.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand, the Total Conversions DO NOT use the Freespace Open Engine is what you are saying?

Fail.

I am trying to say that

a) FreeSpace Open requires FreeSpace 2
b) total conversions use the FreeSpace Open game engine
c) total conversions do not use or need FreeSpace 2.

As in, if our friend here doesn't want to pay for proprietary software, his best option is to try the total conversions, like TBP or Wing Commander Saga.

Total conversion: A mod that replaces every single one of the assets that retail FS provides with custom content Example: TBP, WCS, SoL, Diaspora.
Total conversions use the FSO engine, but do not require retail FS to be installed in order to function properly. Flipside of this particular coin is that missions and campaigns designed for Retail FS or anything built on retail FS (Like the MediaVPs, for example) will not work with a total conversion and vice versa.

Which is pretty much what I said to begin with, Total conversions use the FSO engine, but not the assets. Titan said FSO won't work with the Total conversions, but seeing as FSO is the engine, it will work. Like I said, he wouldn't be able to play any Freespace campaigns as that uses the assets, but he will be able to use the engine, ergo FSO. FSO is not the mediavps, FSO is not the campaigns the public have FREDed. FSO is the SCP.

But most certainly Titan meant that total conversions would not help in getting FSO to work.

No, Titan meant that total conversions would not help in getting any Freespace campaigns to work or mediavps in the 3.3gb of data that Destroyer has downloaded.  :P

I'm going to stop communicating now. We're both saying the same thing over and over again and accuse each other of missing the point.

I didn't even bother to read most of that "argument."

Back on topic. How did you originally get FS2, Destroyer?

Let's back up and make sure we're not missing the obvious:

bicous i downloaded the free space 2 open and it was 3.3 GB its taked me 3 Days to download it
What was included in those 3.3 GB of files, Destroyer?

The problem could be as simple as him downloading the full copy of retail FS2 from some shady website, but not running the EXE from the correct directory.

A TC can be run on its own (usually), but it can also be run like a mod using standard FS2_Open, which is what I'm doing for TBP.

/me slaps Androgeos Exeunt around a bit with a large stack of FreeSpace manuals*
Don't do that. Even if it works, it's wrong in principle.
