Title: Great ... Now I have to texture this
Post by: blowfish on April 08, 2009, 01:53:45 am
Some of you may remember...

It's ~25000 polygons (triangulated), and I now enter the not-fun stage, i.e. UV'ing and texturing :shaking:

What is it? An armed cargo box?

I'm not entirely sure what to call it, though I have been calling it "refinery patform" for a while.  Its purpose is to separate and/or refine collected gases (you can't see them, but there are three docks for Zephyrus miners on the bottom).

What's the scale here? It seems a bit small compared to other GTVA installations, if my guess is correct.

Yeah.  IIRC it's ~800m square.  So each side is about the length of a Deimos.

Reminds me of one of the early mods, a gas platform by Sparky.

(BTW - Since when could SketchUp render loik that clay thing?)

It's not rendered in SU.

Didn't think so.

Of course this begs the question, what did he render it in  :wtf:

Does someone come out in a spacesuit and clean the windows?

Seriously though, I like, except for the guns, if that thing is as big as a Deimos on each side, those cannon are probably larger than an Orions' main guns, whereas I would have thought a few anti-fighter weapons would be more appropriate?

Not that turrets in FS follow any particular scale...

True, but it always looks kind of odd having little pew-pew shots coming out of guns that are that size. It's not really a problem, still works, just a suggestion that they looked a wee bit big ;) Something like a Gas refinery would be more likely to attacked by fighters than a cap-ship (I'm thinking pirate raids here, not in times of war), and, to my mind, would be more likely to have anti-fighter defences, but it's all down to personal choice in the end.

TBH I'm not sure whether I'm going to mount modified blobs or flak on it, but you're right about how it is likely to be attacked.  In fact, one mission I have planned for it involves pirate raiders exactly :nervous:

Would be cool to have more then one texture for this station, to reflect it's age or something like that.
I mean, one texture could make the station look like it was build last week, one that tells ya "it's rusted, don't sneeze at it, 'cause it will fall apart", and one that's something in between.

Just an idea... :nervous:

Well, at least we'll have something to use as a small refueling depot now rather than just a Hippocrates or Faustus XD

You mean like the Arcadia or the Ganymede?

No, like the Hippocrates or Faustus.

They are routinely used in fan campaigns as stationary objects, for lack of something better.  :)

Anything is possible, given the texturing skills which I lack :(

I've been watching this for a little while, hoping it'd get developed into something or other. Very cool, and defnitely something we coud use. That said, I'd personally have left it completely unarmed. When's the last time you saw an oil rig with anti aircraft guns on it after all?

Oil rigs generally aren't expected to come under attack at all. Assuming this is a military installation, weaponry isn't a bad idea.

Maybe if there were two versions, one with guns on the pedestals and another with radar dishes or something.

When was the last time RL Oil Rigs were placed in a warzone/contested system. BP and Shell and whatnot don't need AA guns 'caus no-one fights over them...yet (apparently the army conducts exercises that speculate that an enemy would attempt to capture our off-shore oil rigs ... o.O)  I'm pretty sure Fuel Facilities in contested space would be juicy targets for the NTF.

Blowfish, don't worry about the actual LOOK for now.

Once you get it mapped you can decide on a texture then.

Worry about, these are windows, this is the hull, this is alternate hull look, this is piping, ect...

Once it's mapped you can try different "clothes" and see what works best.

That's the quick and dirty way.  :P

Puts earplugs in, in case of rant by real modelers...

That way it mgiht give you more perspective on wha you want to do with it a little quicker. Instead of agonizing over every little piece wrap it up start tweaking and THEN go back and make that perfect high res map with your new focused vision.

Give it seven BFReds.

But seriously, how's the uv'ing/texturing coming?

Did anything ever happen with this out of curiosity Blowfish? It was one model I was really keen to see eventually released.

Well you know how most models tend to stop around the texturing stages, it's pretty much at its end point. :P

Yeah ... I've got it partially UVed and sorta procrastinating the rest ... hopefully I'll find the time to finish it sometime though...

*looks at model* Oooooooh, I think a mod i'm working on has the perfect little place for that *puppy dog eyes Blowfish*

It would depend though on if those docking clamps could also fit the TVWP's Bromios. (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/TG_Bromios)

Looks very much like an early model fringespace started on for a turret ring for base defense.
Haven't gotten back to it in quite some time, your version is pretty nice though.

Huh ... that's interesting ... I've never seen that, but then again, it's not uncommon for me to design something and then for a similar design to pop up a little while later ... odd :wtf:

RazorsKiss made it... about a year and a half ago.
Old news or some such in our area, but like I said, your version it nice in it's own right.
