Title: Can't Install FS2 Open
Post by: davven101 on April 08, 2009, 02:32:42 pm
Ok all.  I seem to be the only person who 1) can't run the installer and 2) can't get the "thinking man's" FS2 Open running.  In other words, I am stuck and need help.  I tried downloading the installer.  I checked my version of java and downloaded the installer.  I extracted the windows version of the installer, but when I click on the FreeSpaceOpenInstaller app, I get an error messege and the installer won't run.  I have also tried the jar version of the installer.  Same story here.  I go into my comand prompt and try to run the installer java -jat C:\FreeSpaceOpenInstaller and get nothing.

I have also tried to download everying one at a time using the "thinking man's" method.  Using this method I get messed up when it comes to downloaded the latest Vp's or nightly build.  I open the launcher and go to the MOD tab and click "Select MOD".  However, from here I can not select the 'mediavps' folder and click ok.  When I clik the mediavps folder, nothing is there and the launcher will not let me click ok.

I am so lost and confused .  In my last effort I wiped everything FreeSpace2 related.  I wiped and reinstalled GOG Freespace 2.  I wiped and reinsitalled java (not that it made a difference).  Now I am looking at a fresh copy of FS2 and I don't know howto add Free Space 2 open without running into the problems I have noted before (as I have done this whole process 3 or 4 times ) .

If anyone has any ideas they would really help.

Thanx,

-Dav

Wow, jeez. Sounds like you're having a really rough time.

Are you on XP, Vista, or something else?

And what error message do you get?

Hmm.

I open the launcher and go to the MOD tab and click "Select MOD".  However, from here I can not select the 'mediavps' folder and click ok.  When I clik the mediavps folder, nothing is there and the launcher will not let me click ok.
It really should work. Could you get us a screenshot of this?

I am running a PC with Windows XP.

The error message I get is as follows:

unable to load C:\docume~1)Dav\Desktop\fs2open\rt\jetrt\XKRdll (referenced from C:\Docume~1\Dav\Desktop\fs2open\FREESP~1.exe)

I get this error when I try to run the windows installer.  Also, I noticed that the FreespaceOpenInstaller is not associate with Java whereas the unpack 200 app is associated with Java.  However, my computer will not allow me to associated the program for some reason.

So. You've got base FS2 installed. That runs fine, right?

If the Java version of the Installer doesn't work, you can always use the .exe version (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip).

unable to load C:\docume~1)Dav\Desktop\fs2open\rt\jetrt\XKRdll
I hope this isn't the folder where you're trying to install FSO (or FS2 for that matter), since having the game on the desktop will cause errors.

well, it seems like the 5th time I wiped and reinstalled I was able to get free space 2 open up and running.  I still have a few glitches (the cutscenes are still old free space 2) and I am still hoping to get FS1 and FS silent threat and other things on the system.  But it is at least a start.  Thanx everyone for your time. and if you have any suggestions about the above I am more than willing to take them as I am new to Free Space Open.

P.S.

No, the folder was not on my desktop.  I put it in C:\games\freespace2

My hope was that this would make things as easy as possible.

After poking through the number of prior posts I will try what  few others before regarding the cutscenes and Fs1.  Sorry for posting the questions first.

An excellent choice. Basically the desktop and My Documents are evilness when it comes to installation locations for games and other software.

the cutscenes are still old free space 2
And will forever be, unless someone with the skills and the hardware decides to recreate them. And even if that happened, the game engine is still (probably) limited to 640x480 in terms of cutscene resolution.
