Hi,
In the last 7 years or so that I haven't been playing Freespace (it's been a while!), a heck of a lot of campaigns have popped up. That's wonderful and exciting, and I'm excited to play through them. So, what are your favorite campaigns and missions? What would you recommend most?
-
Well as far as campaigns go
- Blue Planet
- Transcend/Sync
- Derelict
- Silent Threat: Reborn
There are lots more, check the announcements :)
Missions
- High Noon (Not a form of self-advertising)
- Their Finest Hour
and you'll find plenty of them by looking through www.freespacemods.net
-
Yes, those five campaigns. Definitely. I recommend you play them in chronological order: ST:R - Sync - Transcend - Derelict - BP.

Er. But. They're. Umm... They're not in the same universe... :wtf:

Well
- ST:R, is the earliest
- Sync and Transcend can be played together anytime after ST:R
- Derelict follows the same principle, although Derelict and BP can really be played anytime after finishing FS2 campaign
IMO

Er. But. They're. Umm... They're not in the same universe... :wtf:
They can be defined in chronological order, roughly, nonetheless. We have a rough idea of when each takes place.
And you could place them in the same one, if you really wanted to.

Yeah, but it would be a kind of badly-put together universe... I mean, no references whatsoever to the Nyarlathotep in BP or whatever...

You can also check the Mod Database. There are a couple of campaigns/mods there, too.

I know where to find campaigns, thank you. :) That's not the problem. The problem is that I feel like a first-timer at a gourmet restaurant with a 200 page menu. So many appetizing choices, but where to begin? :D
Derelict was (is) definitely on my list: I played the original back in 2001 or so, and of all the campaigns I played back then it's the one I still remember vividly.
I just finished ST:R, and was indeed completely floored.
-
Don't forget
Poland Procyon Insurgency (http://pi.hard-light.net). You may remember it from your first stay here. It's finally been released, 6 years in the making. ;)

The campaign has been updated and it is now voice acted. I recommend you give it another go. You also might want to try Awakenings.

Sync, Homesick and Transcend are the best campaigns outside of Derelict by some margin for me. Very few mods in any of them but the writing's fantastic.
-
In the Cold Element universe, the BWO demo, Twilight, Warzone, and Derelict are all good.
In the Blaise-Russel-verse, Shrouding the Light, Shrouding the Light: Origins, and Echo Gate are also very good.
I also recommend Inferno Release 1. The first half of the campaign is rather mediocre but it picks up later. And you get to blow a crapload of stuff up.
-
I tried Derelict but was soon unable to continue because of some kind of bug. Didn't felt like doing ctrol+shift+s for 40+ missions afterwards.
Might also be worth checking out the wingcommander saga and the babylon 5 mods.

Lemme guess: you got to the first "loop" mission and the game crashes when it tries to load it.

My recommendations are:
- Just Another Day: Super Special Edition
- Just Another Day 2: Electric Boogaloo
- Just Another Day 3: Shivans on a Plane
- Derelict
- Blue Planet: Age of Aquarius
- The Procyon Insurgency
- Warzone
- Into the Depths of Hell
- Into the Depths of Hell 2
- Into the Depths of Hell 3
- Into the Depths of Hell 4
- The FreeSpace Port
- Silent Threat: Reborn
- Tides of Darkness
- Terran-Vasudan War Project Demo
- Alcibiades' Gamble Demo
- Shivans! v0.21
And, as a novelty...
- The Second Great War Part 2
-
I also recommend Inferno Release 1. The first half of the campaign is rather mediocre but it picks up later. And you get to blow a crapload of stuff up.
Dunno about blowing stuff up, but it does pick up. Along with Blue Planet, it's one of the few campaigns that strongly capture the feel of FS2.
Transcend/Sync, Derelict (SCP Edition), ST:R, Blue Planet, JAD1 2 and 3, Deus Ex Machina, Tides of Darkness.
-
Blue Planet's the best we've got, I think. (disclosure: I am only on the dev team as a voice acting coordinator)
Transcend and Windmills.
Derelict.
The BWO demo itself is really not too shabby.
You already played ST:R.
-
My recommendations are:

If you do play this one though, don't forget about the single demo missions accessible from the tech room.

No actually, it was in that nebula (dream sequence?), where they hear beta 1 and talk about him a bit. Then nothing happens. Nothing at all.
-
Did you find him and follow him?
-
Yay, mention! :D

Ah yes, especially The Face of BoE (Obligatory). ;)
-
The ones I remember off the back of my mind are Transcend and the JAD Trilogy. I also finished ST:R, which in my opinion is done with ingenuity, though I would recommend playing the original Silient Threat first (if you can), as flawed and broken as it is, if only to see the rather large differences done between the two.
Transcend is the first thing, out of the several dozen horror movies and games I've ever seen, to actually scare me. The writing and atmosphere is sublime. I insist you play that one. Sync, the prequel (I think?) is much the same, though I think Transcend is definitely scarier.
JAD, whether you get some of the in-jokes relating to Freespace 2 or the HLP community or not, is simply hilarious. That's also another one I insist you play. It has the most hilarious jokes I've seen in a very long time.
Inferno is worth playing simply because of the spectacle of it being a spiritual incarnation of a Freespace 3. I never liked it, personally, probably due to the fact that most of the sound affects were ripped right off of Descent 3. (:p)
I'm kidding. Inferno is really good, though most would agree the story is rather linear at best.
-

Still, I'd like to see how INFSCP, BWO and MT face off together when they are all finally released given that they are all related in some way.
