Downloaded TBP 3.4b Final and installed it without a problem. When I use the launcher to launch it I received 3 errors:
Error: The required OpenGL extension '~p' is not supported by...
File:D:\C++\Freespace\fs2_open 3.6.9 - BtRL\code\graphics\gropenglextension.cpp
Line: 392

After I press OK three times the game actually starts BUT after the intro movie it's all messed up. I have two blacks bars (bottom and top) and this flickery red box (middle), mouse cursor isn't showing. When I blindly try to navigate to the ready room to start a mission I receive error messages that a lot of .anim files are missing.
I have updated my graphics drivers, I've tried OpenGL/Direct3D8 and a lot of other option combinations and nothing seems to do anything. And that directory D:\C++ doesn't even exist.
Using Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium (all updated), DirectX 10.0, Nvidia GF 8600M GS 179,48, AMD TL-60 (It's an Aspire 7520G laptop).
-
That directory reference has got nothing to do with your computer, but with the computer that built the executable.
Now, could you select a debug executable in the Launcher (should be named fs2_open_3_6_9d.exe), run it (you will get a ****load of error messages, click through them), and then post the log file (<your TBP directory>\data\fs2open.log) here, using

tags?
-
Select the fs2_open_3_6_9_debug file in the launcher and clicked run. Received one error then Vista decided it stopped responding.

Hmmm....It should work...At least I don't see anything wrong with it (except for the missing OGL extensions)....
Let's try this. Go here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,62210.0.html), and download the regular and Inferno builds for Windows, then use one of them. If it crashes again, run debug build and post the log. One problem with the old 3.6.9 builds is that they don't generate md5 hashes for the vp files, making it harder to tell if they are corrupted (they shouldn't be, but one never knows).
If the you get the same error again, you could go here (http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/) download and run the OpenGL extensions viewer, and tell us what it says.
-
Inferno doesn't work.

Regular doesn't work either.
Problem is with GL extension that it cannot find?
-
Yeah, which is weird, because your card should be capable of doing whatever FS2 requires...
-
I know. So if it cannot find the bloody extensions can I like "manually find them for the stupid launcher"? Or disable some thingymajiggies so it won't even try to find them?
I installed this from a new download after updating my GFX card drivers than the previous so I doubt that the files would be corrupted.
-
Sadly, No. Which is why I recommend getting the OpenGl Extensions Viewer (http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/). Running that could tell you what's going wrong, and also give you the opportunity to fix it. Right now, I'm assuming that there's something wrong with your driver.

-
Yeah, pretty much. Which, again, leaves me scratching my Head. There is something interfering with the driver and OGL here, but I can't tell you what it is. someone wiser than me will have to tell you what, and how to fix it, though.
EDIT: Waaaaaitaminit. Are you using the latest driver provided by Acer, and if so, how recent is it, and can you use the latest nVidia driver?
-
When I first tried TBP I was using Acer's driver. Which was 7.15.11.154. Then I installed the notebook driver, and downloaded TBP again if the earlier one was corrupted, for my card from Nvidia's site. Which is 7.15.11.7948 and that is the latest.
Also updated DirectX and restarted lappy but still nada.

Soooo anyone know a solution to this? Anyone? Someone? :shaking:
Pretty please? :nervous:
/emote goes back spamming refresh
-
hm
I'd set my money on bad driver too. Still...
Check the launcher's settings.
1.) always browse to the correct build you want to use at the moment
2.) never forget to press apply
Check the Video settings and the Features tab. You might play around with those settings, for example change the driver. Have some patience until FUBAR or some of the other code geniuses arrives, one of them should be able to solve it.
-
I'm just confused as to how can the driver be bad if it's the latest one available and all the other games I play work fine without problems.
Yes I'm 100% sure that I've selected the correct build and have always spammed the apply button. And I have played with the video and features settings till my heart content and had enough. Doesn't work.
Also tried the Wing Commander Saga Prologue thingy and it's the same problem and errors. So most likely driver related but still confused how it could be the driver when everything else works fine.
-
ive had this problem with a windows install , but llets hope that it doesnt go down the same root......
try a forceware driver for your note book , have a look here but before you install completely uninstall the old driver and carefully follow instructions on the site
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers
good luck and if you need any extra help there are usually a few ppl in irc
-
Sorry I read it yesterday and didn't see anything that wasn't already pointed out. One thing you might try is totally uninstalling the video drivers and then reinstalling. Normally that only happens if you change video cards though.
Direct3d although an option in the launcher isn't supported. So it is possible that your drivers are corrupt or even a hardware issue with just OpenGL (it's happened to someone before) even if other stuff is working properly.
-
I'm just confused as to how can the driver be bad if it's the latest one available and all the other games I play work fine without problems.
How many of your games use OpenGL though? Most Windows games are Direct 3D based.
-
Why develop a graphics engine that uses OpenGL when most of the platforms it would be used are more or less designed for D3D? :doubt:
See what a did there?
-
OpenGL is cross platform. Direct3d is mickysoft only.
-
Which means that this game couldn't support Mac OS X or Linux if it was D3D only.
Besides it's not that we don't want to support D3D and more that we can only find OpenGL graphics coders.
-
Well Mac OS X and Linux aren't meant for gaming. :P
Shame though. I really liked the 2.something version of TBP and was getting curious again if 3.4 was even better. Guess I'll never find out. Thanks for all the help and cheese. :(
-
Kara you still got that Direct3d 3.6.9 build lying around?
-
Uh, I have it. Stand by.
Edit: Here we go (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/BtRL_D3D_Exes.zip).
Well Mac OS X and Linux aren't meant for gaming.
But FSO doesn't want to just lick Microsoft's booty. We want all gamers to be able to enjoy these games, regardless of OS.
-
mmmm reading this and after posting the driver updates i can only assume that windows has lost the open gl stuff , i say this because it has happened to me .....
other ppl have managed to play this on xp and vista as well as mac os and linux ; and also there are more games out there that use open gl than you think........
my solution when this happened was to do a fresh install of my system and viola it worked.......
before you do it though i didnt see but does any other version of then fs/fsopen engine work?
as before goodluck

and looking at this it shows that you have a limited driver ie one that has been moded by acer , you should at least have 33% of opengl 3 availible and igf im not wrong even more.......

To Andrick: Actually this driver that I'm using is from Nvidia (Nvidia's site -> notebook driver), not Acers.
Fresh install as in format everything and start from scratch? Not a snowball's chance in hell for that to happen. I need this lappy for my studies and i'm not going to play (pun not really intented) around with it.

the drivers i mentioned are nvidia ones that have been modded for laptops ......
i personally no longer believe it is a driver issue ( in the scense that your driver all be it old does have the open gl 2.1 support , my laptop that is even older nvidia7300 has the same support as yours but i have 30% of the ogl 3 (tecnicaly not needed) this using the drivers that i linked too) i understand the not wanting to reinstall but this is what i had to do one one occasion , my system had lost the ability to recognise the open gl extensions in the driver (after a ms update, i tried removing the update and restoring the system to before but no go .... so i spent the 3 hours putting my system back together and it worked ....
so i hope you find another solution .......

ive just rethought ....it is a driver issue , you have 19 extensions and i have 144
please try one of the drivers from the link i posted earlier
if it doesnt work yo vcan go back to your original nvidia one....
once again goodluck

I concur. Your drivers are all bollocksed up and the OpenGL diagnostics even tells that to you.
You definitely won't need to re-install windows, but I would suggest removing the GPU drivers with DriverCleaner or some other equivalent tool, then install a driver that actually works...
You're not going to get much working with this:
(...)
No ICD registry entry
The current OpenGL driver doesn't expose the SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows (NT)/CurrentVersion/OpenGLDrivers registry entry. Unable to detect the driver version, driver revision name and filename.
No compiled vertex array support
This may cause performance loss in some applications.
No multitexturing support
This may cause performance loss in some applications.
No secondary color support
Some applications may not render polygon highlights correctly.
No S3TC compression support
This may cause performance loss in some applications.
No texture edge clamp support
This feature adds clamping control to edge texel filtering. Some programs may not render textures correctly (black line on borders.)
No vertex program support
This feature enables vertex programming (equivalent to DX8 Vertex Shader.) Some current or future OpenGL programs may require this feature.
No fragment program support
This feature enables per pixel programming (equivalent to DX9 Pixel Shader.) Some current or future OpenGL programs may require this feature.
No OpenGL Shading Language support
This may break compatibility for applications using per pixel shading.
No Frame buffer object support
This may break compatibility for applications using render to texture functions.
Few texture units found
This may slow down some applications using fragment programs or extensive texture mapping.

but does it work!!!!!
Sorry for the late reply but I was distracted playing TBP. :D
Yes indeed it does work. AFAIK the remnants of older drivers were conflicting with the new ones that I installed causing the fubarness. But all is well now.
-
great news .... multiplayer is thursday nights at 8pm gmt ..............
also have a look at zathras ....;
-
TADADADA!!!
One more mighty victory of the open-ended support :)
Thanks andicirk!

your welcome send all cheques and dancing girls to my house........;;;;;
ps does that meen i get a tbp badge lol
-
probably not  At least not for these generous support actions.

@Darkmist: Look in the nvidia control panel applet and make sure that the OpenGL Extention Limit (not sure of exact name though) is off. The problem you are having is simply from that option being on by default rather than off like it should be. It should only ever be on for particular game profiles (to support certain older games).
