I remember playing freespace when it first came out and being blown away by how great it was. It reminded me so much of one of my favorites of all time, Tie Fighter :)
So just recently I saw the video for the upcoming MMO Black Prophecy, and it kind of made me wet my pants a little :) I actually had such a hankerin' for a game of this type, only to find an amazing community of folks who are keeping Freespace alive with some exceptional enhancements. So now I'm really really excited to sit down and play the game(s) once again.
My thing is that I want to make this look as -good- as it possibly can. I yesterday downloaded the FSO Installer and got pretty much everything. I've been reading a lot of stuff today regarding it all and am tweaking everything to make it look pretty.
My main issue right now is that I cannot figure out how to enable normal mapping. Is that automatic with the latest release of FS2 Open? (3.6.10). Every guide and place that I've gone to says to enable normal maps within the launcher, yet it doesn't exist under my graphics tab in the launcher for me (5.5c). If I add -normal to the custom flags, when trying to start the game it says it doesn't recognize the command. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,62233.0.html - new post that says enable normal maps)
Anyone have any help? Do I already have the normal maps enabled and I just dont know? Im salivating to play this game with as nice of graphics as I can.... and I really want to get started! :)
Thank you in advance, and thanks to all that make this possible. I'm amazed and excited :)

You'll need a (recent enough) 3.6.10 build for normal maps. Download 3.6.10 RC2 (link in my signature, grab the regular version) and point the Launcher towards it. The Enable normal maps option will then appear in the Graphics list under Features in the Launcher.

As for "making it look the best it can" : look here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53294.0.html). Though your computer may not be able to run it full-on.

Thanks! It's indeed all working and looks amazing. Very very pleased :)

Once you're done with the main Freespace 2 campaign, Freespace 1, and Silent Threat: Reborn, try out Derelict, Transcend, Blue Planet, Windmills, the Blackwater Operations demo, and (if you like mad difficulty) The Procyon Insurgency.
Those are considered among the best campaigns out there right now.

:welcomered:
Don't forget Inferno, Sol: A History, Sync, Shrouding the Light, Warzone, Just Another Day 1-3, Deus Ex Machina, Twilight, and everything else I'm probably forgetting that's listed on the wiki.
