Title: New Computer
Post by: eliex on April 14, 2009, 03:12:36 pm
Hello all. Recently I had bought a completely new desktop computer to replace my original laptop which I used to play FreeSpace.

My specs are
- 500 GB HDD
- Intel Core Duo E8400 3GHz.
- Nvidia 9800GT graphics card
- 2GB RAM.

Is it possible with this computer to run the 3.6.10 mediavps including the adv.effects and have smooth gameplay? My internet connection is getting quite low so I'd just like to know which mediavps I can run before downloading.
Thanks in advance.  :)

That computer is not far behind mine, and mine runs FSO beautifully, even with the mediaVPs.  That should be perfect.

The 9800GT alone makes the system worthy of MediaVPs with MV_Advanced and normal maps.

The fact that it is a 3ghz Core proc adds smooth gravy of awesome on top of it.

I'm running 3.6.10 with all the graphical goodies on @1024x768 (I dont like higher resolutions with freespace) and have a constant fps of 120 (with vsync off that is)
E6600 (OC at 3.14ghz)
Geforce 8800GTX
2GB ram
So to answer your question, yes your pc should run everything juuuust fine.  :)

Dude, I ran the 3.6.10 AdVPs on a Radeon 9550/2GB PC133 SDRAM/P4 1.5Ghz/1280*1024/AA+AF at max.

My New laptop has a 9600GT and it runs everything at 100s of FPS at 1920*1080.

Yeah.  The one thing I love about the MediaVPs: they may look beautiful, but they don't require a super-duper-mega-ultra tricked-out rig. That in and of itself makes it better than most games out there.

They're optimized well, I assume?

You have some top of the line products out there, and I bet it didn't cost you a huge fortune, either. FS2 Open will run with little effort on that beastie of yours.

Heck, I have an AMD Sempron that runs at 2.2 GHz with a Geforce 7600GS and 1GB of RAM and FSO runs smoothly for me; having a SATA drive is always a help. :D

In my opinon, these are my recommended minimum system requirements for FSO with mediaVPs:

1.4 GHz AMD/Intel CPU
512MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 6200 128MB or better (at least AGP)
Windows XP or Linux
5GB of hard drive space; that is if you get like 10 mods and the mediaVPs on top of retail
stereo sound or headphones (of course)
mouse or joystick to fly with (of course)
broadband Internet for FS2Net

Thanks for your opinions.  :)
Guess I better start downloading and playing before the school term starts again!

I'm running FS2_Open on a MacBook:

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Intel GMA X3100 144 MB VRAM
150 GB HDD

That alone can run everything that FS2_Open has to offer, although mods like BP and SGWP2 can slow things down a little.

if your old computer has everything you can just copy and paste everything across there is no need to reinstall....(this is easier in windows than in linux but is possible )

Indeed. If your old rig isn't completely borked, please copy the FreeSpace stuff from there to the new computer. Saving precious bandwidth is mighty fun, you see. And it should be equally easy on any OS. Just copy the entire \freespace2\ folder, then possibly fiddle with the settings and that's it.

If you have vista on the new computer, remember to download SP1 or else the security center might tell you FS if a invalid program.

( one of the reasons I upgraded to XP, from vista, they didn't have sp1 for vista yet)

All in all, the specs look magnificent. Just one small thing- you could still go for a bit more RAM, especially if you're running Vista, but 2 GB *is* sufficient.

Make sure you use OpenGL!!!

My comp is: 2.4ghz E6600, 768MB 8800GTX, 4GB RAM, 2x500GB, Vista x64, and it runs really choppy with Direct3D selected.. make sure you follow the instructions for setting up the SCP right.

I, too, am getting a new computer after I return from my trip (will be back home the following Saturday after this coming Saturday which is when we're leaving for our trip); this computer is going to be a Macbook Pro which I'll be able to dual boot into Windows XP. Will post its specs after I get it.

Hey y'all! I'm back home from my trip! I saw some space battle photos [Star Wars] and photos of little colorful aliens with big black eyes, also - and I'd say they're all the good guys assisting us in these FreeSpace missions.  :D

Now to be on the serious side - it's May now and I'll be ordering my new computer any day now from Apple.com's website.

EDIT - turns out I have to wait until after the Apple expo? Perhaps
