Title: So. Uhm.
Post by: sigtau on April 21, 2009, 09:20:36 pm
Hi.  :nervous:

My name is Will, I'm from South Carolina, and ever since I first played the  TSM-103C mission, I've been addicted to FreeSpace and the Descent games.

I'm fairly experienced in FRED2 Open, and have other programming experience (2 years of C, 4 years of Java, another 4 years of PHP, and I can't count how many I've done web design with CSS and HTML).

So I guess you could say that I'm the incoming jump signature with a nerdy configuration?  Or perhaps that applies to the whole board?  :P

All joking aside, I'm glad to be a part of HLP.  You can call me sigtau, Sigma, TMS, or just Will if you prefer.  Whatever works, right?

What's the blinkin' forum code for the welcome beam again...?

Welcome! Pro tip: suck up to Goober and the mods, they've got God-level clearance to your account and have a habit of sticking people with bizarre custom titles.

Yet thus far I remain unscathed. Woo!

It's an in-game reference to Freespace 2 a.k.a. the nerdiest reference you can make :P

"Incoming jump signature! Hostile configuration!"
God, the only reason that line isn't EXTREMELY annoying is because it gets spammed so much that it gets completely tolerable.

Great jumping bananamonsters!  >10 replies in under 30 minutes.  I would say this is the most active forum I've ever joined.

Aside from that, thanks, guys.  :)

Personally, I preferred "HOSTILES APPROACHING FAST!" over "INCOMING JUMP SIGNATURE..." and whatever.   But I couldn't have made such a stupid nerdy joke with the first one.

By the way, I have a campaign in the works.  And yes, it's yet another campaign continuing from the FreeSpace 2 storyline and where it left of, but I've got a more creative story in the works than a crapload of Battle of Endor style missions (there will be only one mission to that effect, but a lot of the game involves good use of the bomber wings).

But that's a story for another post.  I'll save that for tomorrow's writing, it's about 1 hour until midnight on my end.  And it's the last quarter of school.   I need sleep.

I like the fact the FS analogies end up getting used so much in serious conversation around here, since it's the common ground you can be totally sure of. :D

Except for zack.

I'm fairly experienced in FRED2 Open, and have other programming experience (2 years of C, 4 years of Java, another 4 years of PHP, and I can't count how many I've done web design with CSS and HTML).

Yeah, that's all fantastic.

Why is there no SCP avatar under your nickname, and why aren't you slaving away at the Open code?

Someone better change this for Great Justice.

To be honest, the code base is a bit intimidating if you're coming at it for the first time.
This is probably going to start a flame war, but I reckon the documentation could use a bit of effort - it's hard to find exactly what you're looking for, and you really need to have an idea of the whole codebase in order to do anything - e.g. the scripting can affect the HUD - I didn't know this when I first started looking at it, and I'm still not entirely sure how it affects the HUD  :p
There are also some things that aren't really documented at all. Feel free to flame away folks.
Title: Re: So. Uhm.
Post by: karajorma on April 24, 2009, 04:57:58 am
No need for flames, it's a well accepted fact that the documentation for the SCP really needs a lot of work. The problem is that

1) Coders tend to assume too much is common knowledge and write poor documentation as a result.
2) Time spent on documentation is time not spent fixing bugs. Given that the number of active coders never seems to rise above 4 or 5 at any one time that is a big problem.

What might work is if people who can read code but not write it yet familiarise themselves with the code base by writing documentation. Simply pick a branch of the code with lots of under detailed stuff and start adding stuff to the wiki. Looking through the commit log can quickly give you an understanding of what the feature is for. Reading the code will help you understand how it all ties in together with everything else.

Oh wait, nope. Tabling/FRED is the only thing I can grasp at the moment, and the documentation on that is for the most part fine.
