Having just re-loaded FSO after a looooonnnnnggggg break, I have grabbed all the latest updates and such, and wondered if 3D cockpits had been done for any of the upgraded ships? I love flying from a cockpit view rather than just a blank hud view, and was surprised when none of the stock ships seem to show it.
Are they there and just need turning on....or do the ships need modifying to make a cockpit on the high detail model?
-
For the perseus I know there is one, and I think several mods utilise them.
To enable them you need to create a table file called (whatever)-shp.tbm and put in in data/tables, then enter
#Ship Classes
$Name: GTF Perseus
+nocreate
$Flags: ( "show ship" )
$Name: GTF Myrmidon
+nocreate
$Flags: ( "show ship" )
#End
And add whichever ships you want, some ships don't have a proper viewpoint so don't go adding everything :P

Myrmidon? Since when does the Myrmidon have a cockpit model?
-
Well it doesn't really have the cockpit model, but when you look around you can see the horizontal stabilisers and the strobe lights on them and the tail, so it's alright. Try it yourself and you'll understand.
-
Ah... I know what you're talking about, even without trying it. I just didn't think of it.
-
Will cockpits be fixed up at some point? (and maybe each fighter/bomber having a different look)
(like basically, integrating the normal HUD into them not that drawn in HUD, the one that is part of the ship's textures)
btw some look pretty good now like the Zeus and Nephilim (I have youtube vids of it if you want to see look for them).
-
At some point ... maybe. Let's just say that the coders AND the modelers/texturers have higher priorities at this point though, so don't expect anything anytime soon.

The Nephilim? It hasn't even been HTLed yet :P

I know I don't mean that lol, I mean the cockpit view is cool...also I also think that getting all the ships and stuff HTLed is more important. Can't wait to see what the Nephilim, and for that matter the Demon, Dragon, and well, most Shivan ships, look like when they are HTLed.

And by that time there will probably be some amazing new feature that will make all of our current assets obsolete :P

Shadows :nervous:

Shadows :nervous:
Damage decals. :blah:

Damage decals. :blah:
Normal-mapped damage decals (so to give an indentation into the target ship) with persistent explosion effects so heavily damaged ships will appear to be on fire.
-
That would be so insanely awesome
-
That would be so insanely awesome
So would Duke Nukem Forever.
In the meantime, if you want normal-mapped decals, you can go play F.E.A.R. ;)

Hello there I played FS1 back when it was new and just recently discovered FSO. WOW just WOW guys. The differences are amazing!
Back on topic. So does anyone have a list of the craft that work with cockpits? If not I will put all the craft into this file and test each one and post my findings back to this thread.
Thanks.
Moose.

Artemis, Artemis D.H., Myrmidon and Boanerges don't have cockpit, though you can try to play with "Show ship" on Boanerges and Myrmidon.
Also, none of Vasudan (nor Shivan) ships have a cockpit.
-
Shivan ships would look horrible with a cockpit.
-
Well...it could look decent but then you'd have to somehow fit a Shivan into there.
-
If you look at the fighters, you'll notice that none of them actually have cockpit canopies/windows.
Maybe shivans fly their ships with cameras?
-
Who knows if they even sit down? Look at them, I can't imagine THAT sitting down :P

I've been trying to get the cockpit views to work but nothing seems to change when I make the file in my data/tables folder. Is there something else I need to do? I'm running the lastest official build too.
