Shouldn't Terran ships deserve better names? :nervous:
-
Like...? Amaterasu sounds pretty good (and above all, different). There is no reason that all ship's names have to come from european mythology...
As always, YMMV, of course.
-
Uh who uses all "European Mythology"
Shivans- Hindu
Vasudans- Egyptian
Terrans- Greco-Roman
Who's lumping Greco-Roman as European?

It isn't? What about Fenris, Mjolnir, Loki, Boadicea and Iceni?

First of all, I doubt Amaterasu sounds good. This happens mainly because of the noticeable difference between that name and the others.
Also, naming an extremely important ship "Amaterasu" is basically carrying on with the Icanus' main issue - the name. Why would be the symbol of Terran pride and hope have a totally unknown name everyone would ":wtf" at? It's much smarter to use names of prominent importance.

A number of Norse names are also used in FreeSpace. Overall, it's the European names that are used (giving the influence of Greco-Roman culture on most European populations).

You'd have to partially exclude Boadicea and Iceni from the list, because those two names are connected to Latin and Roman culture.

I think Leviathan also falls into Nordic category.
Iceni and Boadicea are not from mythology ,Iceni was a name of
Celtic tribe ,and Boadicea (if fact Boudica) was it's queen.
As for the ship itself ,are there any problems?
Esarai said there will be download link in a few days ,but he was last active over week ago.
I wonder what could have stopped him.

Maybe there are some japanese people still alive? Maybe some of them pushed that name through? Doesn't matter much, though. I like the name, you don't. Let's leave it at that.

:wtf: From wikipedia: The Iceni or Eceni were a Brythonic tribe who inhabited an area of Britain corresponding roughly to the modern-day county of Norfolk between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD.
Boudica (also spelled Boudicca), formerly known as Boadicea and known in Welsh as "Buddug") (d. AD 60 or 61) was a queen of the Iceni tribe of what is now known as East Anglia in England, who led an uprising of the tribes against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire.
More connected to celtic culture, IMHO.
As for Leviathan:
Leviathan, is a Biblical sea creature referred to in the Old Testament (Psalm 74:13-14; Psalm 104:26; Job 41; Isaiah 27:1). The word leviathan has become synonymous with any large sea monster or creature. In the novel Moby-Dick it refers to great whales, and in Modern Hebrew, it means simply "whale".

No doubt there will be heirs of Japanese/Chinese people at the time of FreeSpace but what's the point in using nearly unreadable names? The vast majority of FSers lives in the West.
About the Iceni/Boadicea: doesn't the description you posted make the connection to the Romans even more prominent? "Greco-Roman" doesn't necessarily stand for Latin/Greek characters/beasts/gods, only - anything connected to those two cultures can be classified as Greco-Roman. Both the Romans and Greek did not limit their knowledge to their own cultures and populations.
Leviathan, just like Cain, Abel, Lucifer, Eva and so on, follow one of the most noticeable naming conventions. I've always though Leviathan would have been an appropriate name for a Shivan ship.

Why do you always have to start random debates wherever you go? :P
-
Just because the Romans wrote about them doesn't mean that they are part of Rome's mythology/cultural legacy. So, while roman records are one source for our knowledge of the Iceni people, it doesn't change the fact that they were celtic.
Question: is Arminius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arminius) part of the roman legacy as well? Or is he part of the german cultural legacy?
As asian names go, Amaterasu isn't that bad. But why should I defend it? It's what the ship's designer chose to call it, several weeks ago IIRC. Feel free to dislike it. And "almost unreadable"? Surely you are exaggerating.
-
"Karuna" definitely isn't Western. :nervous:

What's the big deal how the AUTHOR wants to name his/her work? Nothing whatsoever prevents people from renaming the ship in their missions and campaigns.
/me gives Mobius a slap on wrists

From the other thread:

This one is not random. The others weren't random. Replies make them random. Random.

You also need to take account of the names and their usage. What did the Iceni and Boadicea represent for the Romans? Accordingly, what did the NTF and Bosch represent for the GTVA? Don't you see the obvious connection? It's from the Roman/GTVA perspective.
They're a connection to rebels which wouldn't have made sense from a celtic point of view. It's their importance from a Roman point of view that counts here.

I'm not asking for a name change here. I will not pretend the Icanus to have a different name, also.
The fact that I accept a name as the one given by the ship's creator doesn't necessarily mean that I agree on finding that name appropriate and/or good.
