I need to apologize ahead of time, I am a rather large noob at the moment so I again must apologize if the answer to my question is patently obvious.
I hear of powerful graphical mods, and even when I go to go the SCP page on Wikipedia i can see screenshots of the awesomeness, but I don't seem to be able to find any single mods for just graphical upgrades. If someone could point me in the right direction I would be much obliged, I have a pretty powerful computer too, so I want it ALL.
Also, a smaller problem that I'm probably going to fix on my own soon, but whenever I try to open FS2 Open it tells me: "Invalid MOD ini multiple mod parameter, only -mod calls are allowed"
-
graphical upgrades are mostly found in the new MediaVp's that the FSU team made, you can find the VP files and the instructions on how to install it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html)
If you mean only mods... well it depends, most of the mods have some upgrades but not as much as the Mediavp's... maybe the most graphic heavy would be either Blue Planet or PI.
For the mod thing, check the lines you wrote in the mod spot in the Launcher (the only place where you can type commands) there you should have something missing... post the lines and we can help you with that.
-
hey I had that problem once... it was because a mod folder had a hyphen ( - ) in it, i renamed it without the hyphen and edited other mod.ini files that referenced it. Is it the cause of your problem?
-

Well, I can't open the launcher because it gives me that error.
-
What you're looking for are the MediaVPs. Check the Freespace Upgrade Project forum. (Be careful, it's easy to get a corrupt download.)

Throw launcher6.ini to the recycle bin and then try again.

Freespace can't really be referred to in terms of mods. mods are basically resources (like new ships and effects) for people that make campaigns. Though it can be considered a mod, very few mods (in the traditional sense) exist without an accompanying campaign.
The only big 'traditional' mod is the mediavps- which are the graphical enhancements that can be used with just about anything.

Still nothing. It probably has something to do with some of the mods I've recently installed, leaving some of their residue in there that's messing it up. Here's a screen shot of the folder to help: (http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh141/Psycholian/scrnshot.jpg)

Okay, good rule of thumb:
Mod material does not, under any circumstances, go in your main FS2 directory. Put it all in subfolders, sorted by mod, then select those folders with the launcher.
This includes the MediaVPs.
-
mmm might be the FSport vps you have flying around over there, save fsport3:1.vp ; fsport-missions.vp ; and mv_core.vp to a different folder before trying any further.
-
That's what I figured, but I couldn't get some of them to work without doing that. I moved the files out. It still doesn't work, but that probably contributed to cleaning it up. The thing is, I'm not quite sure anymore what does and does not belong in there anymore.
-
1. Remove launcher.ini and mod.ini from your \freespace2\ folder.
2. What are devil.dll, ilu.dll and ilut.dll? They most certainly have nothing to do with FreeSpace.
-
Have you run the installer? Redoing it might help
-
He's got 3.6.5 in there. That points to it being a really old install. Install RC2 from my sig, run the debug build, and upload fs2_open.log from /data.

In addition I deleted all the previous versions of Open and FRED.
Good News: The launcher works
Bad News: Open debug doesn't. Well, it does kinda, says: "Unrecognized command line parameter -2d_poof, continue?" Yes, opens it but closes a split second thereafter, saying some really long error to do with a Cain's weapon systems
-
That's fine -- now go grab the log file from /data.
-
Data has a lot of stuff in it. Mostly empty folders, but out of the files there there is no "fs2_open.log" or anything like it.
-
Hrm. Can you post that error with the Cain?
-
he means run fs so that you get that error again, then just paste it in here. It automatically is put in your clipboard. :)

I get a similar one with various ships in every now and then. They tend to go away though.
-
Looks like an error with the mvps, judging by the reference to the shivan missle.
-
Okay, since I got the new versions os FRED and Open I decided to open the launcher (which now works) and switch from the directory it was set to (3.6.9) to the newer one (3.6.10), but doing this gives me the same error I had in the first place.
-
You're not selecting a directory the new build is located in, you're literally selecting the new build, which should be present in your main FSOpen folder.
Whoa, man. Can someone give him a picture of a clean FS2 install with only the Launcher and an FSOpen build present, so he can get his directory to look like that?
Make sure you have no mods selected in the launcher. Give us your command-line options.
Lastly, dumb as this sounds, can you ensure that you're running everything from C/Games/Freespace 2?

Yea, sorry, that's what I meant.
Make sure you have no mods selected in the launcher. Give us your command-line options.
Only the 'Welcome' and 'Features' tabs have anything of note (and I use the term 'of note' lightly with the features tab), all the others are completely blank. Devoid of all windows, buttons or anything.

.....I was afraid this might come back to haunt me...
But why? It's so much easier to have all my programs in Program Files. Does it really effect it that much?
Jesus, I'm think of throwing my entire FS2 folder down the drain and reinstalling it...

If you can.. it would be better indeed... sure you have to do it all over again, but you'll be certain it's completely clean.
if you still want to check what you should have on the Freespace folder.. look:

Well, as a first step, make sure your launcher is in the same directory as the executable you're picking (FS2Open 3.6.10 RC2, not a debug build) and that you've actually got that selected. So they'd be in the same folder (c/program files/games/freespace 2)
I don't actually remember if having it in /program files is a big deal.

That might not be a bad idea. Reinstall Freespace 2. Recommend Directory is C:/Games. If that directory doesn't exist crate it. If you didn't get the game from GOG make sure you patch it.
Then use the Freespace open installer: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html
Get everything except the mediavps because the installer has been issuing corrupt ones. Download those from this thread: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html
I recommend you read the instructions and not just download the files.
You also need to download and install this: http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip
If you don't the Launcher will have issues.
In addition grab the newest executable for Windows(currently 3.6.10 RC2): http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,62210.0.html
You can toss the other executable files that the installer downloads you won't need them. All you need is the RC2 executable files.
I hope I helped a bit and didn't just add to your confusion.
-
Thank you everyone, after reinstalling everything has worked just fine and I'm in the process of getting mediavps.
-
As for you people telling him to redownload it: Bad! Badbadbad! He just redownloaded like 4 GB of stuff. We probably could've gotten his install working.
-
Agreed.
Asteroth: since you now have a working installation, you might want to concider backing it up somewhere, like a USB stick, an external HDD, a DVD etc. That way, if you experience immense difficulties later, you can save precious bandwidth and do a "FreeSpace Restore":
- copy your \freespace2\data\players\ directory somewhere
- destroy your entire \freespace2\ directory
- copy your backed up FreeSpace to your \freespace2\ directory
- move the copied \data\players directory to your \freespace2\ directory.
That way you can easily restore your installation back to its original state in terms of mods and such while also keeping your pilot files and stats.
-
To be clear, he means to do that if it gets screwed up, not now. Back it up now.
-

You do have a point. However it has been my experience that in some cases a reinstall is a much simpler solution than jumping through troubleshooting hoops. I do recognize though that it is not practical in some situations. This one I think definitely warranted it.
-
Not really, the only thing that can go wrong with an FS install is misplaced files (there are more severe things, but it's really hard to really screw over an install)
In this case, all we had to do was get that debug log, and make sure that his launcher options were correct. Come to think of it, an old launcher was probably the problem.
Never suggest a new install until you know what the old one looks like, bandwidth costs money.
-
It's alright, everything works fine, and my god mediavps looks AMAZING. 100% Worth it.
Thanks again, everyone, for helping.
-
Yeah, but back it up for the next time.
-
And back up the retail files. Just don't give them away, it's illegal now. :)
