Title: Plot-important promotions
Post by: Krelus on May 03, 2009, 07:38:45 pm
I ran into a slight foresight snag. As my planned campaign continues, you get more named NPCs in your wing. The problem is, I explicitly state their ranks and you out as a lowly volunteer ensign. Since it'd be weird for an Ensign to order around an experienced Captain, this creates a necessity for some promotions along the line. Unfortunately, promotions aren't manually granted.

So far, the avenue I'm considering is to just make all the rank score requirements stupidly, crazy high so there's no way you could possibly get a promotion and simply write the "promotions" into the debriefings.

Can't you just...'force' the whole thing by setting rank score requirements at various high numbers, then make completing the missions give you that many points? (Of course, you have to make sure the numbers are so far apart that killing stuff won't help you on your way).

Is there something wrong with grant-promotion?

Do people even care nowadays, seeing as every new mod makes you create a new pilot file? I stopped caring about medals about a month after getting FSO.

Snail: Dangit, I really need to start looking at SEXP lists before asking questions.

Titan: Fair enough, but I'm a detail whore >.>

What happens when the player gets promoted higher though points though?
Does it just up the player's rank once? (You can tell I haven't read the documentation).

Ask the codies.

I'm fairly sure it just bumps you up one (if I recall correctly there's no modifier field).

Although I vaguely, vaguely, vaguely, recall a way that you could demote a player somehow but I don't think it was in this sexp.

If my information about it bumping you up one is wrong, a simple check in FRED should let you know (I don't have FSO on this computer).

I had this idea as well, for this to work you need

- To disallow promotions in every mission of the campaign
- Stack that sexp high if you want to have some kind of hero character

Main Issue to it's use I have

- Once someone works out that's what's happening, people could use it as a promotion whoring thing and keep replaying the campaign to get to admiral. Not that anyone cares, but for people who do it's bound to be labelled "Cheating" or some-such.

Considering it only affects that one mod, I'm not particularly bothered.
