Title: Debris with power
Post by: Kolgena on May 08, 2009, 01:16:59 am
I just noticed that debris from ships have glow maps. Considering things like Maras probably generate their red glow from some power source, wouldn't that glow disappear when they get derbified?

How do I turn off the glow maps for all ships after they die? Or rather, could it be timed as well, so that the glow map flickers or dims right after the explosion before going out completely? This effect would look nice on all shivan craft, and would probably benefit terran and vasudan capital ships that have windows.

Just guessing here, but I imagine the easiest way is to just give the debris different textures in the model file. That wouldn't let you do the flicker/dim thing though.

The issue is that the debris often uses the same textures as the model, so glowmaps are included.  You can see this problem disappear on ships like the Aten where the debris is using a separate texture (not really practical for tile-mapped ships).  As for your ideas, they would be cool, but would require some coding to implement.

IMO it's more effort than it's worth, but if you can get this to work I'm not stopping you at all :)

High Max: You might want to take a look at this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61209.0.html), and try to use the shader package linked to there. See if that fixes the problem.
Also, necro much?

A two-month bump is not a necro.
