I'm not sure if there are a lot of people who will be interested in this, but I thought it was significant. :)
Nintendo have announced that Pokemon Gold and Silver are getting a remake (http://pokebeach.com/2009/05/gold-and-silver-remakes-confirmed-heart-gold-and-soul-silver) for the DS.
-
It must be totally awesome to essentially have a license to print money.
*Note to self: develop an enduring smash-hit multimedia franchise*
-
HeartGold and SoulSilver? Strange names, but it could be worse.
-
Totally agreed . . . although I have to admit that Pokemon is aimed at children about 11yrs old at the absolute maximum so from that perspective it could be considered as fine.
-
True. Perhaps older people like myself will look at the name and go, "Eugh.", but then again, I've watched and played quite a bit of strange stuff when I was much younger.
-
Cool. Always wanted to play those. Maybe if my sister gets it, she'll let me have a whack.
-
Heart of Gold? :nervous: ;)

Seconded for great justice.

I'd forgotten about that.

Just finished reading it. Great series.
-
No one predicted this!
Lies. The Pokemon community has seen this coming ever since FireRed and LeafGreen came out. It was inevitable.
Hmm... it would be a huge nostalgia trip to replay Gold/Silver. Especially with how well FireRed/LeafGreen redid their generation, this is something to look forward to.

That was funny.

The DS does seem like a good money-printer for Nintendo, though. If somebody doesn't have it, they'll want to have it ... like my sister.
-
Bumping this because I just finished Pokemon Platinum, beat the champ and got the National Dex, and I'm starting to import my LeafGreen and Emerald critters.
Anyone else here have Diamond/Pearl/Platinum and want to trade friend codes?

I have platinum Galemp.
Got it purely for nostalgia haven't played since FRLG, then discovered how fun competitive battling is.
Haven't played for a while but I was working on IV breeding so I could get a "sandstorm" party to level 100. I don't cheat so I don't have any level 100 but I would like to have a match when I have time. :)

Sweet! Same sort of thing here--I played the first generation (Red) on GameBoy Pocket, and actually competed my Pokedex. I never got a GBA, so when I got my DS I got LeafGreen, Emerald and Platinum and I've been in heaven.
My friend code is 2622-0539-8916. All my Pokemon are in their 50s right now, except for a few lvl 70-80 Legendaries. Are you available now?
-
No unfortunately I'm not, long day. :sigh:
Mondays and Thursdays I will be at work from 8-5 then I have class From 6-10. But Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Fridays I'll be available from 6:00 pm CST - till whenever.
So I guess either PM me a time or I'll PM you on Tuesday and see if your busy. :)
BTW, I have quite a few around lvl 60 to 70. I don't have any legendaries I fiddle mostly in the underused and overused tiers. But don't mind going against legendaries at all. :D Another advantage you will have if you IV/EV train is that most of my IV bred/EV trained are around lvl 30. :p
-
I haven't gotten into the professional training/breeding scene yet, but now that I'm champ in three generations I'll give it a shot. :)

Wow. Quite an achievement. I've only been champion in two generations.

Just finished a Wi-Fi match with jdjtCagle, lots of trading and trade-based-evolution. Two battles, first at Level 100 went to him, second at Level 50 went to me. Both excellent, close matches.
Cagle's lineup: Tyrantar, Golduck, Torterra, Gardevoir, Magmortar, Linoone (shiny!)
My lineup: Staraptor, Torterra, Blastoise, Rapidash, Luxray, Snorlax.
Anyone else up for some action?
-
Yes definitely lots of fun I have the video of the first match saved. Wish there was a way to upload it... (to youtube or something) I guess I can put it up on GTS
He whooped me on the second round though and probably the only reason I won the first was because of luck. Criticals, he either missed or I would somehow survive with 1-13 hp :p
-
I really did enjoy fainting you with your own sandstorm. :D
Mobius sent me a PM, apparently he's been a collector since Gen 1. I've CC'd you on it.
-
While I'm a huge fan of the Pokemon games, I've never been into the competitive battling. Too much work.
I just don't think any of my teams would be able to compete with actual human players, is all.
*looks up teams*
Emerald: Blaziken, Gyarados (might replace with a Milotic, if I ever manage to catch a Feebas :mad2:), Aggron, Gardevoir, and Castform. Sixth slot went to an HM slave, either Swellow or Wailord.
I'm well-aware that Castform is an odd choice; he was kind of an experiment. He's surprisingly powerful and well-rounded if used correctly.
My current Platinum team, none are fully evolved yet: Grotle (Torterra), Prinplup (Empoleon), Kirlia (Gallade), Houndour (Houndoom), Gabite (Garchomp), and Rotom (Freezer form).
Tough to train consistently though, since I have to keep switching one out for an HM slave. Very annoying.
I also have a partially-leveled up Jirachi on Ruby. Unsure of what to do with him... he'd be fun to use on a team.

Yeah well wait until I get my actual sandstorm team up and running. It will be epic just to avoid death from my own sandstorm! :p

Alright more players.

Hey man if you need help deciding moves or roles check out http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/
Jirachi makes a great lead IIRC and they also go into detail about great counters for Jirachi so you can know you enemy. ;)

Yeah, I wasn't too sure about mine either--I wouldn't want to go head-to-head with a pro, after all--but despite my not being picky about breeding or natures, I managed to do pretty well vs Cagle. Give it a shot. :)
I use a Blaziken and Agron, too, but I love my Sableye and wouldn't trade him for anyone else. Swalot, Breloom and Linoone round out the team. He's got Surf and Blizzard which makes him effective against Fire, Flying, Grass, Ground, Rock, and Dragon types while only being vulnerable to Fighting-type attacks. If I had more TMs, I would experiment more with Normal-types. Maybe when I earn my Regigigas.

Jirachi? Sweet! I don't have any event pkmn. Where'd you find him?
-
Pokemon Colosseum Pre-Order bonus.
The bonus disc had the option to download a Jirachi into a Ruby/Sapphire cartridge (I don't know if it works with Emerald). Since I was just starting Ruby, I thought, "This'll be cool." and played partway through the game... I don't think I ever finished that game though.
It's the only event Pokemon I have. I did have a Celebi on the Gen II games, which I got in a trade from a friend, who claimed it was legit, but who knows. I don't count it, since I can't transfer it to later generations and that cartridge battery has probably died and erased my game by now.

It seems that VGCats isn't dead (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=285), yet. And, I must say, that comic almost makes it worth tolerating the awful fandom that surrounds that... universe. Almost.

-
Eh, it still hasn't been updated yet this week. :doubt:
-
I'll probably be up for some competitive battling at some point. I'm a bit gutted at how nintendo wifi works, though - I wish it was a global lobby and you could just battle/trade anyone online.
Probably going to get beaten hard, though. I still stick to my Gen 1 tactics of a really beefy Vaporeon and a spec sweeper (For which I use Gardevoir, despite being told that's a bad idea).
The rest are just counters.
-
Gardevoir really got help in generation IV it's an excellent wish support especially with trace. You could switch into many overused pokemon that use electric motor, water absorb, or even intimidate. :)
That's something that Alakazam can't claim.
-
Bah. Finally made my way through the Battle Frontier only to find that it doesn't update your Pokedex. Now how the heck am I supposed to get the rest of my starters? I have Squirtles and Torchicks to trade, but I can't request anything I haven't registered in my Dex.
-
Well you know I don't have anything you don't.... actually scratch that. I forgot I have mudkips if you want one :)
-
i liek mudkipz

:D

I'll definitely be picking this up when it's out. Ruby/Sapphire left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't tried Diamond/Pearl yet. But Gold/Silver were amazing.
-
Perhaps I'm a little old fashioned but when the protagonist forces some enslaved critter, servant what have you to fight for him, it doesn't seem particullarly heroic or decent. More to the point I might be missing something but I don't see much difference between concept of this and dogfighting, cockfighting or whatever blood sport involving forced opponents.
I suppose this isn't the best place to write scathing critiques of a subject matter but I was generally curious if someone could explain the draw of this franchise and its derivates. From an outsider's perspective it doesn't appear to be rife with redeeming qualities.

Honestly it's the strategy for me. I love the strategy. The story? come on... Call me old fashioned :-D but I like mario for the gameplay not the story. ;)
It is a very cruel concept at heart but has a naive and rather mystical approach to the whole experience. Kind of like a utopia heroic mindset of the man and nature take on the evil's of the world together and at the same time for the glory on oneself and pride.
^has no idea if that is remotely true but.... ....I really don't pay that much attention it's purely the fun of it for me.

The explanation that the franchise offers is that Pokemon in fact enjoy the combat, as a sport, and that battling alongside their trainers strengthens a bond of friendship. Notably, any character in the story that abuses his Pokemon, and treats them as tools rather than partners, is shown to be inferior, incompetent, and generally a jerk. Catching them in the wild is said to be that Pokemon's testing of the trainer... remember, they challenge you, not the other way around (save some of the Legendaries).
Yes, I know that it's a shaky and silly justification, but nonetheless, that is the official word.

Like jdjtcagle said: it's the strategy that's the major draw. Whatever else you can say about Pokemon, it has a reasonably simple but very involved battle system, easy to learn but hard to master. Setting up a team that can truly take on anything is a hell of a challenge, so diverse are your competitors. But so diverse are your options, that there are endless combinations to try. I for one have owned every single Pokemon game they've come out with (except the spinoffs like Mystery Dungeon and Ranger), and my team has never, not once, been the same. Radically different, in fact.
More than anything else though: it's a fun experience. Can get tedious at times, particularly level grinding, but overall I always feel a great satisfaction whenever I become Champion. It's hard, but it's fun. Two things that, together, make a game good, IMHO.
-
The Japanese have this thing about collecting things and then battling them (see Digimon, Bakugan, et al.) The game was originally inspired by insect collections. I don't care much for the in-universe explanations, I just think it's fun.
Remember that it's an RPG. You fight things to get stuff and grow stronger, to get better stuff and fight bigger stuff. The fun part of it is the whole rock-paper-scissors strategy that's been hugely expanded; for example, Water beats Fire, Fire beats Grass, and Grass beats Water, but there's 14 other types too.
Pokemon can have one or two types (so Bulbasaur is Grass/Poison.) Attacks that have the same type as the Pokemon are stronger, but they can learn all types of attacks, and they only can know four moves at a time. So, if your opponent sends out a Fire-type, you might send out a Water-type to counter, only for him to use an Electric-type attack and hit you first.
Add in your standard status effects like Sleep and Poisoning, infinite randomly generated encounters, a multilayered Pokemon and move set management system, and an entire metagame based on breeding, and you have an incredibly deep and strategic game for both single-player advancement and multi-player competition.
-
That's the thing I don't get with Pokemon Gyms where they specialize in only one type relying on higher levels and hi-critical hit moves to defeat you. This is the case with Gen1 and Gen2, but I hear that in later generations Gyms have become harder to beat.
The amusing part is your rival takes the pokemon good against yours, but if you take a Water-type it can learn all but the most specialized ice moves later on.

Yeah, except I don't use mine as a wisher. Psychic/thunderbolt/calm mind/hypnosis iirc.
-
Ah well I'm sure it could still hold it's ground on many occasions. There are better choices but that is why certain tiers exist. You would probably love to play in an underused or neverused tier :)
http://www.smogon.com/dp/tiers/
-
I know the tier system, and yes, my teams generally fit inside NN tier.
I don't understand the appeal of the Ubers and the like.
-
I have more fun on UU myself ;-)
