That's when you quit and become a satanist. :p
-
Huh. American school customs are weird.
-
Well I don`t think it`s right to dictate what you can and can`t do while not in school, on your own time.
Thats just wrong.
-
I think I'd have a few choice words to describe the principal if I were the childs' father.
-
ACLU will get involved if these guys prevent the kid from graduating. So many ways in which this is unconstitutional in the US. The one thing that got to me though was this line:
"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.
I mean, the arrogance of these people, thinking that they know, without question, the will of their god better than anyone else in the world. Didn't jesus talk about humility and such? Wankers.
-
The thing is, it isn't unconstitutional: this is a private school. They can set whatever goofy rules they want.
-
So the school would rather cripple a person's chance to become a productive member of society for the sake of 'Christian Values'. Says a lot for Christian Values if that is what they amount to...
-
I absolutely hate people like that (the school in general), Fundamentalist Christians to that extreme shouldn't be existing in the 21st Century, it's just that simple. If the asshole was living in Australia we'd have taken care of him already :P He deserves to have his face kicked in for even trying to impose that kind of thing on a teen these days, if he can't move on from 0 AD, then that's HIS problem, not Frost's. School rules or not, there must be something standing in the way of the school trying to infringe on out of hours activities. Arrghhh!
-
Clarification: he'd graduate, he just wouldn't be allowed to participate in the ceremony.
PRivate schools have this kind of power. They can ban you from having a myspace whether you access it from school or not and such.
But he's not legally bound to the contract thinger they've made him sign, as he's a minor. :P
-
Huh. American school customs are weird.
Trust me, this isn't in any way representative of any level of American schooling. This is just...puritanical. I've heard of a few wacky private schools with strict regulations, but never anything remotely near this level.
-
God gives you the right to make your own decisions... Why are they not following this..
Ahh, must be anti-religion.. :wtf:
-
Christian values must be really weak if all it takes to destroy them is a little dancing and rock music.
-
Please don't apply these beliefs to the entire population of Christians. It feel sort of demeaning.
-
I'm mostly just wondering why they're so insecure. The best way to get people to do something is to tell them not to do it (adam, eve, apple, premarital sex etc). They should really know better.
-
In this case, I think it's a matter of control more than any real Christian beliefs.
-
Scotty, they're Christian beliefs. Just because you only take the watered-down version doesn't mean you get to escape ridicule for the silly things you believe.
-
Yes. He does.
This forum does not exist for you to ridicule people because you don't agree with them, if you want to talk about the difference of opinion between your views and his then fine, but if you plan to ridicule him for believing it then you are attacking the person, not the opinion.
Edit: In other words, if you want to criticise Christianity, go ahead, if you want to criticize Scotty, then don't.
-
Huh. American school customs are weird.
One Baptist private school is not every school in America.

zomg no myspace during computer lab class THE HORROR.

It's indirect ridicule, innit?
Christianity opens the door for people to do all sorts of stupid things, because Christianity is a set of beliefs which encourage a lot of stupid things to be done.
Kill witches, outlaw dancing, whatever. It's all so, so stupid.
Criticism of Christianity is criticism of Christians.
-
Thing is, if you strike out at Scotty, it leaves Scotty alone to defend himself, whereas if you criticise the subject, it means that everyone can pile in....er.... I mean join the debate :)
-
I think we should respect Scotty and his beliefs. There is as much diversity within the 'Christian' group as there is within the 'American' group, and neither group deserves broad generalizations.
-
Exactly, I can't say I'm a massive fan of religion debates, but if they are going to happen, then it should be open to all levels, it isn't about attacking Christians, it's about debating tenets within Christianity itself and how they are interpreted.
-
I will not respect his beliefs. His beliefs are ridiculous.
Just like the beliefs of Scientologists, Mormons, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, etc. Any fluffy message behind the beliefs is irrelevant. The beliefs themselves are stupid and serve only to muddle anything good that the religion may have originally been based on.

Yes. Because the message of the Bible is to outlaw dancing.

Would I get in trouble for just telling zack to f*ck off?
EDIT: :nervous:
-
Almost reminds me of the Taliban.

EDIT: :nervous:
At this point he is pretty much asking for it. For the record I attended a private Lutheran school for 4th through 8th grade. It was nothing like the school the article is describing. Yes some private schools have crazy rules but not all of them do. Many of them give students a quality education. Also before you call every single religion in the world stupid how much do you know about these religions. If you know nothing then you are ignorant and should learn something before spewing an uninformed opinion. I will admit you are entitled to hold such a baseless opinion but that does not make it right. Also no where in the Bible is dancing outlawed.

Why are you even here talking about it then?

Yes. Because the message of the Bible is to outlaw dancing.
What is the message, then? Once you get past all the, uh, "metaphor" all you have is a bunch of wimpy lessons about being nice.
I say cut out the middle man. Would do everybody quite a lot of good.

You obviously missed the last two posts that came before you most recent ignorant comments. I have one response : :beamz:

What do you care what the message is? Do you believe? No? Then who cares?
Does their belief in the magical sky god and his pop up book ruin your beliefs or lack of?
-
It is a bit of a conundrum. On one hand you are so close to completing school and this act of dissension does threaten your ability to graduate or at least your standing. On the other hand it is highly rankling to have a bunch of arrogant zealots reaching there weasely fingers into your private life.
I suppose it comes done to making a clear reasoned decision on whether the consequences are acceptable for flipping off the ignorant prigs in the name of freedom.

Actually you should care, if your precieve something is a threat, and that threat has an ability to affect your life then yes you would be foolish not to try to understand it or care about it. Given the effect religion has had and still today to shape the course of history, if you do take issue with it then it obviously something worth concern.

Whether that kid can graduate or not because his parents think he'll catch "the sex" at a public school is zero threat to me.
They aren't forcing their religion on me and I wouldn't have to make any of my hypothetical kids do it either.
If they want to pray to a giant Chia Pet and go to a warehouse, dress as Cheech and Chong while they whack each other with pool cues singing the theme to Green Acres in ancient Greek, I don't care.

Fixed for great justice.

Except that the (vast) majority of people who call themselves "Christians" today don't believe anything remotely near such things...and those that do are subject to ridicule as much by other people who call themselves "Christians" as by anyone else. What you're doing is no different than saying something along the lines of, "Muslim = raghead terrorist."
But honestly, I don't expect that to have any impact on you. Funny how "tolerance" is such a one-way street to some people, eh?
-
I have to agree with Mongoose here. I think you often have good points, iamzack, but this is a bit too much.

this is going nowhere constructive, thread nuked
