Title: Model Update - Been Busy
Post by: Vengence on May 09, 2009, 08:13:49 pm
I've been so busy with RL that I had to stop working on this but I optimized the UV maps so I have the most detail for the space I have. The UV space has been optimized to the highest degree I could possibly muster. I have baked the Ambient Occlusion map to it as well as applied the rudimentary color and detail maps.

So does this mean the modeling on it is effectively finished?

Wooow! It's fantastic. Do you plan making EA-styled fleet?

He has his own theme for a fleet that was to be used on a mod which was never released.
One, I can't stop looking at the badassness of this ship and two, I want to bloody fly it. :D

In short 99.999995%. I still have to add the pilot and the glass for the cockpit.

Texturing is a terrible part of the process... so time consuming. Well work is work.

So how many primary fire-points does it have?

Six.

though it is all about player preference, the default fitting will be 4 medium-long range weapons on Primary 1 and 2 very short range weapons. the wing guns are suppression sort of weapons as you close in with superior speed and agility while the 2 short range guns will tear the enemy apart. There are... I think, 3 missile slots. The pods are supposed to be able to carry heavy ordinance such as heavy missiles and torpedoes while the wings hold smaller ordinance. Of course this is if it is possible and under player preference.

EDIT- More work on skin. Starting with pods.

I love this ship. Do you plan to release full pack of those ships like Stratcomm, or Steve-O?

I hope so X_X.

I ran into a problem... how do I do that export stuff again? Since I have 3ds max 9 I can't export directly to POF anymore. And I mean like... step by step instructions cause I'm not even sure how this new stuff work.

From 3D Max to Blender to Pof? Others might know better as I'm no modeler yet.

There are two options.

1. Export from 3dsmax with Collada, import in PCS2 with Collada support, might work or not.
The last time i checked the PCS2 version with it it didn't work for me.
Search the forums for more info...

2. Get Truespace 3.2 ( hard to find since the 7 is free now ) or 7.
    Get lithunwrap.
Load the model ( in 3ds format ) in lithunwrap, save as *.cob. <---- only if TS complains about uv map
Load the model in Truespace, make the final adjustments ( if needed ) and save again as *.cob ( if you use
TS 7 save it as TS 6 .cob <--- important!!).
Load it in standard PCS2 edit it and save as *.pof.

Can't TS7 import .3ds files anyway?

Most likely, but TS7 keeps crashing on start-up for me, so i'm not sure, but every 3D app i tried so far could import 3DS format.

The fact that i ( in most cases ) use Lithunwrap is because TS3 has sometimes trouble with the uv.
That's why i load the model in lith, assign the texture to it and save it as *.cob.

It's a bit time consuming, but it works.

I also try collada and I only achive that I have geometry without UV coordinates.. but there is also one more way:

-save Your model as .obj (I suggest You to choose option "triangles" in exporter view)
-open Your model in "deep exploration 5" You may download trial version so it isn't problem
-add light and make group named "detail0"
-save your model in .cob format but don't forget choose "binary" save method..

Enjoy!

To me DeepExploration is a severely terrible option. Why? Key word... Trial. I expect  to be working longer than a mere 30 days on other projects. I'd rather circumvent Truespace altogether. Due to that UV issue you mentioned. Well if all else fails I could try installing my legit 3DS Max 7 but... well... as we all know the exporter isn't 100% reliable. I could try Collada then.

EDIT:

Some outline quick sketches I did for what I want to do to the Typhoon Cruiser and the brand new completely redesigned Hurricane Heavy Cruiser.

So big they couldn't fit on the paper.

Hurricane top, Typhoon Bottom. Hurricane is 6km long and Typhoon is 3. Hurricane now has beam turrets as opposed to solely plasma weaponry. Here is the OLD hurricane pic.

These ships DO have the engine pods. I didn't want them to obscure the bodies in the drawings. Special update on the Hurricane includes 8, not 4 engine pods. The thing is a gargantuan behemoth and needs more than 4 :P.

The Hurricane was once solely a cap ship killer. It is now more multirole, having a large hangar and significant point defense mounts. It's main cap ship weapons are two twin barreled ion cannons, can kill anything smaller than a destroyer in a single salvo, forward slasher beams on the nose, and a good deal of heavy plasma cannons. I can't wait to make it.

The redesign is mostly to make the faction look more aggressive. These aren't your normal human faction. In many games humans are described as being very diplomatic or technologically innovative. This faction is a sort of antithesis of that, relatively retro but still highly advanced inside technology and a very aggressive stance towards others. Not really warlike but as the saying goes:

"We didn't start this war but we will end it."
This is the Homeworlder version:
"We didn't start this war but we will end it in the most brutal manner imaginable."

And I gotta deliver this style in visual means X_X. So yeah... I got my work cut out for myself.

Well, that's why i use lithunwrap, and it only takes a minute to load the model, assign the texture/ uv and save it as *.cob.
Never had any problems with models that way.

The models are really cool, me likes. :)

I was having a severe problem skinning the model recently. Something just seemed very very wrong, and it seems I didn't do the bump map first. Well I am working on it now. If you don't know what that means or implies, having the bumpmap down prevents me from trying to make the diffuse map look bumpy itself.

Still I am having problems texturing the diffuse map. Any help on making it look awesome is welcome.

Looks nice, although some of the details you've put in the exposed parts of the engine look kind of noisy. That is, the detail is so small compared to the texels that it might be lost easily.
