Hi! First post here. I recently installed FreeSpace 2 on my computer. It's a Gateway FX laptop that I purchased in February, new, with 4 GB of RAM, a dual core 2.6 Ghz processor, and Windows Vista Home Premium. Here's my problem: Even though the Setup detects my memory properly, when I try to run the game, it says I have -6 MB of memory and it cannot run. I wrote Interplay about this, and they said that I should install FreeSpace Open. I did so, and I'm still having the same problem. Do you guys have any ideas? Has anyone come across this problem before?
-
Too much memory, retail can't see more than 2GB without problems in most cases. Try 3.6.10, get the .EXE and the launcher from my signature, plop them into your FS directory and run using the launcher.
-
Well, getting RC2 is also an important part because without FSO The Memory (issue) Remains. Gotta read more carefully.
Which FreeSpace Open have you installed? There are many many builds and several Launchers. The best options at the moment are FSO 3.6.10 RC2 and Launcher 5.5d, both of which are linked in my signature.
Also, you may want to see this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html).

Sounds like he doesn't have it installed.
-
Make sure you're actually running the 3.6.10 RC2 executable, preferably through the Launcher.
Also, Interplay is endorsing Freespace Open in an unofficial capacity? Sweet!

That did it. Thanks! I did actually have it installed. Trust me - even on my computer, the install took FOREVER. But the new executables worked.
P.S. - four of you said the exact same thing. ;)

You should get the MediaVPs to enhance the graphics. You'll be blown away.
Then play Transcend, Derelict, Blue Planet, and Windmills.

By the sounds of how long he took, he used Turey's, so he should have them.
If this is the case Jimmy, select either the fsport-mediavps folder for FS1 with advanced graphics, or mediavps for FS2. Select these under the "MOD" tab on the launcher.

Thanks, I'll try that next time I play.
I just wish the nebula backgrounds didn't trigger my migraines. Dammit.

If he has used Turey's installer, the mediavps are likely to be corrupt, have been for a while. Jimmy you need to download the mediavps seperately. Check Lobo's signature out for the link. (I'd post it but as MY signature says, I'm lazy. :P  )

Doing so now - anything else I should take from his sig?
Incidentally, anyone know where I can find the BSG and B5 mods? I LOVED those shows.
EDIT: Also, should I just unzip the MV files to the medidavps folder?
-
The Babylon Project is here. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,105.0.html) Beyond the Red Line here (http://www.beyondtheredline.net/), but you might want to check out Diaspora (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,175.0.html) as well.
-

First make sure the folder is empty, then unzip the MediaVPs to the \freespace2\mediavps\ folder.

Thanks. A couple questions regarding those: Is Diaspora released yet? I don't see a stickied download post. Will installing the Babylon Project change/prevent me from playing the FS2 campaign normally? ...I had another question, but I can't remember it.
Regarding the MVPs - I'd swear I just put the "FSU-MVP", "Mod", and "Readme" files into the folder from a download, but now I'm not sure where from - it was a link off of this post, I'm sure. You sure I should delete them all, Lobo?

Answer to the first question. No, but we're all hoping for a release soon.
Answer to the second, No. IIRC, it can be run as a standalone or as a mod. (I could be wrong though! It's been as while since I played it!)

Ah. So all these conversions/mods just go into the "Mods" section of the launcher, and don't affect anything unless you turn them on? Sweet.

AS long as you put them in their seperate folders within the FS2 folder. Yes you can select those folders through the launcher using the Mod tab.

The subfolders under \freespace2\ appear in the mod section of the Launcher. As general rules
- never put any non-retail files to \freespace2\ or \freespace2\data\
- have each and every mod in its own subfolder under \freespace2\.
That way mod handling is easy and you won't accidentally your FreeSpace 2.

If you've downloaded the MediaVPs manually, you don't need to delete them (and there actually wouldn't have been a need to redownload them in the first place), but if you got them with Turey's Installer, you should delete them and place the new ones there.

Well, according to Firefox's download manager, I got them from hard-light not that long ago. I don't remember which post I got the links from, unfortunately. I'll still install the music and complete zips over it just to be sure, because I only downloaded 3 files individually. Thanks!
EDIT: Huh. The MV_complete.vp file - I just put that in the MediaVPs folder? It replaces all the individual files (except the music one)?

Yes.

No, not exactly. Babylon Project and BtRL are both total conversions, meaning they will install themselves completely separate from FS2, and they do not require FS2 to run. Installing them as mods for FS2 (i.e. Inside the FS2 folder) will probably lead to new and interesting sideeffects.
-
Alright, cool. Anything else you guys recommend?

Well, I haven't downloaded BP yet because of how long it'll take, and I decided I'd wait for the BtRL final release instead of downloading the demo... but thanks, good to know.

Nitpicking: BP is an abbreviation of Blue Planet (a FreeSpace Open mod), TBP is an abbreviation of The Babylon Project (a Babylon 5 -related total conversion, independent of FS2/FSO).
-
Oops. I'll try to remember that in the future.

Nitpicking your nitpick. FSO is required for TBP. :p

You may be waiting a long time there... Diaspora is set to release soon.

Yeah, well - the demo was going to take about an hour and a half to download anyway. I'd rather not spend that much time just for a demo.
Again - anything else you guys recommend I get?

Further venturing into the dangerous arts of semantics: I was using the abbreviation FSO in the meaning of "a game called FreeSpace Open, having several improvements compared to retail FS2", not as a mere game engine. The game engine is indeed highly needed in TBP.
