Title: Anyone else have strange urges regarding music?
Post by: Thadeus on May 12, 2009, 06:40:04 am
Imagine, if you will, that you are fighting for your life. The enemy is overwhelming, and you are being pushed back.

Suddenly, an allied destroyer appears.

This music plays as it emerges from subspace.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPyUHUMW424 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPyUHUMW424)

Friendly fighters swarm out, and beams strike the hulls of enemy warships - the battle is swiftly won.

I have toyed with evil ideas such as subjecting a player to J-Pop from nowhere in a mission, but for the most part I'm not crazy enough to actually do it.

I've seen something similar done in a Youtube video of a guy playing through a shmup. Had a heavy metal soundtrack all the way through, then he put "Motteke! Sailor Fuku" as the music during the boss battle, with the caption "You weren't expecting that, were you."

I lol'ed hard. :)

I wanted to pull something like that, but ShadowGorrath stopped me.
It was probably a good thing he did, cause it wasn't a joke campaign or anything.

I would use something you can fight to...

Like Basara/Fire Bomber, Macross 7

As I describe in my fanfic.  :drevil:

For the BSG Pegasus prison break scene, I might go "Power Ranger" on them. Heh!

I actually have a side-job in the works, called "Metal Battalion." It's a campaign that will feature among other things tracks by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. The campaign description is currently set to "Blow crap up whilst listening to kickass music."

I must find a way to sneak in the Power Rangers theme.

Spoiler:
The moment the Temeraire and its battlegroup jumps in to assist the Orestes attacking the Sathanas is awesome simply because Aim starts playing at the very moment they all jump in.

How about some Rawhide (or Moskau) while doing a barrel roll?

Honestly Metal would just kill the feel of space combat for me. :doubt:
Anything with vocals is just horrible space battle music if you're involved with it. Watching one isn't all that bad, especially when they use a choir like Immediate Music tracks do.

Aim is an excellent track for space battles, Lethal Laser and No Retreat from Darkstar One are also good.

I can say though Dilmah G has a good selection himself.

It mostly depends on what kind of metal, though. For example, I was thinking of using Metallica, but after some testing I determined that just wouldn't work. You need something really grandiose. I've gotten good results with Dream Theater. As for the vocals, to me it isn't a problem as long as the campaign doesn't have voiceovers. I can't listen to two voices at once, that's just confusing.
It mostly boils down to personal preference, I suppose.

Darius' Joshua Menu is VERY fitting menu music.

Bang Camaro, FTW. :pimp:

I listen to them while I play Halo 3, and it works quite well. :D
Not the heaviest rock like Judas Priest, but I like it plenty.

I agree with your notion of vocals making bad battle music, but Bang Camaro uses a 20-man choir that I think blends in quite well to the background.
Some kickass guitar solos too, IMHO. :pimp:

I don't know which one of the following is more fearsome. An Orion jumping in:

1. while playing the Top Gear theme "Jessica";
2. while playing "Never Gonna Give You Up";
3. while playing "Together Forever";
3. painted in Pedobear livery; or
4. painted like a Lucifer and making the same engine sounds as a Sathanas.

I'd play Freespace 2 to pretty much any music, I'd play it to Beethoven's greatest hits (er... maybe not) or Rage against the machine. Of course there are exceptions, if it was to ABBA I'd self destruct instantly (not my fighter; me).

Nightwish songs are great ,every time I hear the beggining of Ghost Love Score I think about a huge battle.
(unfortunately in my mod I use a slow moving ,fast firing anti-cap cannons that make BOEs nearly impossible because of max wepons limit)
Instrumental version of Dark Chest Of Wonders would be also good battle theme.
I have instrumental version of Amaranth. (and the rest of their discography ,including some bonuses)
As for change of vocalist I like Dark Passoin Play ,it's a bit different than previous albums ,but I like it.
My favourites from this album are The Escapist and The Poet And The Pendulum.

I found four tracks without wocals ,on Polish "Wrzuta" website ,there are:
Master Passion Greed ,Bye Bye Beautyful and Cadence Of Her Last Breach.
And of course Amaranth.
*snip*
I'm currently unable to check them ,but they are descrited as without wocals (bez wokalu).
Disregard the last one on the page ,it's a Ghost Love Score ,which looks like a normal version.
You can download files from Wrzuta here: *snap*
Just copy/paste the link from the adress bar into text box ,click red button with "Pobierz" (download) on it and then just click the dark red word "pobierz" under the song title (you can also use "save target element as" ,opera sometimes wanted to play the file instead of dowloading it).
I apologize for linking you to Polish sites ,but that's everything I can do.
I don't know any english equivalent of this site. (maybe YouTube ,but I found Wrzuta far more handy when it comes to downloading the files).

No links to copyrighted stuff, plzkthxbai.

OK ,sorry ,I normally try to avoid this ,but I didn't even know that there was instrumental versions of those songs.
Maybe those was just edited in some program ,I know it's possible to remove voice from recording (though it impacts quality).

Don't you think that having a song about love in background while bombing a capship is a bit weird?  :)
The problem is that sometimes text doesn't correspond to action ,10th Men Down is about war ,but that's all.
In my opinion songs can be used for example in movies ,where you have complete control of what's happening and you can time everything. In mission there's always some randomness.
Those battle scenes I think about while listening ,for example ,Ghost Love Score are movie-like (though involving my ships).

10th Man Down goes with any sort of combat in my opinion...Ive seen it put to Sailor Moon for christ's sake!

And that was pretty crappy, but at least Sailor Moon had just barely enough of the right "violence is bad" ethos for it to make sense.

It doesn't really fit the FS ethos, for that very reason. If we had stopped at the Terran-Vasudan War, it would have, but the Shivans are wearing the black hats and are a threat that can only be met with and dealt with violently. The NTF has a similar problem.

You can always choreograph it (I've personally always thought the opening to Stargate Atlantis would be excellent for a campaign opening or trailer if I ever learned to work cutscenes). But unchoreographed combat requires a different sort of music.

Well, except for that one time Bosch did that thing that might or might not have been semi-peaceful contact (if your name was Bosch, Gibson, Sarno, or about a dozen others, and not 'Iceni mook.')

I'm working on ways of chopping up music so that it has a relatively uniform intensity and works well with FS2's music system. I've had good results so far with Dream Theater's "Panic Attack" and Judas Priest's "Hell Patrol."
