okay, so i saw the preview for terminator salvation in theaters and it looked pretty good to me. similar to BSG but it's terminator so it's ok
-
Pro: Christian Bale
Contra: McG.
Let's see which one cancels the other out.
-
i don't get it, really, i though it all got nuked, not aany sort of convential battles
but then again, any sort of sense ended with the 2nd one

After the nukage was the Future War - remember the opening sequences to the other movies?
-
Yep. After the nuclear war, the survivors consolidated in a resistance movement, led by John Connor. This has been a part of terminator lore since the first movie, they haven't really broken any continuity regarding that.
-
In the future there was a nuclear war...
And because of all the radiation, cats developed the ability to shoot lasers out of their mouths...
-
Shouldn't this be in GD? I'll leave it to the local mods on this forum, but I think this thread should be moved.
That being said, yes it does look awesome.
-
I'm reasonably certain the movie's gonna suck big hairy balls.
Design-wise, it looks nifty as ****. But McG basically guarantees that everything will be awesome for everyone with an IQ of about 60.
-

-
It's gonna suck because it's a given that anything coming out of Hollywood right now is going to be mindless ****ing trash.
I'm sure they'll make some vague attempt to pay homage to the first two movies, and tie in just enough to the third movie to keep the studio happy. Just as I'm sure they'll completely ignore all the concepts of the expression of free will through pre-determinism which made the first two movies so awesome, and whose absence caused the third movie to suck so ****ing hard.
The gist of the movie is that Connor's not yet the leader of TechCom (which is now just the 'Resistance'), everyone's wary as **** because he knows so much **** about SkyNet, and the T-800s are about to come online for the first time.
Frankly, there are only two ways this movie could not suck.
First, is if they just cram pre-determinism down everyone's throats. Have Connor winning leadership of the Resistance by virtue of making seemingly insane, suicidal acts of astonishing 'courage' because he already knows he lives to see SkyNet's defeat.
Second, is if Marcus (some mook who just shows up) had turned out to have been ****ing around with time travel sometime in like 2080, and then all of a sudden he's back in 2018 in a post-apocalyptic wasteland caused by a war that as far as he's concerned should never have happened. Because that'd just be hilarious. However, I already know this not to be the case.
And then there's the small matter of McG directing. This man made Charlie's Angels and was an Executive Producer on The OC.
They're making a film about humanity's fight for survival against evil robots in a nuclear wasteland, and they handed over the artistic reigns to a man whose biggest career accomplishment before Charlie's Angels was directing ****ing Offspring music videos. A man of such legendary insight and unparalleled knowledge of cinema that he studied psychology at university.
Oh and did I mention that mankind's brutal struggle to regain their freedom from oppression, slavery and brutal death at the hands of the tyrannical SkyNet is going to be rated PG-13?!
Which basically means no humans are gonna die on-screen, and you might get to see John Connor kissing his pregnant wife - but he won't be slipping her the tongue.
IT'S. GOING. TO. SUCK. BALLS.
-

To be fair, when T2 slipped the rating down from 18 to 15 you could have made a similar argument. PG-13 probably is way too low for a movie like this one though.
On the whole though while I refuse to get my hopes up over this movie I'm not about to write it off just yet. Occasionally Hollywood can get things right.
-
Charlie's. Angels.
-
Charlie's. Angels.
To be fair the man, the source material is similarly vapid.
-
This is a direct seqiuel to T2, and assumes T3 never happened, so at least that's in its favour.

Recognising that T3 sucked certainly points to at least some sense of taste in those involved.

Win.
I don't care about the movie in the slightest now. It could be two girls one cup played over and over, interspersed with flashes of goatse, and I wouldn't care. On this fact alone, Salvation has been fully vindicated in my eyes.

What the hell are you talking about?
Do you actually know anything about this movie or are you just posting cause you like reading your own text?

I saw a trailor on TV last night. I wasent happy about the movie until then. Now i wana see it.
-
On the bright side, there will be giant robots.
-
Yes. Giant robots are always good. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InstantAwesomeJustAddMecha)
As with others, the fact that T3 has been dropped from the continuity is major points in my eyes. This movie just might be good after all.
-
The whole 'no T3' thing is bull****.
It doesn't carry directly on from T3, but his wife's still Kate (she's a doctor now instead of a vet), Judgment Day still happened "14 years ago" as of 2018 - which about ties in with T3...
And I'm betting there's plenty of other bull****, because - guess what - the studio doesn't give a ****!
All they care about is marketability. So if they can back-reference T3 to keep the people who liked that piece of **** happy and increase the grosses, reviews and overall word-of-mouth then they'll do it.
About the only redeeming thing I can currently find with this movie is that Christian Bale has read the script and signed on to star. And he's generally pretty good at picking movies that actually have some artistic merit. Of course, McG could pretty easily rape that in the face with his 'vision'.
-
They can't approach T3 really, because they got sued and lost like 60 million dollars or something from the woman that actually wrote the basis of the thing.
Btw, did you notice how the Matrix pretty much perfectly overlaps with Terminator? Terminator is more like Matrix: The Lost Years.
Part of her $60 million settlement was the Matrix as well, the first one being ripped off, then the other two were "original" and it showed.
-
I prefer to view the Terminator franchise with a view to the alternate ending of Alien: Resurrection - where they return to Earth and it's a nuclear wasteland.
This would also play into the androids lacking a proper robotic form, the generally rugged-by-low-tech nature of technology in the Aliens universe, and would allow ties to Predator too.
Tada.
-
Alien: Resurrection, now there's a movie that should have known to declare the 3rd one of the series non-canon and just continue on from the 2nd one.
-
I actually like Alien: Resurrection, I just think it suffered from: A) The whole "human birth" thing near the ending, and B) Amateurish directing.
If they'd left out the hybrid and just had the Queen going bat**** crazy thanks to Ripley's memories, and turning on it's young (destroying the ship in the process) - and had a better director, I think it'd've been pretty damn awesome. Certainly better than Alien 3.
-
The director's cut of Alien 3 is actually pretty good. They keep the doctor around for much longer and everything isn't as jumbled together.
-
my experience is that directors cuts tend to be a lot better than the theatrical release. untill they come out with an aliens vs predator vs terminator movie comes out il be a little more open to t4. its gonna suck, i mean its not the 70s anymore, but will it suck in a way thats at least half ass entertaining.
-

I have actually.

Erm, Terminator predates the **** out of the Matrix. Along with R.U.R., Colossus: The Forbin Project and I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream Terminator is one of the building blocks of the AI revolt genre. Its like saying Night of the Living Dead is the country town version of Dawn of the Dead
-
so you haven't noticed how terminator is about a race or red eyed stainless steal robots revolting against there masters and enslaving the human race, and how the matrix is about a future hundreds of years after is a race of red eyed stainless steal robots revolt against there masters and enslaved the human race, you don't see how they could be compatible in a retcon sort of way.
-
.
-
well than again if the new terminator is any good than that means that it can't be related to the matrix. all of the matrix was pretty good in it's own way except for the last 5 minutes of the 3rd movie. Peace with robots? really?
-
Wait, what do you mean, third movie?
There was only one Matrix film.
And only two Terminators.
-
.
-
Well the Matrix might be only 200 years later. After Neo awoke, he talked to Morpheus and said something about 1999 (in the Matrix virtual reality, it is 1999), then Morpheus says it is more like 2199, or was it 2099? But he estimated.
If memory serves it was 2199 I believe. I'm pretty sure I'm right but I would have to re-watch the movie to be sure. AND yes this movie looks awesome

I'm both proud and ashamed that I was able to comprehend what the **** you meant by that, BlackDove.
OT: On further reflection, this movie will be ****e. Nothing more to be said, really.

You're obviously delusional. The relevant mental health professionals have been informed.
-
There was only one Matrix film.
Yep. It's too bad they never made any sequels (http://xkcd.com/566/).
BSG, another story about a race of red-eyed stainless steeled machines revolting against their masters, could also exist within the Terminator-Matrix continuity.

Next thing you'll be telling us there were more than three Indiana Jones movies.
-
Or more than three Star Wars for that matter.
-
At best it'll be as good as the first one, not as good as the second one.
At worst it'll be an enjoyable, semi-forgettable popcorn muncher.
Either way I'll get my money's worth.

an that there was a sequel to austin powers
what a nice, complete, one-off movie...

I think you're missing the joke here.
The joke is that the Matrix sequels were so terrible that everyone would rather pretend they never existed.
Thus that comic Darius linked to.

Blackdove, that is a stroke of genius.

Why thank you, I know I am.

-
I hate to say it, but Pokemon is still going strong.
Reviews of the new Terminator are not looking good. Apparently it sucks.
-
Well I think this new Terminator movie looks good.
I wonder if BlackDove made that skeleton version of that Pokemon. That is kind of funny. Maybe it represents that the Matrix is dead as well as Pokemon.
My only suggestion is to lurk moar.
-
Seen it yet?
Pretty bad. Very disappointed. Not as bad as T3.
And Bale wont be doing another. He said it in some interview.........
