It's Quake 3 for free wth full character statistics: http://www.quakelive.com/

I love this game. Anyone from HLP also playing? Maybe we'll play together? :D

...and what possible legitimate use would that have, that can't be accounted
for with name/address etc... IE the usual methods?

I played quake live a little bit and was pretty impressed with the response time of the game and how smooth it ran. But not sure how popular it is going to be.
