Title: I'm using the FSOpen Installer to download stuff - but get errors
Post by: K515 on May 19, 2009, 06:50:11 pm
Ok, Here's my new thread - I've redownloaded the "bare bones" using the FreeSpaceOpen Installer - but there still is an error in installing these downloads to my C:\Games\FreeSpace 2 folder that the installer reports. Here are some images:

A - Redownloading the bare bones

B - Unchecking the Unoffical Windows stuff

C - The installer still says there is an error in installing the downloads to my FreeSpace folder. It does not give any specfific error messages of any kind.

How do I avoid this error and get everything installed properly? Is there something wrong with the FSOpen Installer itself?

P.S. Before redownloading, I went into my FS2 folder in C:\Games\FreeSpace 2 and I deleted 2 folders with "mediavp" in their names.

Do you have the retail FS2 files?

Have you actually tried to run it?

Nothing would be wrong with the FSOinstaller. Use it frequently to grab campaigns and such. I agree with Titan. DSo you have the retail files for FS2? Also, wouldn't you want the 3.6.10 executables? I thought that 3.6.9 was rather outdated...?

True. Get RC2 from my sig.

This. Are you sure it's actually any kind of important error? See if it works.

Manual installation ftw.

I have FreeSpace 2 from GoG - does this contain the retail files?

Have you actually tried to run it?
No. I wanted to get all the downloads, back them up, and then run it. My FreeSpace 2 from GoG runs fine (just played the intro part, then I exited FS2 when I got to the part where I'm supposed to create my pilot-name) because, like I said, I wanted to get all the downloads & back them up first.

Yep.

Yes, I'd rather get the 3.6.10 executables than the 3.6.9 stuff. But my Turey's installer says "3.6.9" on the Bare Bones and the MediaVPs. The 3.6.10 Bare Bones and MediaVPs arn't listed in the installer menu - could this be what's causing these install errors I'm getting? How do I get the FSOpen Installer to list the 3.6.10 executables?

True. Get RC2 from my sig.
What's this RC2? Is it short for the "3.6.10 Release Candidate"?
Have you actually tried to run it?
This. Are you sure it's actually any kind of important error? See if it works.
You mean, try to run FreeSpace 1 on top of FreeSpace 2?

Manual installation ftw.
How do I do a manual installation? And what does "ftw" mean?

Ok - I'm getting the RC2 right now -

Make sure the Launcher is present in your Freespace 2 directory (Launcher, by RandomTiger.) Launch it up, select 3.6.10 RC2 (Without a -d on the end!), check things out. See any absurd problems?

Manual installation ftw.
How do I do a manual installation? And what does "ftw" mean?

Ok - I'm getting the RC2 right now -
Well, since Turey's Installer actually only downloads the selected components and places them where they belong, a manual installation is a procedure in which you download the stuff yourself and stick them to their correct places. A more in-depth description of this procedure is available behind the Installing FSO (thinking man's version) link in my signature.
The reason why I prefer and recommend manual installation is that that way you'll know what you're getting and where it's going. With Turey's Installer it is more of a "Click Next, close your eyes, plug your ears and hope for the best" sort of thing.

Depending on the context, ftw can be
- an acronym of the words "For The Win"
- a 1994 film about an ex-con who is a rodeo rider.

select 3.6.10 RC2 (Without a -d on the end!)
Actually, RC2 has the word "debug" in the file name of the debug build.

Ok, I've downloaded the RC2 from colecampbell666's sig - here are some images of the contents of my jump drive:

A - with the RC2 downloaded as of 5 minutes ago today, from colecampbell666's sig

B - the contents of an older (approx. 5-6 weeks ago) folder in my jump drive

So, since I downloaded the RC2 from colecampbell666's sig, do I delete the RC2 from my this subfolder?

Well, I ran the launcher - it's already in my C:\Games\FreeSpace 2 folder, but it gave me an error message as shown:

Although I got this error message (shown in the image immediately above), the launcher started up - I exited it immediatly, since I'm planning on going out to the local mall today and won't be back until later today.

It's the same thing.

I'm back - now I'm getting started again with this FreeSpace stuff. For starters, let's check out the contents of my FreeSpace and FreeSpace 2 directories - as they're displayed here:

1) The contents of my FreeSpace directory - is this my old Descent: FreeSpace Directory, or it the one I downloaded at this site?

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd225/KellySt10/contentsofmyfreespacedirectory.jpg);

2) The contents of my FreeSpace 2 directory - roughly the top half of the directory

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd225/KellySt10/contentsofmyfs2directorya.jpg);

3) The contents of my FreeSpace 2 directory - roughly the bottom half of the directory

Nothing would be wrong with the FSOinstaller. Use it frequently to grab campaigns and such. I agree with Titan. DSo you have the retail files for FS2? Also, wouldn't you want the 3.6.10 executables? I thought that 3.6.9 was rather outdated...?
Ok, but how do I use the FSO installer to grab the 3.6.10 executables? - do I already have all of the latest ones? (please check the displays of the contents of my FS and FS2 directories.)
Title: Re: I'm using the FSOpen Installer to download stuff - but get errors

That top directory is your original Freespace directory, not anything you downloaded from here.

The bottom directory looks fine. Install OpenAL, download 3.6.10 RC2, run the launcher, and select 3.6.10 RC2 as your executable. Then we'll take the next few steps.

ok, I ran the launcher, selected RC2 3.6.10 and "apply".

but suppose I'd like to play the missions in FreeSpace1 before playing the missions in my FreeSpace 2 that I got from GoG - how can I play all the FS 1 missions without that cheat code restriction when I use my favorite cheat codes in FS 1 (FSPort)?

That top directory is your original Freespace directory, not anything you downloaded from here.
You mean that directory is my original Descent: FreeSpace directory? If so, can I use the FRED of that directory to eliminate the cheat code restriction when I use my favorite cheat codes during gameplay?

1) The contents of my FreeSpace directory
Irrelevant.

Ok, but how do I use the FSO installer to grab the 3.6.10 executables?
You don't. The Installer is very outdated in terms of builds. You already have 3.6.10 RC2 which currently is the newest and bestest.

ok, I ran the launcher, selected RC2 3.6.10 and "apply".

Don't cheat.
Also, FSPort is a mod for FS2 -> FSPort relies on the FS2/FSO game engine. FS2 game engine does not have the cheat restriction -> cheat all you want in FSPort.

Also, is he actually using 3.6.10 RC2? His 'browse' window just says 3.6.10, presumably the outdated one from the Installer...are we sure he has RC2?

You don't. The Installer is very outdated in terms of builds.
Is this why I was getting these errors when I wss using this installer to download stuff?
Oh, I love this picture, Lobo (thanks!)! That's me all over - I am a spaceship captian at Civil Space Patrol.

this is what I meant - how do I play all the FS 1 missions in FSPort? How do I get the launcher to launch FSPort? Can you play all of the FS 1 missions in FSPort?

anyway, the launcher runs just fine now - that latest launcher error message image just posted (as of 10 minutes ago today) is a mistake; my laptop has malware on it which is causing all kinds of crazy internet problems.

Select the 3.6.10 RC2 .EXE in the top box on the launcher. Run the installer to get FSPort, and then select fsport_mediavps as your mod folder under the mod tab. Select the FS1 campaign in the campaign room. Play FS1.

What cole said. Use the Launcher's MOD tab to select an active mod, run the game and once in the main hall, go to the campaign room and select the correct campaign. The entire FS1 campaign and the necessary ships 'n stuff have been ported to FSPort so that they can be enjoyed with FS2 and FSO.

ok, I did this (see image). Is this mod the latest and is it complete?

Now I ran this mod, but I got an error

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd225/KellySt10/fsportmoderrormessage1.jpg) however, I was able to play the first training mission except that when my instructor told me to press the "\" key to go full speed, pressing the "\" key did nothing at all. So I exited this, went back to the hall and selected "chanpagin" but got this error message:

Why did I get these error messages? Some files missing? If so where do I get them?

Make sure you make a new pilot file, then go to the Campaign Room (not the Ready Room!) in the mainhall and select 'Freespace: The Great War'.

Thanks, General B. I did what you said, and the game (FreeSpace The Great War) runs ok. But when I tried to activate cheat mode (by typing www.volition-inc.com) during the first training mission, it wouldn't get into cheat mode. How do I activate cheat mode, and are the cheat codes the same as they are for the retail, boxed version of Descent: FreeSpace The Great War?

No, since you're now playing Freespace 2.

www.freespace2.com

Type that. Cheat commands are, I believe, the same - tilde and I is invincible, so on.

You really shouldn't need the cheats if you turn it down to, say, Very Easy, though.

You're basically playing FS2, but with the FS1 ships/etc. The FS1 cheats no longer work.
