Title: Jump drives in FS1?

Just to double check, where there jump drives in FS1? If not, what was their mode of transportation?

Remember though, that like FS2, there were two kinds of Jump drive, intra- and inter-system, and only FS1 fuzzied the line in the final mission.

Could they have used a transmitting ship or nav-buoy to send the coordinates (or would it be pointless?) Thanks.

I seem to recall that fighters had jump locations hard-coded into them, it was never really explained how, so any technobabble that works would be fine. Cap-ships could jump systems, but needed to do so from a Node, however, I did notice a certain degree of 'mobility' about those nodes when the storyline required it ;)

It's never specifically stated I don't think, but I would presume that jump coordinates could be sent to your fighter's nav computer if there was any change needed from the ones stored on the nav.

It's never specifically stated I don't think, but I would presume that jump coordinates could be sent to your fighter's nav computer if there was any change needed from the ones stored on the nav.

No, red alert missions have "Transmitting new orders",

but there are some missions ("...But Hate the Traitor" comes to mind) where Command says they're uploading the coordinates to your computer/nav system.

If i remember right "Fighter based" jumpdrives were a big innovation sometime through the FS1 campaign.

Previously and at the beginning of FS1 fighters were reliant on Destroyers or other carrier Ships to get around.

Correct me if i'm wrong please lol ;) Maybe i remember it from a pre-FS1 user made campaign as well, but i remember reading it somewhere :p

There was a mention of new drive systems being equipped on fighters somewhere in the FS1 campaign. They allowed fighter to use the jump nodes to jump between systems. Before then, the fighter did have intrastellar drives but relied on the destroyers for interstellar travel.

They weren't fleet-wide, and even at the time of FS2 were only special issue due to cost.

New Technology: Jump Drives

This mission will be facilitated by the new subspace drive we have received. For years the GTA has tried to give a fighter the ability to do intersystem jumps. After monitoring the Beta Aquilae engagements, the GTA science colony at Sol has finally been able to solve the puzzle. All GTA fighters are currently being equipped with intersystem subspace drives.

Yeah. Intersystem ones are new as of FS1.
Intrasystem ones have been around for a while even at the start.

There is an inconsistency with the timing of the fighter-mounted inter-system jumpdrives.  In one of the missions prior to that, in fact as you're providing escort for escaping refugee ships, in Alpha Centauri, I believe, there are Vasudan fighters clearly seen entering and exiting the system through jumpnodes.  I on the other hand, prefer to send general "form on my wing" commands as they're about to depart.  By the end of the mission, I've got a huge swarm of fighters at my command. :cool:

Yeah, those fighters are a bit of a slip-up in terms of canon; for all we know, that mission could have been created before the idea of requiring the newly-created intersystem drives to destroy the Lucifer was finalized.  I never realized that you could order around every single wing like that, though. :D

Yeah, but Vasudans supposedly have better power systems, so they may not have had much trouble in this regard whereas Terran fighters require a drive engineered down to their level of power output.

The only other way I could see them make inter-system jumps like that, would be the occasionally-speculated parallel jump, where fighters may jump alongside other vessels capable of inter-system travel.  There's no cannon evidence that this is possible, but it would be a bit like fighters in B5 using a cap-ship's jump point to enter hyperspace.
