Title: Two questions, starting out in Freespace 1
Post by: Kiwi on May 23, 2009, 02:11:36 pm
The version I have is all on CDs, two in one CD case, and the expansion in another, in a joined together (hinged, sort of) cardboard box.  The reference card is in RTF, but doesn't seem to be proper RTF, and won't print out.  I'm using the three-sheet keyboard reference from Freespace 2, which is in PDF format, and could be printed.

What I want to make sure of, is that both games used the same default key assignments.

The other thing is to ask what was the second CD used for?  Languages other than English?  The install never asked for it.

Thanks.

First: key assignments didn't change at all.
Second: second CD "houses"  FMV movies and command briefing anis. Latter are copied to HDD with full instalation.

I never saw any option for "Full Installation", and compared to the PCs of 1998, this one I am using has plenty of storage, so I would've chosen that one if it had been offered.  Any way other than uninstalling to get that fixed?

(It's using an Asus P5A MB, an AMD K6-2/450 CPU, 384 MBs of PC-100 RAM, an nVIDIA GTS video card (32 MBs), a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz audio processor, and a 40 GB Seagate Hdd that had to be jumpered to report only 32 GBs to the BIOS.

Thanks again.

I have installed FS1 long time ago and I don't remember everything, but you could try copying CBAnim.vp from CD2 to your FS1 folder for command briefing anis. I don't know if there is a way to use FMVs from HDD.

There's a pretty obvious method to make sure both use the same control layout: Use the FSPort. There will be some graphical changes, but You will be able to simply clone one of your FS2 pilot files, and you'll have the same controls.

Thanks, anyway.  I didn't know there was any such thing as FSPort yesterday; don't even know how the various 'net searches I'd done in the days leading up to installing (also on Friday) never turned up any hits that announced its existence (FSPort's) to me for investigation.  I'll see if I can't run Freespace 1 as is, although being stuck with 640 by 480 is a real drag all by itself!

If you just run FSport through FS2 you can get the resolution as high as you want. 1680x1050? No problem!

The original FS1 had 2 disks.  The third disk may be the Silent Threat Expansion.  Try installing from it.

Isn't that a PC from '98?

That's what it is, one disc's the game, one is movies, and one is ST.

OK, there was no option to install the movies on the Hdd, no such thing as "Full Install".  One screwy thing, however, is that the expansion was at patch level 1.04, while the main program had already been updated to 1.06, resulting in a need to apply the patch "again".

The expansion also seems to have done something along the way to confuse the OS about USB and the Logitech Wingman Joystick, which has "disappeared", along with all USB functionality.

I've not mentioned this in my thread, but this go-round with Windows98SE has presented as many problems in ten days or so as any prior install of that OS version ever presented me with in 4-5 years of use!   Weird, that reluctance to cooperate!

Bizarre.

You can play Silent Threat if you want, but it's not great. The fan remake, Silent Threat Reborn, is a big step up.

You can still play the original Silent Threat via FSPort mentioned above although the AI will be slightly different.

@Kiwi- do you have a retail copy of Freespace 2? It is necessary to get all the enhancements this community has developed over the years.
Oh, and to join the chorus of informing voices- CD2 is the movies. I could dig out my old copy of FS1 to check, but I'm pretty sure (both from the consensus, and from memory).

It is my recollection that I bought the pair at pretty much the same time, and I am almost certain I've seen the sequel in the past couple of weeks, when I pulled out Freespace 1 and Starlancer, together, as my first two oldies games experiments for my pair of oldies PCs I'd reassembled from my collection of unsold older hardware (plus new purchases of sound cards when my old ones wouldn't work!)

Incidentally, I don't think I've seen much information, if any at all, about that Silent Threat Reborn version.  I'll have to look into it.

{P.S. added in Edit: I slept somewhat poorly last night, and rose fairly early, so I think I'll try to get some sleep a bit earlier tonight than my usual 11:30 PM or so (CDST, still an hour away).}

Well, you can get it from right here on HLP - it's a subforum of FSPort.

If so, it's going by a different forum name or else the letters HLP aren't really the right anagram.

I'm not even sure I know which is the parent forum I'm supposed to find the HLP inside of.

Uh, okay. HLP is Hard Light Productions. Just go to the forum index - hit 'forums' in that top bar - and then select 'Freespace Port'. From there, go to 'Silent Threat Reborn.'

Hard Light Productions is often abbreviated as HLP, though sometimes people also say Hard Light in short. You are at HLP right now.

FreeSpace Conversion, actually. Not FreeSpace Port.
