Download FSO 3.6.10 RC2 (link in my signature).
Extract the .exe files to your \freespace2\ folder.
Use the Launcher to select fs2_open_3_6_10_RC2_debug.exe as the used build.
Run the game as far as you can or until you get to the main hall. Quit.
There is now a file called fs2_open.log in your \freespace2\data\ folder. Post it here.

Hmm. The .vp files seem intact. However, the -img2dds flag (or Compress non-compressed images) is a rather troublesome flag, since it reduces texture quality and can also cause peculiar errors. Tick it off and try again.

Are you using the 3.6.10 exe and mediavps?

You'd be better off with the 3.6.10 version (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61406.0.html) of the campaign, since not only will it solve your invisible weapons problem but will lessen the amount of debug warnings you get.

Done...
No changes.

PS I installed the game as it was said in the nooby Installation gide.
The Blue Planet was downloaded during the installation.

Yes.

The same problem with a Derelict Mod
Just hanging when I try to start the mission (just after breefing) or to choose a fighter.

System specs?

Also, I didn't notice the word "mission" before, so run the debug build again and try to load a mission. Post the new fs2_open.log after that.

Are you absolutely sure that the game hangs? The MediaVPs (especially MV_Complete since it contains even the advanced stuff) can be a strain. Generating the cache files for the models in particular can take significant amount of time, depending on hardware. Once the cache files have been generated, however, things willl be faster. I'd recommend you to try loading a mission and waiting for it for several minutes. If after that you're still sure that it just hangs, we'll figure out something else.

A "Screenshot" of the last picture that was in game before the hanging, music, no responce from the control.

Today there was a "Screenshot" of the loading indicator (mission loading) 100% loaded I went out of room for 5 -7 minutes - no changinges at all when i returned home.

PS
I have Babylon 5 at full quality without any such problems.

It could be what I just explained after that sentence.

You seem to be using the word "screenshot" in some new meaning, but I think I got the idea.

Try running the game in windowed mode (it is in the Dev Tool list under the Features tab in the Launcher) to see if something happens in Windows while you're trying to play.

Also, hang on for a moment. I'll try to split and move this to the support board, since this no longer concerns just Blue Planet.

Tried to launch the FS2 original campaign - received message about missing ship models.

Treid to launch Blue Planet in window mode - same problem.
No unusual signals from Windows.
Looked into the task Manager - 2 "Free Space 2" (not responding) an 1 FS2 (normal).

Disabling your anti-virus can increase load times depending on how it likes larger files (found this with BtRL).

Yes.
Also i downloaded 3.6.10 version of the Campaign (The link of the Darius), and the result is same - hanged game.
Deleted INI and BMP - works perfectly (for now) and the weapons fire is fine.
I'll try to do the same with Derelict campaign.

Well you see what that's doing is telling Freespace not to load the mediavps (in most cases). Leading to my conclusion that something is wrong with your mediavps.
Title: Re: FSO freezes when loading a mission

What if i unpack the Mediavps (the complete pack) and replace the original VPS by the unpacked ones?
Title: Re: FSO freezes when loading a mission
Post by: Jeff Vader on May 24, 2009, 09:22:35 am
The .bmp is a bitmap. A picture. You can see it under the Launcher's MOD tab if your currently selected mod has a bitmap in the folder and the mod.ini file is referencing to it.

And yes, deleting mod.ini files makes the game engine to not use the MediaVPs with the mods.

Perchance you should make sure that all your drivers are up to date. Especially the graphics card drivers. Also, your rig probably can handle all the MediaVPs, but you might want to try it without the advanced stuff. So
- move MV_Complete away from your entire \freespace2\ directory
- go to the 3.6.10 MediaVPs release thread (link in my signature) and download MV_Assets, MV_Core and MV_Effects
- place these .vp files to your \mediavps\ folder
- try to run the game.

Hmm, I'm thinking corrupted MVPs
Nope. 5253 is the magic number.

What if i unpack the Mediavps (the complete pack) and replace the original VPS by the unpacked ones?
:wtf: Uh, wut.

I want to take Mediavps complete pack (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html).
Unpack it.
Use the files from pacto replace th VP files uses in game for now.
Will it do do any result?
Title: Re: FSO freezes when loading a mission
Post by: Jeff Vader on May 24, 2009, 10:00:19 am
You want to extract the contents of MV_Complete and use the files without them being packed into a .vp? You can do that, but it won't accomplish anything.

.vp is a convenience format. Instead of forcing people to fiddle with the \data\ folder and sorting stuff into proper subfolders, they just take one .vp file, punch it into a mod folder and that's it. If you extract the contents of MV_Complete and place the files properly into subfolders under freespace2\mediavps\data\ , it will have exactly the same effect as just having MV_Complete in \freespace2\mediavps\ .

That being re-downloading the MVPs from the release thread in the Freespace Upgrade Project forum, not the installer?

Because it sounds kinda like corrupt MVPs. Or did we already go over this?
Title: Re: FSO freezes when loading a mission
Post by: Jeff Vader on May 24, 2009, 10:40:34 am
The MV_Complete seems to be complete, as in it has 5253 files. My suggestion was to try without adveffects but we'll see.

 Deleted Complete pack.
Put effects, core, assets. - still freezing
Removed effects - still freezing
removed INI - works perfectly

The moment before freezing (it was during the weapon loading) i saw that every gun and rocket have detailed info.
Now, without INI there is no such info

Remember, all that removing the .ini does is turn off the MediaVPs.

Maybe your computer just isn't powerful enough to handle the MVPs?

You did redownload them from the release thread, not from the installer, right?

Maybe he needs to clear his cache?

Depends. If you've selected the \mediavps\ folder as a mod, they will be used regardless of how many mod.inis you happen to destroy. If you get purdy graphics with, for example, Blue Planet even though you've removed the mod.ini from the \blueplanet\ folder, something wrong is definitely taking place.

PS
Is there any special screenshots folder or i need to use graphical editor to make screenies from the game?
FSO is handy in this regard. If you hit PrintScreen during gameplay, it'll take a screenshot and save it automatically to \freespace2\screenshots\ in .tga format. You may want to / need to convert it to .jpg or .png before posting.

Give us screenshots of your FS2 directory and your MediaVPs folder.

Try running the game with only the MediaVPs selected as a mod (select the MVPs folder in the Launcher's mod tab.) See if you still get the issue.

He did, it sounds like.

Can you please just try using the MediaVPs themselves as a mod? Nothing else?

Also, try running a debug build (3.6.10 RC2 debug, or something ending in -d) until the game crashes, then posting your fs2open log from Freespace 2/data. We haven't done that yet, have we?

There is no cashe folder in Freespace2\Data\

Hmmmmm

People...
After that i tried to launch Derelict with Mod.INI
IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!
And now i saw the really High qualiti FS2
Trying now with other mods

Blue planet works fine.

Looks like I just forgot to use newly downloaded  Media VPs Packages as a mod :( and game was unable to use them by default...
Sorry.

Question.
There is FPS, and system info on my HUD
Anyway to turn this out?
PS There are turned off in Launcher

There is another freezing.
i understood that i used fs2_open_3_6_10.exe (and debugger)

Cose fs2_open_3_6_10RC2.exe...
And received usual freeze

Wait, wuh? Okay, if you go back to fsopen 3.6.10, not 3.6.10 RC2, does it stop freezing?

You should run a debug build, load a mission, quit, and post your log file here.

Just for ****s and giggles, try running the game with

Either manually add it to "custom flags" or locate it in Troubleshooting features called "Disable GLSL (shader) support".

Mmh. More specifically, the OpenGL drivers for it.

You might have luck in finding the OpenGL DLL file (atioglxx.dll if I recall correctly) from an older driver and copying that into your FreeSpace directory. Or you might not. A working file is somewhere in these forums I think, but I'll be damned if I remember where, and searching it might take a while (and success is not guaranteed anyways).

For now you can use the -no_glsl option and at least the game runs, right?
