Announcing the immediate availability of FS2_Open 3.6.10 RC3. This is likely the final release version and if no serious issues are discovered will be re-released as 3.6.10 final.
RC3 is based on SVN trunk 5209.
Windows builds were using Visual C++ 6.0, compressed as zip for ease of use and distribution
OS X builds were made using command line xcodebuild on a PowerMac G4 with running Leopard 10.5.7, and Xcode 3.1.2.
Linux builds were made on Ubuntu 9.04 32bit using the standard build-essential compiler installation*
This includes all previous fixes and fixes several critical bugs in RC2, including:
- Fixed voice recognition
- Fix for voice messaging code
- Bad mod data file warning system
- Mantis 1915 (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=1915)
Windows builds were compiled to include both Text-to-Speech and Voice Recognition support (and it should work this time)**
Don't use Inferno builds unless you're playing Inferno, or TBP, or any other mod with a gargantuan amount of ships
This build probably breaks multiplayer compatibility with RC2, and definitely with RC1 or earlier. So try to be sure to use it with other RC3 builds. And as always, you can't mix Inferno and non-Inferno builds.
Launchers, if you don't have one already:
Windows: Launcher 5.5d (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher55d.rar) (new launcher coming soon)
OS X: Soulstorm's OS X Launcher 3.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,51391.0.html)
Linux: YAL (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53206.0.html) or here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44204.0.html) or whatever you can figure out.

Inferno (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/WIN/fs2_open_3_6_10_RC3_INF.zip)
OS X
Regular (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/OSX/FS2_Open-3.6.10_RC3.dmg)
Inferno (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/OSX/FS2_Open-3.6.10_RC3_INF.dmg)
Linux
Regular (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/LINUX/fs2_open_3_6_10_RC3.tar.bz2)
Inferno (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/LINUX/fs2_open_3_6_10_RC3_INF.tar.bz2)
This is not a one-stop shop to make your FSO the prettiest it can be! These are only the FS2_Open executables. If you're starting from a fresh retail or GOG install, you probably want the MediaVPs as well, which should be stickied in a post in the Freespace Upgrade Forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,120.0.html). For a full blown install it all solution, look at Turey's FSO Installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/), but there have been reports of corruption with the 3.6.10 MediaVPs, so you might want to get those separately.
As always, use Mantis (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis) for any new bugs, or if you can't activate your account, post here.
See the RC1 thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61891.0.html) for info on new features.
* - This also included using OpenAL Soft (libopenal.so.1) instead of the OpenAL SI (libopenal.so.0), so a symlink creation may be necessary in case it is reported as missing. If you run into this issue (likely on Fedora, maybe others), cd to /usr/lib, and '(sudo) ln -s libopenal.so.0 libopenal.so.1'. Then pester your distro to update its OpenAL package to OpenAL Soft.
** - Voice recognition seems to be working now. I suggest testing the Experimental->Voice Recognition (-voicer) option with windowed mode enabled, which makes it easier to terminate when you have trouble. Post any new information in Mantis and refer to #1906 Mantis report (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=1906).

Don't look at me if it does. As far as I'm aware RC3 and RC2 should be compatible. That said it still makes sense to update and RC1 definitely isn't compatible with RC2 or RC3.

:)
-
bows and kisses the feet of those coder ppl........
:nervous:
-
Can we have the changelog ? What are the difference between the RC 2 and the RC 3 ?
-
The major changes are in the first post.
Not much has changed. That's the whole point of Release Candidates.
-
Is Inferno different from regular in any way other than the ship limit?
If so, why not just bump the regular limit and be done with it?
-
Is Inferno different from regular in any way other than the ship limit?
If so, why not just bump the regular limit and be done with it?
It bumps a couple of other limits as well AFAIK, and to be safe with these changes, stores pilot files in a different place.
A major issue with bumping it would be that all current pilot files would be rendered useless, at least I think. Also not sure how Inferno interacts with multi.
-
It works with multi now, thanks to Karajorma and testers. But multi pilots get their own folder too, and inferno games can't see regular games, I think.
-
The pilot file issues are probably the biggest issues now IIRC.
-
if the major problem would be the pilots fies issue , then would it be fair to at some point say the branches will be merged for 3.7 or another build so ppl will realise that at this point the change happens , then this would be a one build for all , maybe like the inferno build does now this could create its own folder.
this way it would make things a little easier for ppl to have the right build and stop the need to build the inf builds on each release
-
Voice recognition works now, too. Great work. :)
-
Uhm, RC3 is throwing me "FSO Has detected X errors when starting, blah blah blah...it's not SCP's fault it's the mod's, blah blah blah." whenever I launch my mod. Is there a way to remove this? It's annoying.
I know my mod has debug errors, and if I wanted to hear about them, I'd run a debug build. Thing is, I want to complete the modpack before addressing debug errors, and the stupid thing is slowing my progress down by a fair bit by making me have to close the window every time I start FSO to make sure it still starts.
Can it be turned off? Because it's seriously annoying and non-contributive.
Some of these errors can't even be fixed by myself, and the whole thing runs fine even with the error. As such I am unable to get rid of it, and now I keep getting bugged about something that doesn't matter.
-
im sure but some one will tell me im wrong that you can use this
- no_warn
in the command line
i may be completely wrong though
:nervous:
-
..and the whole thing runs fine even with the error...
That's why it exists in the first place. Coders are tired of fixing things when there's so much error-throwing data in the first place. Assuming that it's running fine doesn't mean it's really running fine. You could end up trying to change something later and wondering why it's not doing anything, when it's because the engine is already doing everything it can to cover for broken data. Then there's complaints that something doesn't work, when it's really the broken data causing the feature to be masked in the first place. I'm not saying this new alert is perfect, but that's why it's there.
-
Oh hey. -no_warn worked.
Yeah, well, it'd help if fixing error-throwing data wasn't so aggravating. I mean, some errors mean like absolutely nothing to me - I have no clue what the message means. Most of them tell you what's wrong and where, so I fix those, but stuff like "ASSERT: COUNT < MAX_INTS" is just...not helpful...(nor is the stuff about inverted bounding boxes, whatever the hell those are).
Better error messages would probably mean that there'd be less of them showing up. Though I do admit a lot of them are very good, unlike some other games which just crash on you and never tell you a thing.
-
Asserts aren't warnings, they're something that's actually broken. You can't skip past one of those anyway, so that's not what that dialog is for. And if they're not clear, you can always ask. When you find one in specific, point it out and it can probably be clarified.
-
Ah figured out what it was using the HARD WAY for removing stuff from the table line by line.
Turns out the game asserts with that when a ship has 4 or more banks in a single turret, not an invalid set of integers like what I found by searching the forums.
Now the modpack is bug free! Yay!
I suppose I should thank you for making me go through that necessary stuff now instead of later :P
-
Turns out the game asserts with that when a ship has 4 or more banks in a single turret, not an invalid set of integers like what I found by searching the forums.
Yes, note that turret weapon banks are similar to fighter banks, in that you can only have three primaries or four secondaries. Note that banks don't really correspond to firepoints.
-
Some time ago I got very large number of assertions ,here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,62714.0.html
is a thread where I asked for help ,if you get an assertion ,you may check this thread out ,Kajorama and Wanderer helped me solve quite a lot of them.

I'm not receiving the confirmation email, and I will forget, so...
When building I'm getting this from the openSUSE automatic test tools:
I: A function overflows or underflows an array access. This could be a real error,
but occasionaly this condition is also misdetected due to loop unrolling or strange pointer
handling. So this is warning only, please review.
W: fs2_open arraysubscript ai/aicode.cpp:7043
W: fs2_open arraysubscript hud/hudwingmanstatus.cpp:685, 686
aicode.cpp is a
if (current_bank == -1) {
swp->next_secondary_fire_stamp[current_bank] = timestamp(500);
return rval;
}
funny, but if that '-' isn't a typo I suppose you know what you are doing.
But the hud one seems like a real bug. Inside a "for ( i = 0; i < MAX_SHIPS_PER_WING; i++ ) {" loop (being MAX_SHIPS_PER_WING == 6) you are doing a
sx = HUD_wingman_status_single_coords[gr_screen.res][i][0];
sy = HUD_wingman_status_single_coords[gr_screen.res][i][1];
with
int HUD_wingman_status_single_coords[GR_NUM_RESOLUTIONS][4][2] =
Since 6>4... bug?
And... since when nobody compiles wxFRED?
- To compile it in a modern system, wx-config must be called with "--unicode=no".
- The wxFRED_SOURCES variable misses 3/4 of the source files.
- Compile with "-DEMBED_XRC_RESOURCES" requires a missing wxfred_xrc.inl file. I, that don't talk autotools language, have fixed it adding
wxfred2/wxfred_xrc.cpp: wxfred2/wxfred_xrc.inl
wxfred2/wxfred_xrc.inl:
wxrc -c -o wxfred2/wxfred_xrc.inl wxfred2/wxfred.xrc
to code/Makefile.am.
-
Not sure about that aicode line, but the hud line is a nice catch. The 6>4 overflow will only happen if the mission only contains one player wing, and that wing contains six ships. That almost never happens, but it is still possible. (And it might become more common in the future if the interface art is upgraded for six ships.)
Fixed in both 3.6.10 and trunk. :)
-
I'd think that the aicode bug would happen somewhat often in various situations, so I have to wonder why we've never seen it before. And it's a retail bug too. :wtf:
From the looks of that it seems like we just got lucky and earlier checks end up making sure that it doesn't get to that function if the current secondary weapon is -1. It does point out a similar problem in aibig though:
int current_bank = tswp->current_secondary_bank;
weapon_info *swip = &Weapon_info[tswp->secondary_bank_weapons[current_bank]];
where current_bank is checked to be valid on the next line, after it's already been used. There is another one like that in aicode as well. I see similar problems with current_primary_bank in some places too. And again, it seems to try and work it out in other functions such that it doesn't happen, but the whole thing seems extremely error prone.
-
Good catches. Also, no one's been working much on wxFRED these days. We'll probably be trying to do a wxLauncher soon though, so those might still be good to know. wxFRED might come after the launcher.
-
The aicode one is definately a bug.
But, it's probably grabbing the value from next_primary_fire_stamp[2] (if I remember how structs are laid out)
I'm pretty sure it should be !=
I'm a bit curious about the wingmen one. I'd flag it as a bug, but I would've expected a crash. Dereferencing higher in that array should do bad stuff (think about the layout of the array in memory)!
-
Dereferencing higher in that array should do bad stuff (think about the layout of the array in memory)!
It's not a dereference here, it's a write. - Not enough sleep it seems.... But yeh, either way it would lead to an operation on memory that is adjacent to the actual array == bad stuff happens.
Nice finds RedDwarf!
-
nope, definately a dereference - it's gotta dereference the value at 'i' in the array HUD_wingman_status_single_coords[gr_screen.res] and then it's gotta dereference that to get element 0 :P
sx = HUD_wingman_status_single_coords[gr_screen.res][i][0];
Unless I've got my terminology half-backwards.
-
Oh **** sorry, I was looking at the aicode one, but reading the last section of your post where you talk about the dereference. My bad :(
-
I'm a bit curious about the wingmen one. I'd flag it as a bug, but I would've expected a crash. Dereferencing higher in that array should do bad stuff (think about the layout of the array in memory)!
It is a crash, but due to traditional mission design, it is a crash that has most likely never been attempted. It can only happen if a) the player's wing is the only wing present; and b) the player's wing has more than four ships.
-
And it's very rare for someone to stick more than 4 ships in a player wing because the loadout can't show the last two.
-
Believe me it's been attempted many times. I know I've done it a few. Probably why that warning got added to FRED about player wings having more than 4 ships.
-
Can you try to make a scramble mission with a six-ship Alpha wing being the only wing present? That's the only situation I can think of that might trigger the bug.
-
I can't activate my Mantis account.
-
Maybe I'll get time to try this out tomorrow.
-
I can't activate my Mantis account.
We know. We're working on it!

Sorry missed that reply somehow. I'll give it a shot since no one else has.
Well nothing I tried produced a crash even in 3.6.10 RC3. I put the status dots for the 2 fighters in a weird place (center of the screen above the targeting) but worked. Latest 3.6.11 only resulted in a problem if all 6 ships were player ships in multi. Figured it would. Didn't crash but gave a ships without primaries warning window when I tried to commit and I had to escape out. Didn't try client side.
-
Did you try anything prior to RC3? Did you try single-player?
-
Didn't try anything before RC3 but I did try RC3 in single.
-
=
-
No. Just the fixes from before the nightlies started up again.
-
where are we with this build ? i have not found any show stopping problems personally in this build , both normal and inf ...;; has any one else found any?
-
Is no one still reproducing the chat crash now? It seemed there were a couple of people who had reverted back to RC2 because of something like that. Not sure what the status of that is.
-

+1 point for the openSUSE automatic test tools...
I'm not much of a SVN guy, but it seems the patch only ended in trunk. The patch is in revision 5325 and the web interface says fs2_open_3_6_10 tag still is at 5210.
Between, I found another buffer overflow when using FSPort, it is reported in mantis. Since openSUSE packages are built with extra runtime overflow detection by policy this is a showstopper for us. So, I would be easier for openSUSE is this overflow is also fixed for 3.6.10.
-
Sound Issue.
In either "Generic Software" or "SB X-Fi Audio [9C00], it does not retain the volume level for effects.
I have to go in to options (which graphically shows the last setting) and re-adjust it.
And "Generic Software" sound fuzzy/muted just a tad.
Win7 64bit, it may just be me.
Retail CD install, Retail Patched. With or without adjustments in FSO Launcher (Mods, other settings, etc).
-
Another good find RedDwarf.
I'm going to compile an OS X build with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 and put it through its paces (Xcode is built on the GCC compiler like openSUSE).
We always knew a codebase as old as FS2_Open's was going to have many such coding mistakes, as a hangover from the insecure coding practices of the 90's. There's been a recent influx of devs with the coding experience and the inclination to find and fix these bugs, so the next few months should see big improvements.
-
I wonder if any of these were turning up in the preFAST logs - there were upwards of 1300 warnings that I was going through by hand!
I'll run it over the latest trunk and see what turns up (I'll post another log in preFAST output)
-
There's just so many.
Sigh. I get all motivated to fix them (or at least make a dent in the total number). And then I run a profiling tool, and the output has one thousand plus hits.
And then I lose all motivation, because I don't know where to start.
-

chat crash in game or in the lobby , i haven't seen either ...
or haven't been in game where it has happened..

Well, the six-ship wing bug is definitely patched in 3.6.10. It may have a different revision number because more stuff has been committed to trunk since then.
-
The tag hasn't been updated anyway, I'd look at the 3.6.10 branch. We'll be making a new tag from it.

Tag vs branch, true. Someday I should learn to use SVN...

Mantis 1940 (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=1940) just added.
Affects all RC's and Nightlies since RC, and I have no idea how far back it goes.
I could have caught this sooner, but I never use FRED. I decided to make sure of my mission changes by using FRED since it errors faster than loading the game up.
**Edit: This can be ignored. The limit works as intended. Just had to re-work the mission.
-
When I try to host a game, it loads the missions, but freezes and the game crashes once "ip banning list" pops up. Same problem with RC2. Any thoughts?
-
I had that exact same problem with TBP. Turned out it didn't like me having 13 missions named the same thing. 3.6.11 doesn't have the issue. I'd suggest checking your mission directory for unnecessary duplicates of missions.
-
For some reason I find a massive performance increase in the way of less stuttering over RC2 on a stresstest mission I made. No bugs that aren't related to my sloppy FREDing and tabling so far.
-
I've found that even Massive Battle is not the slideshow it used to be. Now when I get up close to a ship, I have a sense of speed that wasn't there before.
-
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of a bug, fs_open versions till 3.6.9. (included) apply tbms in direct priority order, from the highest priority to the lowest one. In this way, the lowest priority entries override the rest. As example, this issue makes impossible overriding mediavps tbm settings from any tbm inside a main mod which uses this art enhancement as a secondary mod. The only way you have is overriding the whole table as explained below.
Is this still an issue we need to be concerned with, or does the section above the NOTE apply?
-
Technically, yeah, until 3.6.10 is final, and even then, TBP still officially uses 3.6.9 and thus is affected by that as well. It may no longer be extremely important, but it's still worth a mention.
-
Would it be possible to add these two entries into code\mission\missionbriefcommon.cpp:
case 'w':
return BRIEF_TEXT_WHITE;
case 'y':
return BRIEF_TEXT_YELLOW;
The colors in question are already #define'd, they just are not allocated and it would open up some nice enhancements to the mission briefs. Enhancements that I'd really like to see make it in to the final MediaVP's.
I realize we're closed for feature requests and it really is not a bug per-se that they are not associated, but it is not introducing any drastically new elements that I can conceive as breaking anything.
I should note: I have also compiled in a build and it works exactly as expected.
-
Don't see why not.

This was a bug I discovered quite long time ago and Taylor (IIRC) fixed it, but 3.6.9. is fully affected. Newest (and not so new) builds work perfectly fine. There should be and old thread about it.
You can make a very simple test with two tbms (example aaa-shp.tbm and bbb-shp.tbm, but use them from different folders/vps) which change any ship model you want (aaa-shp.tbm: Uly into Herc, bbb-shp.tbm: Uly into Herc2). Go to F3 lab and look how your Uly looks.
I've also updated that wiki page saying that this is a solved bug in order to avoid misunderstandings.
-
Had the first standalone crash from RC3 that I can't explain or didn't involve a null vec3d. Retail data on the standalone. It appears to have gone crazy as soon as it loaded a Lilith model and then proceed to get progressively worse until it finally crashed a few missions later.

Bugger me, that's a lot of assertions!
-
that is a lot of assertions , and NO @kara
-
I have noticed that the briefing icon positions are no longer scaling for the 1024x768 interface, like they used to. The game now uses the 640x480 positions regardless of the resolution, which can look funny since the icons only take up a small portion of the briefing window. I wanted to make sure this wasn't intentional before I post it on Mantis.
-
with the recent changes within the 3.6.11 nightly builds that have speeded up how the game reacts .... faster load times and faster fps ... is there anyway that this can be incorporated into the release of RC3 as a lot of problems are being caused by slow load up in multi ....
or will we have to wait until 3.6.11 ?
personally i would prefer to see RC3 being held back a little longer to get this done instead of waiting another few months for 3.6.11 being released to fix these problems...
-
Any new sex pee's?

There have been 165 commits to trunk since RC3 was branched off. I'm not sure that's feasible! :D
-
When I clicked on one of the icons of a ship in the mission briefing using the 3.6.10 RC3 build, I got this error:
fs2_open_3_6_10_RC3 caused an Access Violation in module atioglxx.dll at 001b:692dd990.

When I run regular 3.6.10, I hardly ever get errors, but when I tried any of the RC builds of 3.6.10, either RC1, RC2, or RC3, the game crashes all the time and is very unstable. Why is this?
-
First, you should make sure your gfx card driver is up-to-date.
Second, could you run a debug build and post the log here?
Third, do those crashes still happen if you disable GLSL (in the Launcher, under Troubleshoot)?
Fourth, is there a rogue atioglxx.dll in your FreeSpace folder?

What is your definition for "regular"? If anything, the RC's are the most regular 3.6.10 builds. Especially RC3.
If E's advises produce no results, go to the troubleshooting FAQ (link in my signature), scroll down to Graphical issues, take a look at the third problem and act according to the instructions.

Third. I'm not seeing Disable GLSL under my troubleshoot options.
Fourth. If there were a rogue file, I have no idea where it would be.
Fifth. After reviewing my FS2 error log file, it seems that every crash I have ever had has something to do with that atioglxx.dll file.

Nehemiah: That looks like a mini-dump. Would you be able to post fs2_open.log from within the C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\data directory?
-
Sorry, wrong log. There is a file called fs2_open.log in your data folder, post that here.
As for your graphics card, make sure that the driver is the most recent version available for your card. Go to http://ati.amd.com to check.

What folder would that be in in the data directory? I'm looking in the data directory, and all I see are a lot of other folders and a text file named fs2_open. Here is what it says:

Those files should be moved out of your FreeSpace directory, and into separate mod directories.
As for the crashes, go to the FS2Open FAQ (link is in JeffVader's sig), and find the post about the alternative atioglxx.dll files, and see if those solve the problem.
-
To tell you the truth, I have never upgraded my graphics card driver since I have had this computer. I am downloading ATI's most recent update now.
-
It's oft been recommended not to install FS2 into a path with spaces in the filename too. You might want to try C:\Games\FreeSpace2 instead. And yes those random vps need to come out.
-
A couple of editor's picks from the log.
OpenGL Renderer : RADEON XPRESS 200M Series SW TCL x86/MMX/3DNow!/SSE2
Your GPU doesn't sound very rock 'n roll. If you experience performance issues, you may want to ditch MV_Advanced, since it is meant more for the high-end gaming rigs, and in general laptops are not high-end gaming rigs.
Searching root pack 'C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\mediavps\MV_Music.vp' ... 15 files
You seem to have an older MV_Music, since it only has 15 files, whereas mine has 32.
