I can't model or texture for the life of me, but I thought this would be a nice idea and rather easy to execute. An asteroid with dock points would be pretty neat for FREDding things, such as mining operations or Armageddon like scenarios, where you want something to "land" on the asteroid. It could also be used for ships hiding and such.
Just throwing it out there, if anyone wants to pick it up.

I wonder what BtRL used... (too lazy to open up FRED)

fixored :D
The large Scaroid from the BtRL demo has a docking point.
-
Thanks :) Damn... how the hell did I get into using them interchangeably?
-
Asteroids are generated as random floating models in the mission and not as actual ships, so they can't be added docking points (at least to my knowledge).
However, isn't there an asteroid model similar to the spacehunk model that you can spawn in FRED? I know Transcend used something like that in the first mission and made it self destruct to make it look like a pirate ambush.
-
Yes ,there is ,Transcend indeed used them ,they are also some asteroid models in BTRL ,but they are all very large (the biggest one has a dockpoint). I also seen dockable asteroid in FSPort (though small and lo-poly).
-
The NTF Boadicea is essentially an installation built into an asteroid, which can be substituted for a mining colony if you don't want to do any modding.

Asteroidfields are created as random...*snip*
fixored :D
The asteroid models are exactly that, models.
You can extract them together with the textures, create a mod folder and a .tbm file and edit them in PCS2.
The ones from the new media.vps looks nice, even from a close distance.
-
Well, yes. Asteroids generated in fields are created as random models. ;)
-
This may be a tad obvious, but then why not edit all the models for the roids used in the field generator,
then every roid would be dockable...
-
No ,they will not ,just because randomly generated asteroids are handled in a different way than ships.
-
besides, an object needs to be stationary to dock with it.
