Title: Taking good screenshots for desktop wallpapers
Post by: dANGER boy on June 06, 2009, 12:18:54 pm
I've been trying to figure this out but haven't been able to.  I use a 1680x1050 resolution so sometimes it can be hard to find adequate resolutions for wallpapers.  Is there a way or function to disable the HUD and everything else in Freespace so I can take a fullscreen screenshot?

Damn, why does it always have to be so easy...

But another quick question, more like a technical issue.  When I try taking screenshots (using the Print Screen button on the keyboard), afterwards when I paste it to MS Paint or something all that shows up is a black box.  Any ideas?  It works for other games.  I just tried out Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and the screenshot comes out ok...

You shouldn't need to use MS Paint - Print Screen should save an image in the Freespace2/Screenshots folder.

Hey, thanks!  Didn't know there was that folder!  Now I can finally get an eyecandy screenshot.

And use IrfanView to convert them from TGA. Why do they save as .TGA and not PNG or something?

On Windows, I use Quicktime PictureViewer to open them as .TGA, then copy-paste to Paint and save it as a PNG over there.

maybe because the picture is all black?..

if you are not sure, download Gimp, it's free and will open almost any image format available.

For relevance, ThumbView (http://www.seriema.net/thumbview/). Basically enables thumbnails for DDS, TGA, PCX and other non-natively supported image types on Windows Explorer.

Isn't that the same as IrfanView Thumbnails?

Yep, Irfanview is where it's at. Small, loads fast, handles pretty much any image format for both read and write. One of the first things I install on any new machine. :)

I don't know how to reset the count, but mine reset itself a few months ago and I don't know why. It was a few thousand before it reset.

Also various audio, video, and text formats. The Paint plugin is perfect for leveling crooked photos.

sorry, off-topic...
