Title: FreeSpace Wiki Netiquette: An Invitation
Post by: Mobius on June 07, 2009, 11:36:54 am
The Wiki is a impressively effective tool, but it's sad when certain edits show disrespect towards other Wiki contributors. I'm not here to blame any specific contributors ("Mention the sin, not the sinner" - Italian proverb), but there's a disencouraging tendence on the Wiki which (IMO) should be discussed.

When changes to an article are relevant/radical people should always use the article's talk page to check if the changes are appropriate or not. If the talk page is unclear about that matter, post a comment on it and ask for clarifications. Do that even if you're about to edit an article following assumptions based on canon info, like "Should we use the info we have from FreeSpace Alpha and confirm that the GTF Apollo has a crewnumber of 2?". Following these basic hints would surely improve the modus operandi of the average Wiki contributor. Please don't reply with the classic "It's a Wiki so you have to accept the changes people make to your articles", because a) if the changes show disrespect and don't follow the basic hints, they're not acceptable and b) FS Wiki contributors know each other IVL so it's not impossible to take certain edits... personally.

I'm not here to discuss a specific episode accident, so let's prevent this from turning into a random discussion between two contributors.

This is an extreme. I can't see why in every single instance should the talk page be used.

THe problem with this statement is that you're trying to handle an Alpha promotional screenshot as canon as the final product. There is absolutely no reference to a two-seater Apollo, except in the intro cutscene. The cutscenes are known to be full of mistakes anyway, so there's no harm in being careful about analyzing them in terms of canonicity.

I didn't see anything that I would term as an "accident" since your little brawl with Snail. If you were more specific, we could carry on with the discussion more productively. Perhaps it's only you that would call in "accident."

Obviously, the "products" of spammers deserve a different treatment... but those are mere exceptions.

And no, I don't think that's an extreme. Deleting stuff with extreme prejudice is not good.

Oh geez, that was an example. Let's don't turn this into a General FreeSpace Discussion forum.

Is this (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Talk:242nd_Suicide_Kings) example more suitable?

You're wrong here. I haven't created this because of me and Snail - the reasons behind the creation of this thread are more recent than that episode.

You're free to behave well or not. I do ask/discuss before making radical changes - the fact that you don't is not my business because I'm not here to force you to change behavior. Mine is an invitation intended to prevent issues, the more people read it the better.

Mobius, this plane won't fly without being specific. What are the specific reasons that made you make this thread? I cannot see anything wrong in the Wiki or how contributors behave with each other. There must be some offhand comment that you took as a personal offense.

As for your Talk:242nd Suicide Kings initiative: Show us some real canon evidence that says that the 242nd was reassigned to the Bastion. I can't remember anything like that from the game. If it's speculation, then it's not appropriate (they could have been reassigned to any other Orions, not only the Bastion).

May I know why you're derailing this thread?

Mine was an invitation people are free to follow or not. I don't really understand what you're trying to say here, because I noticed how some contributors undo changes with extreme prejudice. Do you want me to specify their names? I won't, because this is not a flaming thread and it will hopefully never be.

Don't discuss the 242nd issue here. That was an example.

May I know why you're acting like a mod?

Mobius, you're not a wiki mod. Kindly stop acting like you are and trying to set wiki policy without any attempt to discuss why such a policy is necessary or wise.

Given that this topic has been written up as a policy I'm closing it. If you want to start a thread discussing why a policy might be necessary with relevant examples feel free to do so but do not start issuing directives again or the thread will simply be closed.
