So. Recently installed windows 7 RC, because I'm too cheap to shell out for a copy of Vista. It works nicely, but I have a few problems.
1st: Whenever I try to load a mod in FSO Launcher, I get a "Could not write 'Mod settings.ini'. This happens FOR ALL MODS with folders, except for mediavps. Now, so far nothing strange has happened, but I want to see if this is a harmless error, or something more serious.
2nd: I get the "Cannot Save Pilot File" error. I have plenty of HD space open, and I know the Data/Player/Single folder is there. Any hints?

You have installed FS to your "Program Files" directory. Try running it with admin privileges (right-click on the executable, and select "Run as Administrator"). If that doesn't work, move the entire Freespace directory out of "Program Files", and try it there.
Also, you should check if the directory <freeSpace2>\data\players\single exists. Create it manually if it doesn't. Reading posts FTW
On second thought, are you certain that data\players\single exists? Note the plural "players".

Well, I didn't have it in Program Files, but running the launcher as an administrator fixed everything, so thanks.

If the RC has the XP mode... try running it inside that.
Sorry I've been loosely staying on top of the releases.

That won't help (IIRC, the XP VM doesn't have access to hardware accelerated graphics), and is quite unneccessary. FSO runs perfectly fine on 7 (and Vista before that), without dicking around with compatibility mode.
I don't know where FOX2PRO's problem came from in this case (although I would guess that some directories had the write-protected bit set, for whatever reason), but in principle, FSO just worksTM.

Some funky issues can pop up even on XP, if one attempts to play FSO with a non-administrator user account.

i can confirm that it works on WIN7 you just need to give full permissions for where it is...or run as admin it seems, it even works from the external disk on win7 , you get the old binary message but it works

I installed to C:\Games\Freespace2. I don't have any problems what so ever. I did not have to run "Take Ownership" on it. I do not have to "Run as Administrator" except for once.
I installed off the original Retail cd's. I ran the retail patch. I ran the retali version in Compatibility XP SP3 as Administrator to create the registry. I installed via Turey's installer everything BUT the mediavp's, which I already had.
I then ran the launcher ONCE as administrator to set my options. I then ran it like regular to select the mediavps and ran FSO.
No errors, and the only problems I have are with some scripts, and the fact that the Effects volume level set in Options refuses to stick.
