So i'm having trouble getting past this mission. Near the end when i have to disable to front cannons of the Abel? It shreds through the Temraraire within seconds! Its a pretty damn small window to act. Anyone got any tips aside from bringing it down to medium?
-
If Darius didn't balance that mission for Hard, which is more likely than not for user-created campaigns, there just might be no real way to get it disarmed in time. I don't remember that specific mission myself, so I'm not really sure how much time you're given to do the job.
-
The task didn't seem impossible, just Hard. Seconds is probably a not right. more like 30 seconds - a minute i think
-
Yeah, this is Forced Entry. Notoriously tricky
It shouldn't vary by difficulty level - the key is being in position in time.
Just make sure you have at least four (preferaby more) Trebuchets ready at the end of the mission. Don't use them earlier. As soon as the Temeraire jumps in, order all your ships to defend it, afterburn as fast as possible to the Temeraire, keep burning past it.
As soon as the Abel jumps in, lock on to one of the forward beams (use 'v' to target the turret under your reticle) and fire two Trebuchets at it. Then lock onto the other forward beam and Trebuchet it as well.
It might pay off to take out the two rear stinger beams as well. Use your remaining Trebuchets and primaries to do that.
The only other thing I usually Trebuchet in this mission is the main beam on the Lilith that jumps in.
Forced Entry is a really awesome mission (especially because of the music), but it's extremely unforgiving.
-
Choosing a correct loadout is extremely vital in Forced Entry. Use trebuchets, but don't bother loading them on your allies. The AI doesn't use Trebuchets properly IIRC.
-
yeah got the trebuchets loaded, tried em on the AI last few plays, even managed to take out the two front beams. Then the two small beams on its back took out the Temraire before i could take those out. I ended up using the perseus because it holds more trebuchets. But i think it has weaker armor? I've died more easily with the perseus than before
-
It's not that the Perseus has weak armour, it's rather that Darius buffed the damage of shockwaves to be highly destructive. I've died more times in Forced Entry due to bomb shockwaves rather than Shivan gunfire.
-
In Forced Entry, you could try using a Herc II with dual banks of Trebuchets. You'll spend most of the time lobbing those at beam cannons, so you can divert more energy to shields and engines. Use single-fire missile mode for every Shivan ship except the Abel.
When the Abel jumps in, dump all energy to engines and afterburn to the Shivan destroyer. Switch to dual-fire missile mode and target the main beam cannons the moment they enter the Trebuchet's lock range. Once they're destroyed, concentrate on the upper secondary beams.
I tried this method out on Very Easy and ended up with about four to seven spare Trebuchets remaining at the end of everything.
-
A single Trebuchet has enough force to knock out a Ravana's front beam if it hits the cannon from above, so fire the Trebuchet at an angle from the beam cannon and conserve your ammo.
-
Maxim. Its 3000-meter range and high anti-subsystem damage shan't be ignored.
-
upon checking my options, i realize i am actually playing this on medium. Sigh... Oh well. I almost got it down, i think if i dont do something stupid the next time through i will beat this.
-

Depends. The good-secondary-time SEXP is intended to solve that problem, I think...
-
...but unfortunately, it's impossible to know whether a mission designer put the right SEXPs in when you're loading out your wingmen. I never give them trebs unless they already have them. If they already do, I trust that the mission designer made sure they get used right. :)
-
consider the mirmy, in this case the 4 primaries will pay off if you load balors on them, and you get plenty of space to load trebs.
-
What would be even better is the inclusion of the Helios bomb in the weapons loadout. :drevil:
-
The Helios may be powerful, but it's too slow. In the case of the Temeraire, what you need is something that hits hard and fast. You only have thirty to sixty seconds to disable the Abel's beams; if you use the Helios, by the time they find their mark, the Temeraire's already dead.
-
I meant that it would be interesting to see the buffed up shockwaves rip through in formation Aeshmas as they never break formation and travel at a relatively slow speed.
-
Hmm ... you could use a Piranha, or an Infyrno...
-
Forced entry was quite easy on hard. Timing, timing...
-
Ack i finally got past it. Used a myrmidon armed with full Trebuchets. Promethius and Kayser. I managed to take out all four of its lasers, then let the bomber squadrons do the rest of the work while i ran away gallantly. And now to finish this awesome campaign! Thanks for the help guys.
-
Bomber squadrons? Didn't the Temeraire's torpedoes do the job?
-
The Temeraire's torpedoes do most of the damage, but the reinforcement bomber wing Delta as well as the Sanctuary wing Beta can be used to deal heavy blows against the Ravana.
-
Yeah i could have let the torpedoes take care of it.. but i was at had 5% armor left and i didnt feel like waiting an extra 2 minutes while the torpedoes chipped away at the Abel. Might as well let the bombers get some work in.
-
Really? I managed to beat this on my second try on Hard. I probably got super lucky though, and I did take a Herc II with dual trebbs.
I did however get stuck on the next time you see a bunch of shivan cap ships and need to disarm beams though.
-
Preserving the Balance? Or Keepers of Hell?
-
:wtf:
I thought we're talking about Forced Entry.
-
Come on, my friend. Read the darn thread.

Overlooked that bit...
I believe it's Preserving the Balance. Keepers of Hell is still quite a number of missions away.
-
Agreed, but I had to ask, since Preserving the Balance isn't that hard...
-
the trickiest thing is to take out the beams then quickly run back to the temraire and start killing the bombers and intercepting the bombs. in fact, dont even tell your wingmen to follow you. just have them defend the temraire. You can take out both beams within seconds.
-
The enemy fighters in PoB are so easy that after destroying the beams, got only 5 enemy kills at the maximum, on Hard difficulty. :(
-
I got stuck for unknown reasons unrelated to how I played the mission.
What happened was that after everything died, no Ancient ships showed up after the new shivan destroyers jump in. Then I fail the mission >.>
After I enabled cheats after getting frustrated, I magically passed the level.
-
wut
That's really bizarre. Looking at FRED, the new Shivan destroyers should jump in when you've taken out both all the existing Shivan destroyers and all the fighters/bombers. After that, the arrival of the Vishnan ships should be inevitable.
-
Are you running 3.6.10 RC3? Have you used that pilot file for multiple mods?
-
I did use the pilot for multiple mods, which is why I never really tried to get the issue solved. I assumed it was unique to me because I was stupid enough not to use separate pilots. And no, I think I was running RC2 at the time. Another oddity is that there is no fail mission debrief for that level.
Mind you, I did have a "wtf" moment when my wingman said "WE'RE ALL DOOMED" and the mission failed on me. I thought to myself that that couldn't possibly have been the end of the campaign, and I was relieved that I was right.
Meh. I'm on a new machine now, and if I ever feel like replaying BP, I know what to do ;)
-
i just noticed how impossible it is for me to bomb things in this mod... with the new shockwaves, my previous tactics of getting in real close and letting loose my twin nuggets of doom don't work cuz the shockwaves kill me.
-
Don't get too close, shockwaves have become a serious problem. I also used to get very, very close to the target (a few meters) before firing torpedoes.
Firing torpedoes also serves to divert the enemy's attention from you. If you're under attack and fire torpedoes on your target, the enemy will likely fire on the torpedoes and ignore you (unless priority SEXPs have been used).
-
I find that on hard I have plenty of time to get away from 50m. Energy management and tapping "Q" like a mother****er...
-
An entire fully shielded Shivan bomber wing (excluding Seraphims) can be ripped apart by shockwaves from their own bombs. This is caused by Harpooning one set of bombs when first fired, resulting in other bombs detonating destroying entire wings.
-
Which is realistic. It also add more tactics to the game...
-
Which is realistic.
What you meant to say there was 'I like it'.
You are not the arbiter of real-realism, Freespace-realism, or any other kind of realism.
There is nothing to say that BP's take on bomb shockwaves is any more believable than anyone else's.
-
Did Darius actually modify the bomb shockwaves in any way or did he just turn on the option in the ai tables for shockwaves to cause damage? (or knock out subsystems, whatever the hell it was called)
-
None of those. All I did was increase the raw damage of the Shivan Megabomb, which had the effect of making the shockwaves lethal :D
-
A direct consequence of a normal modification, then. I thought you used a FS1 style AI profile... :D
-
All this talk about shockwaves killing pilots made me realise that I was almost flying suicide when attacking the Sathanas. I flew either an Ursa or Boanerges with Helios torpedoes, get to 200m of the beam cannons, release and then fly OVER the beam cannon I was attacking.
-
Which is realistic.
No it isn't. Realism actually demands no shockwave at all, because there's not enough matter in deep space to sustain one. :p
As for Forced Entry, my winning formula in the past has been an Artemis bomber loaded down with two banks of Trebuchets and a bank of Tornadoes for anti-bomber work, plus a Maxim cannon for the primary.
-
An Athena?
-
Finally beat it... was a little surprised at it the ending. Seemed a little abrupt and anti climactic. Unless it was supposed to mirror the beginning of the FS2 campaign. But then again theres the expansion upcoming...
-
Huh? What are you talking about?
:D
-
Well the very last level i played,
the UED Wessel was destroyed by the GTVA Expeditionary Force. This is a slight nod, at least i think so, to Surrender Belsarius when that thingy was destroyed. Then everyone starts warping out and running and rebelling. And thats it. An abrupt ending/
Spoiler tagz pls - Darius
-
Well, it is supposed to set the tone for WiH, which is why I took it as it is, even though it surprised me the first time.
I think there is one thread on this board that discusses about...
...why the GTVA attempted to take Sol by force.

Heard of spoiler tags?
-
You'll find out a lot more about
the GTVA's reasons and the buildup for the attack
very soon.
-
Was it a nuclear wessel?
-
my apologies, haven't used spoiler tags before. i don't know whether it was Nuclear or not... you'll have to ask Volition :D
I'm a little surprised by Blue Planet at least. i was hoping to SEE a blue planet. i was disappointed.
Although this is not necessarily a bad thing.
-
Well, we're hard at work on War in Heaven, so never fear. The story continues.
-
my apologies, haven't used spoiler tags before.
All good :) Now you know.
