Title: Q: Permission to use FSU stuff
Post by: s9ilent on June 13, 2009, 06:59:27 pm
Hi, I'm interested in making a FS mod for another game (i.e. Bring the FS universe, into X3 Terran Conflict) and I was just wondering...

1) Can I do it? (legalities?)
2) Who do I have to ask for permission to use the FSU stuff? (Models, textures etc.)

As....
(Quoting wiki)
"Noncommercial or NonCommercial (nc): Licensees may copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and make derivative works based on it only for noncommercial purposes."
But only the game engine is open source... sooo...?

*edited fsU stuff (not fso)

First, you need to understand that FSO/SCP refers to the open-source game engine. It's free to use, but you can't sell what you make with it. I.e., the models and textures are not "FSO" stuff, that's FSU.

Nonetheless, it isn't as though nobody has done this sort of thing in the past.

Stand by for better info.

Probably best to only use models that have been made by fans, IE, hi-poly ones. Aren't the originals protected by copyright now?

Now, as in, the opposite of always?

w.r.t Use hi-poly's

Fair enough. But still, as a modder I'd feel fairly awful if I use other peoples stuff with out permissions. Who would I send a pm to about asking this sort of thing?

You could probably just post in the FSU board asking.
Or sooner or later, someone in it will venture here...

I think if in your mod's credits you just did something like this:

"Orion, hecate, fenris, ravana(...) models are from the Freespace Community Media VPs" (and if you want, provide a link), then none of the contributors would have a problem with it. If you do want to go further than that you could check the MVP readme for the credit list.

In fact it's really only situations where someone might try and pass MVP content off as their own work or even sell it that I can see there being 'issues'. The MVPs were created to make FS look better, and as far as I'm concerned the same is true when applied to FS stuff in other game engines. :)

I think you can feel free to use FSU stuff, it's public and free to use for everyone (sorry, if I'm wrong)

(Merged topics - been wanting to do that for a while now, even if there was only one relevant post. :D )

If you really want to ask, find the user who did the model (I think there's a list somewhere around here), and just PM/email them personally.

There is a credits section in the readme.
