Title: Just played through
Post by: voidSkipper on June 17, 2009, 05:11:17 am
Absolute blast. This is actually the first time I've played through all of the FS1 campaign, despite having the legit FS1 disks (somewhere ): )

Was great fun, very polished. There were a few missions that bugged, but that's probably due to my enormous amount of mods installed.

One question though - after the final mission, it said to hit commit to see the credits. I got a mission with 1st fleet headquarters, etc, but there was no dialogue or anything resembling credits. Did I miss the point there?

The training messages popping up with names were the credits.

I have the same problem.
I never saw any of the training messages (not to mention the Earth had a green box around it).

Actually, the credits were disabled because they were too big for the training message boxes.  We need to redo them.

The green box bug has been fixed in the most recent core VP though.

Shouldn't that fanmade final sequence be turned into a cutscene? :)

No.

:wtf: He's asking whether the credits mission should (in future) be made into a cutscene.

Oh right, don't mind me.

No.

Why? Using show-subtitle would solve the current problems.

oh THAT kind of cutscene. Yeah, I guess that would work, but that's an FSOpen only feature.

The only reason we even have that mission in there is because we can't end on a cutscene, like the main campaign. I'll mess with it in time for 3.2, no worries.

Alright, good and interesting explanation. :) Goober's "No." was a bit vague (I thought he posted that because I pointed out one of his Wiki edits as "semi-act of vandalism" or something like that). :wtf:

Yeah, and you were temp-blocked from the Wiki for it.

His 'No', however, was in reference to the fact that FSPort is already having problems with the cutscene limit, so a prerendered cutscene would be tricky. Or so I surmise. (And Galemp's response addresses the issue of an in-mission cutscene.)

No one temp-blocked him when he pointed my Wiki edits out as "stupid changes I call improvements". That's much more offensive than "semi-act of vandalism". But nothing is wrong for you, isn't it?  Well, let's not derail this thread any further.

So, if I got it right, the FS Port team does not make use of cutscenes to keep compatibility with Retail FreeSpace 2? Although this is a nice and justified choice, it may be the case to progressively switch to FSO in the foreseeable future. Thanks to FSO, in fact, it'd be possible to make use of many interesting features... subtitles are only an example...  ;)

Is there any plan to increase the maximum number of cutscenes? What with VA's upcoming scene and Icey's scene more scenes have to be cut out of the original.

It's being handled successfully, trust me. :)

:wtf: Have you been completely ignoring all the FSO-supported features we use on the Port so far?

1) FS1 music
2) FS1 hud
3) Custom debriefing personas
4) Lightspeed-enhanced backgrounds
5) Galemp-enhanced artwork & models
6) FRED feature for importing missions from FS1
7) FS1-specific ai_profile changes
etc...

As we have said many times in the past, we are not going to drop support for retail FS2.  And as we have said many times in the past, just because we remain compatible doesn't mean we can't use FSO features.

I'm just curious as to why you want retail compatibility. I can't think of a single person who would use Retail instead of FS1 retail.

Selectah is one.  There was also a person asking about it in the tech support forum a few months ago.

Also, note that you can't run ST:R on FS1.

I just finished your FS1 port, and just started Reborn.  Great job on the port.  Looked fantastic, and played flawlessly in every way that matters.  Thanks for making this project available to us.

Last time I played through FS1 was sometime in the late 90s, if I'm not mistaken... it was great to be able to play through it again.

Glad to hear it! That's exactly the kind of reaction I was looking for. :)

Just finished Reborn.  I'm not the most skilled pilot (usually playing on Medium difficulty) but I found several missions incredibly hard.  Reducing the difficulty after 5-6 tries was usually my only recourse.

I think this is in-line with the difficulty of the original expansion, though (maybe a tad bit more difficult than retail?)  That isn't bad, just a comment.

I think it is great you guys brought to this fruition, and thanks again for making it available to the rest of us.  The story is definitely more cohesive than I remember the original being.

Keep up the great work.

People still use retail because shockingly enough, they can't afford or don't have the time for new systems to run FSO on. Which I can respect.

Oi! Galemp and Cobra-enhanced artwork and models. :P

I did some work in time for 3.1 ;)

He did the top-down loadouts for the fighters, with the FS1-style blue lines leading to the weapon hardpoints.

Much appreciated, that was :)

It's actually the subtle things like that that make the "FS1 Immersion Factor" even greater.
