Title: 3.6.10 - cannot play cutscenes
Post by: stef on June 18, 2009, 11:35:33 am
Hey there,

recently I've got back to playing Freespace 2 with the new Open Installer (3.6.10) and the game works fine. I've downloaded the MediaVPs, put them in the correct folder and followed the instructions of toggling with the Open Installer features. And yet the cutscenes still don't play at all.

Now, I'm sure a while ago when the games was still abondonware I followed the same instructions of downloading the cutscenes and putting them in the root folder and the cutscenes worked then. The current copy I have of FS2 is genuine (from GoodOldGames.com).

Is there something I missed or what?

Would appreciate the help, thanks!

I believe you'll need to download the cutscenes in .ogg format and place them in the root folder, just as you did back when it was abandonware. The retail cutscenes are in a different format.

That should solve the issue.

FS2 was never abandonware.

Thanks for the reply. So where do I find them?

The GOG version should have the cutscenes, and they should be .mve. Therefore they should be played by both the retail engine and the FSO engine.

Oggs are available here (http://fszmirror.com/files/FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp). But they'll only work with FSO.

Then its probably my mistake. The cutscenes worked fine before I added FS2 Open. Its been a while since I last checked here and I didn't think the current FS2 would have any effect. Thanks for the links.

The .mve cutscenes should work with FS2_Open.

I believe the .mve cutscenes will no longer work with FSOpen.  Only the .ogg format is supported in 3.6.10.  They will work with 3.6.9.

:wtf: You're questioning kara in a matter like this?

Are the cutscenes switched off in the launcher? Where is that now? Under troubleshooting?  :nervous:

You're confusing .avi and .mve. Support for .avi was removed in 3.6.9 (or earlier possibly. I can't remember but I think it was 3.6.9). Support for .mve was never removed.

I stand corrected.

I had this problem also; apparently 3.6.10 does not 'find' the .mve files in the data2 and data3 folders, where they are installed by the GoG installer.  Playing the GoG retail version works fine; the only issue is that 3.6.10 FSO can't find the files to play the cutscenes.

Copying the .mve files into the root directory of your FS2 installation appears to allow the 3.6.10 FSO find the movie files appropriately; other users can use this as a workaround for the time being.

I'll post this to Mantis.

If the GOG version places the cutscenes to "data2" and "data3" folders by default, it's no wonder the FSO engine doesn't find them. The default location for cutscenes would be \data\movies\ , but indeed the \freespace2\ directory also works.
