Hey, after I updated to Vista x64 SP2 I haven't been able to get the launcher to work. The moment I select an executable for the launcher to use, it freezes.
-
Hmm. Are you trying to run the Launcher with a non-administrator user account?
-
No.
-
That's either a good reason for me a) not to upgrade to SP2 or b) to upgrade to SP2 and help figure out what's wrong.
-
I'm not even sure if it is SP2, that's just what seems most likely.
-
try checking the permissions for the directory its in maybe the upgrade changed them
-
Sooo.... Can anyone else confirm whether or not the launcher isn't working in SP2?
-
I've updated to Vista64 SP2 and have no problems.
-
just a question , where is your freespace directory installed?
-
C:\games\freespace2
Was working fine like 4 months ago, the last time I played FS2. But something between then and now killed it.
-
i know that you have been asked this before , but have you checked the permisions for that folder
also can you take a screen shot of yor folder and post it please

Any particularly drastic actions you've taken between 4 months ago and now?
-
Vista SP2... I guess I could try killing a bunch of background programs...
-
can you take a screen shot of your freespace folder and post the image here just to see if there is anything that looks out of place

Oddly enough, selecting the retail .exe doesn't cause the launcher to hang, just FS2 open...
-
i cant see anything out of place there i would suggest downloading RC3 again and also re downloading the launcher 5.5d to see if either of these are corrupt and just for saftey sake checking that all permissions and the firewall except RC3 im sure we will get to the bottom of this one soon
-
Ok, it looks like the launcher isn't the problem. FS2Open executables are the problem. Launcher works fine with retail .exe, but none of the FS2Open or Fred2Open executables will launch with or without the launcher. I just recently upgraded to windows 7 and they still don't work. Old installs of KSaga and BTRL also don't work. For some reason my computer decided that it hates FS2Open. Tried upgrading to Win7 and it still won't open, compatability mode also doesn't help. No other programs have been affected, just anything the uses the FS2Open executables!
-
I'm on 7 as well, and I do not see the problems you are having. Make sure you use 3.6.10 final (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,64520.msg1271916/topicseen.html#msg1271916), and the Launcher from that thread. Use a debug build, and see if there is a debug log in your data folder.
-
Tried the 3.6.10 debug build, got the following log:

categories can be shown and no debug_filter.cfg info will be saved.

So, it looks like maybe the problem was quite silly and all I need to do is reinstall OpenAL, right?

Yeah, that did it. Yay! Finally can play FS2 again!
-
Nice to hear it.
