You know, FS1. Not to be confused with FSPort.
I'm playing on Medium difficulty, and ... wow, I've never done this well on medium difficulty. I probably have all of the medals there are to get by the point I'm at in the campaign (I'm on the mission where the Lucifer spews out a seemingly unlimited number of Basilisks where I always manage to get the Ace (or, this time through, I'm going for the Double Ace)).
Also, I was flying a Valkyrie, and somehow managed to make the support ship keep up with me (with an ETA to dock of ~1 second) as I went flying off at around top speed. It was funny.
-
Oh yeah, by top speed I meant afterburner speed. Which is 165 m/s.
So now I'm stuck on Black Omega. I finally managed to not lose the transports to the bombers, to take out the Anvil's Weapons subsystem so it couldn't shoot down the bombs, and to shoot down a ton of fighters (after several retries), and what happens? The transport decides the best course to the node is THROUGH the Anvil.
But I've still got more medals than I've ever gotten.

Yay, I just beat it. This is the first time I've beat "Retail" FreeSpace in years.

Just in case you don't know the names, or don't know what the little marks on them mean:
Rank: Commander
Badges:
- Ace
- Double Ace
- Advanced Pilot Wings
Everything else (in reading order):
- Conspicuous Galantry x2
- Vasudan Alliance
- Distinguished Flying Cross x3
- Commendation Medal x2
- Galatea Survivor
- Legion of Merit
- Meritorious Unit x2
- Medal of Honor
- Galactic Service
- Military Defense
- Good Conduct x3
- Distinguished Service Cross
As for how I beat that mission I was stuck on, I put the Ursas in gamma wing, and took out enemy fighters and the two Leo bombers with a fighter. I can't remember which, though; I tried so many times with so many different setups, and I didn't really stop to think about which one was the winner.
Then I got stuck on Clash of the Titans. Well, not stuck, but I wanted to accomplish the secondary objective, so I kept restarting. The final one or two tries I made I ended up using an exploit:
I think I was in a Valkyrie, but it might have been a Hercules... I tried both approaches at least once. I armed myself with Banshee (to take down those pesky fighters and bombers) and Disruptor (to take out the more dangerous of the turrets on the SD Tantalus). Well, though it was unintentional (the first time, anyway), it turns out the combination works nicely for disabling Nephilim. And because I could order my wingmen to ignore the disabled and de-turreted Nephilim, the Tantalus never deployed additional waves. (Of course then I ended up doing it again, because I forgot to take out the Tantalus' engines, and it jumped out with 3 health, denying me the satisfaction of having eliminated it (not that Command cared, though)... whatever)
The final mission (and of course, the one before it) were fairly straight-forward. I flew a Herc, armed with Prometheus in the 4-gun primary bank, and Banshee in the 2-gun primary bank. I would have loaded it with 2x Banshee but the lower energy drain of the Prom made me choose otherwise. Conveniently enough (because I hadn't thought about it in advance), that also was better in the final mission, because then the Banshee's superb damage against shields would have been for naught. Oddly, although I figured remembering to conserve missiles in the previous mission would be important (having noticed that even then there was no support ship available), in the final mission the full of hornets (60) wasn't all that useful... probably because the lack of shields meant a smaller profile for the missiles to hit.
Edit: Holy crap! I just checked on the wiki, and it looks like aside from Triple Ace and the ranks between what I have and Admiral, I got every single medal playing on Medium. Also, I uploaded a shot of the pilot stats listing (stitched together since it wouldn't fit on one page):

Trust me, you don't wanna see my FSPort killcount. (I havent played FS1 in a long time but i agree it was harder)
Then again i've played those campaigns to death.
Command hands out Distinguished flying crosses like candy ( I have 8)

Spot the Difference FS1 / FS2 I count 6

The medals in FS1 look way better than the ones in FS2. Even the BOX looks nicer, in my opinion.

Probably because the FS2 medals are clearly just heavily edited ones from FS1.

Ooh! Ooh! You've also got a triple ace in one, and no triple ace in the other. And in one your rank 3 on the score board and rank 2 in the other. And the eagle wing thingy is moved upwards. In one the ranks move from left to right and the other right to left.
One thing that always irritated me is that the Epsilon Pegasi Liberation or whatever it is (top left corner) doesn't seem to fit. The hole it fits into is the wrong shape.

Getting Lieutenant Commander takes a while. I shiver to think of the effort Admiral will take. Then I can go read a book, or disable my cheats.

Getting Lieutenant Commander takes a while.
In FS1 I go from ensign to Lt. Commander in a single campaign on medium diff. (i get Lt. Commander often when destroying the SD Tantalus just before the end of the campaign)
In FS2 I get to Lt. By the end of the campaign and Lt. Commander usually is obtained on my 2nd go when destroying the Ravana.
Not that hard...

SC Cain: 1
SD Demon: 1
I gotta love how they order things on the stats table :pimp:

That's just the order in the Tables.

You might notice I didn't get the kill for the Anvil (PVD Typhon). Even though it went down, I chose to fly a fighter for that mission so I could keep the bombers and transports safe, instead of trying to do it myself. Although having a Banshee turret was nice.
