I'm finding it kinda hard to make out the details on the carrier. Perhaps you could render it with the wireframe still on?

Post by: Reprobator on June 30, 2009, 04:41:55 am
what program are you modelling with?
Under 3dsmax to see  the detail better you can place a skylight and enable the lighttracer ;)

Moonred's using Wings3D.

Anyway, good job. I love that Fleet carrier   You should seriously think of joining The Apocalypse Project, I think your style of modelling will perfectly fit Hiigaran space navy ;7

Moonred is some kind of Wings master ;7
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop
Post by: Axem on June 30, 2009, 09:54:14 am
The artist is more important than the program. :p

(<-uses Wings3D also)

Nice stuff btw. :) To get the Corporation Cruiser looking a bit better, select it in object mode and auto smooth it to around 30 degrees. Makes it look a lot sharper.

Title: Re: Moonred Workshop

They need pipes!

And better auto-smooth.  :nervous:
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop
Post by: Moonred on June 30, 2009, 06:28:05 pm
Im using AO plug in and thas why smoothing isn't good.
Also..for what they need pipes?
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop
Post by: Axem on June 30, 2009, 06:56:18 pm
Pipes are just another greeble that can add some nice detail. I wouldn't use anything over 8 sides if you want to try it.

And that AO shader hurts the model more than it helps IMO. The shots all look a bit out of focus.

I'd look into exploring Blender a bit to get some nicer AO shots. I use 3ds Max for solely making skylight renders of my ships. Quite a waste for a multi-grand program. :p
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop
Post by: Flipside on June 30, 2009, 07:09:33 pm
Heh, I use Vue D'Esprit, which is an odd use of a program designed mostly for landscapes, but it does have some absolutely awesome lighting routines.

Found out the other days, a load of the backgrounds in PotC were done in Vue, though, admittedly, a significantly more expensive version than mine ;)

As for the models, very nice indeed, looking good.

Forgive my ignorance, but are these from any existing sci-fi source, or are you just making them from complete scratch.  One of those could be a Deimos successor.

All of my ships are made from cube. After puting cube in wings im just modeling until things looks better >_<

Great job Moon!

I had to try one of them out so I converted it but I couldn't get a texture to stick?
I usually just throw a temp over the whole model for testing.

Anyway it works fine in game. here's a pic of the model in POF format...

WE WANTZ MOAR PLZ!!!

P.S.  Why two Moons?  Moon Moon Industries? Does your corporation have facilities on two Moons, owned by two brothers named Moon? :)

pps: You just posted some more cool models while I was typing:  It looks like you already have a "temp" texture on them? Does it loose the texture association when you made the file into a 3DS?

ppps:   (Last one I promise!)  Would you mind if I posted two of your designs on the Clancy Earth vs Battletech story thread?

They look like something Earth could build once they get their hands on some IS tech.
The Kiwis captured a Stinger and a Hunchback from a pirate dropship. They know it's a high probability that the pirates are coming back in a year or so... Hehe.

Ok, that last one was funny.

Well I was wondering about Red Moon Industries but i prefer it to sounds chinese like (not at all, but still >_<)
(just lookat my shipyards logo)

Also Im just simple newbe 3D grahic artist (lulz artist, its sound fnny in my case) and I finding a lot of joy in modeling. Im not conversant with texturing and uv maping (but Im trying a little <but my friends in rl always want to waste all my efforts and they kindnapping me for beer and other kinds of alcohol>

So those models are without uv maps :< Sorry beacouse of my ignorance.
But i believe that some1 will make it until I learn to do it by myself.

Probably I'll add 2day 2 more ships >_<

No Problem.

ATM the server is either super busy or it's just down...

It's teh spoacebattles.com site (creative writing section) where we keep the fanfics.

It's the Tom Clancy universe with jack Ryan as President.

There are two threads. One is the discussion thread where ideas are pitched and test posts made (it;a in the style of a round-robin, all can participate). It's also where people debate, I mean ARGUE about RL vs batle tech physics and damage and tanks v mechs ect. lol!!!

The second thread is STORY ONLY, no comments. Once ideas are refined and relatively agreeed upon the new post is made.

I'll link you directly to them shortly soon as I can get back onto the site.

I wanted to do that kind of big turret style as well
but then I ran into the 'barrels must face 90 degrees up' thing of freespace and it didn't looked that well...  :(
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: Dragon on July 17, 2009, 06:53:51 pm
This can be corrected easly with animation code.
Look into mediavps for an exapmle.
Entire correction takes place at table level though, so barrels on model still have to point upwards.
Change is only visible in mission (not in lab).
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: Getter Robo G on July 17, 2009, 07:17:31 pm
That looks dangerously close to anime-style...

 :D

Should I rouse the troops and lets fight?

Anyway, one thing to keep in mind Moon, the rninges look GREAT on the Jotun Concept, BUT we can't edit the engine exhaust flames easily. Whoever is going to convert the model will have to make custom glows for each shape that isn't symetrical space friendly.

Not saying you should compromise the model, but an alternate version might be a good idea for those not totally dedicated for exactness.

I tried making custom thruster cones once and for some odd reason they came out "wonky". All I did was edit existing ones...
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: Moonred on July 17, 2009, 07:24:17 pm
I made the barrels ended with sphere (so If I find good texture it will look good) so even if it will poing 90 degrees it will not be so weird looking ^^

Another ship under production. MMI is working 24h/7 to find good clients ^^

Getter I lost Jotun model, so I'll make conversion friendly one :)

Also I love anime style + WWII battleships like Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Yamato etc.
As long as It will look good, nothing happen? >_<

I find great looking shipf from an old anime: Yamato - Bolar Federation
Im changing shapes, editing it with paint/gimp to make them  custom (also Im never making copies, and changing many things :D)

I don't like it. It's basically a rectangle with a ton of extrusions, which is bland and uninteresting.

So far, the only ship that I have really liked in this thread is the dropship/gunship. Could you post a download link to it if you haven't already?

I don't like it. It's basically a rectangle with a ton of extrusions, which is bland and uninteresting.

So far, the only ship that I have really liked in this thread is the dropship/gunship. Could you post a download link to it if you haven't already?

Well..to be honest, military objects rly do not have to be great, or designed by ferrari designers =.=
Their main task is complete the role for what theye have  been build

also i'll post links for them soon

Could you post links with future pics or simply update your page 1 post?  :D

That way people don't have to sort through pages and pages of posts... But it means you need to keep your page book marked for yourself, cause our search function has been BONKED for years...

:drevil: I'm not gonna say it, But I wonder (Did Goober break it? Sorry Goob, couldn't help myself.)

Ehh... I can't have exclusive models in my mod? Boreas is made for SG, so it will appear at first in SG on the same policy as other mods using their models. You can use our models, when we release SG. I don't see the problem. This is nothing new.

BTW. If I spoke differently, that's fault of my english. Sorry.
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: General Battuta on October 26, 2010, 11:44:49 am
Well, what I think we've been pushing for is open release of finished models as soon as they're polished up and ready to go. BP for instance traded its UEF capships to other projects well before release and handed out some optimized stuff too. It just helps everyone do better.

I don't necessarily think exclusive stuff is always inappropriate, but I think it's less important than people have made it out to be in the past. Good use of a ship is far more important than first use; look at the StratComm ships, or Axem's use of the Ravana.
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: Thaeris on October 26, 2010, 12:24:30 pm
I'm going to stick with Betrayal in this issue. "Exclusive" ships are not just geometry within a .pof, but they're often key storytelling elements within a campaign that, as a whole, needs a specific ship-set to capture the feeling of the narrative. And although I'll agree that in most instances a ship should be open for general use after the campaign is released, I wholly stand behind an author who has commissioned a ship design for use in his or her mod and wants to hold onto the model until the release of the given work.

Of course, that's for purpose-built ships. A general model-dump is a different affair, and the author certainly wasn't concerned about appeasing any one writer or modder. But again, it's up to the model creators and comissioners what happens to their assets, and it's their duty to be responsible with them should their campaigns fall short of completion.
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: General Battuta on October 26, 2010, 12:30:30 pm
There aren't two clearcut sides to this issue, and I don't want anyone lining up into camps. In general, though, we see a pattern: campaigns that build up exclusive assets fail. Modeldumps enable brilliant new campaigns that succeed.

I think exclusive assets have their place, especially when they're key story elements, but when they're not, they should be made available for the public good as rapidly as possible. We're all in this together as a community, and with the exception of TBP and Wings of Dawn, no 'large exclusives pool' campaign has ever made it to release in the HTL era (and neither of those use HTL models, for the most part). When some of them finally do, we can judge the impact, but I doubt the benefits will be worth the opportunity cost.

Modelers should strive to get their work released, polished, and open to the community as rapidly as possible unless it is an absolutely indispensable storytelling element. Good use of a ship is far more important than first use, and public releases allow every single campaign project everywhere, including those by newcomers, to succeed.

This is why we have banks IRL instead of stuffing our money under mattresses. Money in a bank gets passed around and helps everybody out. It's capitalism at work!

EDIT: If model exclusivity was important for storytelling, there would be a correlation between model exclusivity and the perceived quality of a campaign. Yet of the community classics - Derelict, Transcend, BP, The Procyon Insurgency, Derelict, Wings of Dawn, Silent Threat Reborn, Vassago's Dirge - only one of them uses exclusive models in any meaningful sense. They don't seem to be necessary.
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: General Battuta on October 26, 2010, 12:40:47 pm
And to clarify, I don't think there needs to be any kind of witchhunt directed at projects with exclusive assets. But when weighing your options, consider the benefit to the community as a whole of going public; consider how many great campaigns we've been able to play because of modelers who shared.

I understand both sides here, but ultimately I don't think the large exclusive pile strategy has - so far - ever paid off. Just something to think about.
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: Nyctaeus on October 26, 2010, 01:18:20 pm
Tell that to members and leaders of big mods. They will never release their stuff before release of main project, because it makes their mod more interesting and valuable. I understand both sides too - other mods have a lot of great stuff I want, but I also undestand other modmakers - they simply wants to make their mods unique, as me. So... I can wait.

I didn't speak I won't respond for individual request. If someone wants and has a strong reasons, I will be open for requests and deals like others who made similar deals, but I won't release all stuff without campaign and whole modpack.
Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download
Post by: General Battuta on October 26, 2010, 01:27:46 pm
I think that's fair.

Putting the rest of this post in spoiler tags because it's tangential, and I don't think it's that important. Just ruminations.

Spoiler:
I know that projects like Inferno, BWO, Twisted Infinities, and others have large caches of exclusive models, and I know their leaders are reluctant to open those up. I respect that. BlackWolf has made it clear why he doesn't want to do that. At the same time, though, the community's current vivacity and liveliness is in large part due to people like StratComm and the earlier Inferno team doing public releases which gave smaller mods stuff to work with. INFR1's Ancients made BP and PI possible, for instance.

Amazing things could happen if the community at large could collaborate on all those locked-up models.

And I don't think having 'unique models' necessarily makes a project more interesting or more valuable. I think it's interesting mission design and story that does that. All the mods I listed above became classics because they had such good stories and missions. INFR1 hasn't stood the test of time quite as well, despite all that I like about it.

Eyecandy looks great in trailers and screenshots, but when you're actually playing the thing it's how it plays that matters, and the shininess of the assets wears off pretty quick after that first glance.

I think there's a lesson there.

Title: Re: Moonred Workshop. Gallery and 3ds. files download

Storyline, FREDing and mod feelings are important things for me. Shadow Genesis has a unique storylie, but that's not everything. Good graphics unified with unique story builds atmosphere... That's the most important for me. Of course storyline is more important than graphics, but good mod should meld both things.

Hmm... Ok. I understood your point of view. That was a lesson. Maybe I will do a suprise for community in the future :).

The King is dead. Long live the King!
Mkay. My pc almost died. More than half of my HD is dead so all models except hosted or sent to my friend.
That critical failure was more or less predictable cuz some parts of my pc are 7-8 years old.

Good thing is that I have new power supply and new graphic card cooler (old one was able to fly away, but its power supply cable forced it to hang on it <I was almost sure that It gonna be the end or long term retirement from modeling "career">) So I have new cooler sticked to it with 4 plastic stripes and a lot of ideas for new ships.

So well.. I have to redo most of my models. actualy its a good thing cuz they gonna have much better quality, more polys and stuff. And I've changed a lil style of cap ships for SSS.
Right now Im rendering MMI Battleship "Predator". There are going to be 2 versions of it. Current one (after finishing all parts of it (actualy model is divided into 3 pieces) and second one with heavy beam on its front.

Im gonna update this post as soon as my pc render battleship.

We even don't have any finished models [only the one old model, but it even isn't final yet], so we don't need this kind of help now. And... I'm good tabeler :). Maybe we will need some help with textures in the future, I know you're good with makeing shine and normal maps :).

That Saviour battleship looks amazing, really. Its design is awesome... is that on the front a huge weapon of some sort?

I vote someone puts the Saviour in-game and releases for the masses.

the ship looks nice.
Can't see anything on the second pic, way too dark and my old crt can't handle that.

Also, please, use lvlshot tags.

Replace [img*]whatever[/img*] with [lvlshot*]whatever[/lvlshot*], without the asteriks (*).

Unfortunately, at this moment it's impossible. Moonred needs money, so he sold this model to some game artist. We can finish this model after 2 years, when rights to model back to Moon.

Are you serious about that? Moonred actually sold the model and you will not be able to work on it for two years?

Ehhh... Yes :(. I don't know the details, but if that guy send that model back, it will be fully uvmapped. From this point, finishing is very easy. If you want, ask Moonred for details.

Are all these new vessels going to show up in SSS?

Most of them. Some of them will be in SG [but probably not in first release]. All weird ships with wings and other things what don't fit to FS standards will appear in SSS on in the animation movie.

Jeeez. I have to finish some badass hc for my boss in style much different than what I ussualy do.
Here is an example of its (mine model) smaller brother:
(Lrn2lvlshot - Zacam)

So well. I have time to finish it untill end of march. (Yay, first deadline ever)
Sad thing is that I will not be able to share full img of its after finishing it.

anyway If You got some nice low poly ships You want me to convert into htl Im open for suggestions.
The only thing I require is link to .3ds model on some hosting site like media fire or something simmilar.
I cant promise I'll convert every model posted here but there is a chance I'll do it in not so far future.

About SSS
I done some basic sketches of pirates faction Im gonna model soon.
There is ****load of things I have to do about SSS but well... I simply do not have time to finish it.

About mods im in.
Atm Im involved in several projects and to be honest Im acting as asshole to projects leaders for being absent/ ignoring them.
So I want to say sorry. Im trying to get enough time to respond to everyone but well. Girlfriend/Vigilance Rpoject/SSS/Learning 3d soft/Rl life.
Kinda bussy..eh.

Amazing to have you back, Moonred.  The Inferno Team needs the following ships HTLed:

1. GTCv Phobos (utmost top priority)
2. The Sol Gate (second priority)

Since you already volunteered for us w/ sexy results, we will send you a PM and a link to the Phobos' 3DS mesh soon.  Thanks much in advance!

I cant name that job a nice one. Lost about 8kg/ 17 lbs of my weight and I wasnt fat =.=. Sleeping about 4hours and working 8 to 16h/day was kinda tiring. Plus got small varicose vein on my right leg. So i don't think im Idiot. I was one of the longest working there cuz most op people quit after 2-3 months. So as long as I don't have to work to feed my famili I prefer to find something... more healthy =.=

Also my abbilities do not allow me to be freelancer ;).
