I have an idea for a new ship classification- in fact, I haven't seen anything like it anywhere, and I don't even know what to call it. Nevertheless, I will attempt to explain the basics now, and follow up with more as it comes to me.
As you all know, fighters can fly inside shields. Now, what happens if you create a unit(with a model of, say, a Terran Navbuoy) and give it a BIG shield. Not a super-strong shield, but a big one- maybe 400-600 meters wide. Fighters could fly in and out at will, and could fire their weapons from inside out...but not outside in.
If this works, it could add a whole new element to the game. If the GTVA wants to give fighters the ability to defend a very localized region of space, or even just to protect a few cargo containers, they could deploy one of these. It would be sort of like a bunker or foxhole, providing cover to those inside. The shield could be beaten down without too much effort, but the time that would take would allow the fighters inside a considerable advantage. Or, the outside fighters could just fly inside.

Sort of a mobile shield generator? Could be useful to protect valuable cargo. Could have a shield generator subsystem which disables the shields if destroyed. This should be easy to do.

Yes, I think that's a cool idea, but maybe if you could add a translucid sphere of the the size as the shield so we can see it, that sould be nice... (making it as a thruster flame subobject maybe?)

What I would like to see is that only the good guys could get in the shield. But everything else would stay the same.

Yes, something like from Phantom Menace, but big enough to hold only three or four ships comfortably, maybe a half dozen if they squeeze. Something that could be defended or assaulted, and either side could potentially capture for their own use.

If you made a mobile version (#cough#field frigate#cough#) you could use it as a kind of convoy escort- it would basically mean that all those long ranged shots taken by the attackers wouldn't hit... until the shield runs out. All depends on how close the ships inside are to the edge of the field...

You don't see very much, since the field is invisible. The ship itself is a Taiidan frigate hull with a big field generator fitted at the front. The ship has absolutely no weapons.

Why couldn't you put a shield like this on a fully armed capship? Even if it didn't keep fighters from firing at close range, It would protect against enemy beam fire and long-range bomb volleys. You might not be able to make one big enough for a hecate, but an Aeolus with shields like this would be a damn tough nut.

The task of this ship is to protect other ships within it's field. It can hold two frigates within it. Also this is no energy shield but a powerful EM field that deflects the mass driver bullets used in the Homeworld universe. The field needs that much energy that nothing is left for weapons.

Anyway, I think the beams are not stopped by shields, if my memory serves me well... And if they did, would the whole thing be fun?

This is just the POFs. You'll have to make your own tables. I've included the Meson Shield generator. It's a Meson bomb with a smaller shield. Designed to create a safe route for the evacuation of SOL. If 1 is destroyed, the convoy, its escort, and the other generators go with it. Works quite well, so far I haven't lost them in mission. (I increased its HP to about the strength of a cruiser)
