Post by: TESLA on July 02, 2009, 12:25:39 pm
As seen on another thread, Empire magazine has published their top 100 games of all time.

Personally i think its a load of ****e!

Missing Half-Life in its Top 10 and System shock!

But anyhow,

observe.

Discuss.

Yeah, it's a pretty silly list.   Bioshock instead of System Shock? And I am seriously missing some other titles too.

The picture they have for Homeworld at #83 is actually from HW2.  How they missed that big huge Vaygr "V" on the carrier I have no idea.

WoW is not the third-best game of all time.  They are obviously smoking something over there.  And Wing Commander 3 or 4 need to be up there somewhere as well.  How can a game with FMV cutscenes, excellent space combat, and an engaging story not be in the Top 100?

If their choice for #2 is anything to go by, then I think it's more that they're being paid than that they genuinely believe that WoW is that good of a game.

Yeah... uhm...

I noticed a lot of FPSs were there. They made up like half the frikkin list.

And then nostalgia seemed to play a big part. It shouldn't. I'm fine with old games, as long as they're solid.

It's was always going to be subjective. Get over it. Nice to see FS2 get a mention though.

The game's modding community, which is still going strong ten years later. Among the user-generated goodies are an HD texture pack to update the game for modern machines and the standout: Beyond the Red Line, a Battlestar Galactica mod that is everything you could possibly want form a BSG game and entirely free. If you still have FS2 then be sure to pick it up.

I mean really, is there anything more to say?

One Sonic game when there's like 13 or 14 Mario/Metroid/Zelda games on the list and they put the first one? Instead of Sonic 2? Or Sonic 3?

I also find it strange how Super Mario World makes the top spot instead of the original Super Mario Bros., or even SMB3.

SMW is what ProtonJonSA plays romhacks on. You can't not like his videos.

I need the name of their supplier.

Notice how they actually use the term 'JRPG' (#2), as well.

So they use a term for a certain subset of role-playing games...to accurately refer to a member of that certain subset of role-playing games?

Their top 10 is thoroughly underwhelming.  A lot of their choices appear to be based on fanboy picks rather than any sort of objective criteria.  Honestly, COD4 ranks above titles like Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Oblivion?  Really?  Did Rainbow Six, the game that spawned all its clones (including Counter-Strike and the COD franchise) even make the list?

Sad.

Also, 6/10 in the Top 10 are console-only games.  W.T.F.

From what I could garner from one or two of the write-ups, it almost sounds like at least part of the input on the list came from user votes, which would explain the fanboy-ish slant on many of the choices.

And why is it so odd that so many console-only games are in the top 10? Considering that they probably greatly outnumber the PC-only field over the grand scheme of things (discounting Flash games, obviously), and that the majority of the most popular and well-known game series appeared on consoles, I wouldn't expect things to be any different.  There are probably a whole ton of "hardcore" gamers (including myself) who know nothing about a title like Sins of a Solar Empire, yet everyone and their mother has heard of the likes of Mario, Zelda, and Final Fantasy.  I'm someone who does actually play PC games, and yet the majority of titles I've played over my life were console-exclusive ones.  It's just the way things work.

To be fair to the editors, BtRL's site doesn't mention the game is standalone.

Actually, it does.

The Beyond the Red Line demo is a stand-alone conversion of Freespace 2. A test run; an experimental release; you know, just a demo.

Oops, must have missed that. My bad.

Thing is though, you have to spell it out with big friendly letters all over the site. We did so in the early days of BtRL and still countless people managed to miss it and thought the game required FS2 to play.

That's why we don't refer to Diaspora as a mod in any official PR stuff we put out or even mention FS2. Once people hear the name of the game they assume you need it.

I suspect that even big name TCs like those based on Quake 3 still have this problem. :p

I see that THING too often on Yahoo Answers. Please tell me that isn't you...
On a side note, once I got excited because I saw FS2 in a Harvey Norman store in 2003; I forgot if they had FS1.
