Title: Big Shadows of Lylat update! (Trailer 2, new website)
Post by: DaBrain on July 02, 2009, 04:36:51 pm
We've been secretly working on some pretty nice stuff for Shadows of Lylat.

It has been quite a while since we released the first trailer, so it was about time release another one.

In this trailer you'll see a shot of the starmap, which you will see before you start a mission, as well as some new ice landscape shots.

Download  AVI (720p xvid) (http://www.shadowsoflylat.net/media/video/trailer2_ice_xvid.avi)
or
Watch on Youtube (720p) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFnSvromImU&hd=1)
(watch in fullscreen to get real HD)

Our new hompage is up as well! It's still a bit empty, but we'll start adding some more content soon.

...maybe this the right point to mention that we're still looking for coders, scripters and at least one good sound engineer. ;)

Was Nuke involved with the landscaping?

Put simply, ****. In a good way. :D

Doesn't seem possible in FS, as Battuta said.

Those screensots are just amazing.
I never played any Starfox games, so I don't think I can help you, but I'm waiting for SOL just because of those models (that's the best landscape I ever seen in FS).

Was Nuke involved with the landscaping?

No, Nuke isn't part of our team. However, his scripting knowledge alone would be enough reason to let him join instantly, if he's interested.

The landscapes were created by me. Water fixed up some very nasty problems with the ice landscape.

Thanks to the corridor mode missions, we're able to build some fairly complex landscapes without too many problems. ;)

Are you a time traveler?

Well, the engine may have some limitations, but once you know what can't be done, you can find some ways around the limitations and get do what you want anyway.  Actually, thanks to the long development time and the number of coders, from all over the world, the engine has a lot of smaller, but pretty interesting features. I.e. what you might not even have noticed. We've used animated normal maps for the water.

We've been sharing some ideas with Diaspora. And the Diaspora coders worked on some features which SoL will use as well.
Nothing of that can be seen in this trailer, but you should expect to see some interesting things in the next trailers of these these two projects. :)

LOL it is highly probable that SoL will be the best Star Fox game EVER, and it's not even a licenced game, and it constitutes copyright infringement XD

Just think of it as a huge ass fanfic!!!  :pimp: besides, they are not making money out of it.

AMAZING! it's better than anything SoL related i have seen before /me bows and then goes away to save up for a new computer to be able to run all that

we should get the OverClocked Remix guys to assist in doing that, they did some really great remixes of the original SNES and N64 music.

My computer just shuddered in the fear that she will have to run this game sooner or later. Just... How high are the system requirements going to be?
Title: Re: Big Shadows of Lylat update! (Trailer 2, new website)
Post by: DaBrain on July 03, 2009, 10:14:48 am
The system requirements will be slightly above what you need to play FS2_Open at the best visual quality.

We'll also release a high-def package, with some very high-res textures (up to 4096²) for people with high-end machines.
The standard version is better optimized though and will only look slightly worse. All shots from the trailer were made without the high-def content.

If Nintendo wants us to, we'll stop the project.

However, so far we didn't receive anything from them. Dylan Cuthbert suggested that it should be fine, unless we tried to make money with it, as it will be considered to be fan-art.
Despite some people thinking otherwise, Nintendo doesn't have a history closing fan projects.

Post by: Infamus on July 03, 2009, 03:17:28 pm
Wow, I'd always thought it would work.

Oh i have an idea for the charged laser, use a custom tag to fire a 3 shot burst and then another to switch to an entirely different weapon that is a instant lock aspect seeker and then it will switch back upon release
and for the megabombs, when the laser is charged the megabombs will switch to an entirely different weapon which has the same aspect homing status as the charged laser and upon firing the charged laser shot will just cancel ;7

I hope that it works for you and doesn't cause any parsing errors.  oh can you give us a test map? like the SF64 training mission with all of the usable ships and usable weaponry including the wolfen

Uh. You really might want to get the team's permission...just in case. Unless you're on the team, in which case I apologize! Hard to tell.

Not that I think it's necessarily a bad idea, just for safety's sake with the cease-and-desist risk and all.

im not on the team, but as the video is now on youtube, i doubt it'd do much more damage to add it to gamespot.  its not uploaded yet, i'll keep on hold for an auth...

Done.

I have posted it on three separate places.

Gamespot
(the video was compressed down to standard size, they don't have hd for user videos)
http://www.gamespot.com/snes/action/starfox/video_player.html?id=KnVmwzT75bIKvDDf  It is currently in the "most recent" list of user videos so it should generate some views.

Megavideo
(that one is in HD, you just have to tolerate the popup ad...)
http://megavideo.com/?v=EL9J3KY9

Veoh
(did not come out in hd but is of better quality than gamespot's horrid quality.  and unlike gamespot it can be fullscreened)
http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/entertainment/watch/v18718353B2JpRDaM

Well if this doesn't give some publicity to the campaign, I don't know what will

EDIT: corrected typos

Looks really good - but you got waaaay too much specular on the mapping. Can you simmer it down otherwise all the planets will look like they have been glassed.

Ok, time to answer some questions.

Are there going to be ground missions and units too?

A few missions will take place on planets, but you won't leave our Arwing.
If we can do it, there might be a mission in the Landmaster, but right now that's not very likely.

There will be AI ground units though.

SWEEEEEEEET!
Question:  Is that shot in the begining with all the planets actually in game?

No, the pan in the beginning is pure prerendered CG.
However, I plan to render sequences like this before each mission. Either as fullscreen videos, or simply as small clips in the briefing.

Looks really good - but you got waaaay too much specular on the mapping. Can you simmer it down otherwise all the planets will look like they have been glassed.

The planets are supposed to look stylized.

I've only played Star Fox 64 and the original on an emulator.

But on 64 I unlocked Advanced mode, unlocked characters for versus, and got all but a couple of medals in Advanced mode. I think the ones I never got were Solar, Titania, and probably Sector Z. But I haven't played in ages, so I don't think I'd be anywhere near as good as I was that one summer when I did all of that. I think my high score is in the 1300's.

I'm actually worried the cartridge may die, because it takes several tries to get it to start properly.  :(

Hmm, My high score was 1876 (i still have the cardridge ;)  ), I had all the medals in expert mode, and remain undefeated in the multiplayer after hundreds of matches.

StarFox 64 was in my opinion the best arcade space shooter there ever was.

The only thing I never figured out how to do was how to score 277 hits on Venom(I managed 228 by blowing up Andross's two eyes simultaneously with a Nova Bomb)...Even Nintendo Game Counsellors didn't know, but I saw a screenshot of that score in Nintendo Power Magazine eons ago which means it can be done in a legit manner (but I still can't figure it out)
