Title: Piloting Destroyers, Cruisers, Corvettes
Post by: jkalltheway on July 04, 2009, 04:40:02 pm
Are there any updates on the modding that allowed players to pilot capital ships? I remember there being someone attempting something along those lines.

There was also this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,62521.0.html) a while back.

I have pretty much finished it, the features I requested would increase comfort, but are not nessesary.
If you want some specific cap ship made flyable, just tell me, I can make a mod which allows it.
(list of three keys that you nearly never use would be also helpful, as I need them for turret controlling)

I was thinking, someone COULD technically remake the FS2 campaign with the player controlling one of the larger ships instead...

Yeah but it would suck without proper coding and such.

not sure about FS2 but it would be cool to command the GTC Orff or the GTD Galatea

FS in general. Given enough time and commitment, i could see BOTH campaigns being converted/

That would strain credibility pretty awfully. How would you play 99% of the retail FS2 missions in a capital ship? God, imagine asteroid field missions!

A custom campaign would be a better idea.

I guess it could. but well given that the game is balanced for a Fighter styled gameplay, if we unbalanced it for the sake of big ships, it could work. Maybe.

That would be some pretty heavy unbalancing. Doing a capship campaign from scratch would probably be best.

Maybe you will say I play Silent Hunter (yes, the original one from 1996 :) ) too much, but I was thinking about a campaign involving fast warships with ability to cloak, armed with heavy weapons able to bring down much bigger ship with a few hits. (you may also say "too much Silent Hunter and Wing Commander"  after reading this :) )
It will be certainly non-FS style campaign, but also a huge innovation, I'm nearly sure no one did something like that before, so it will be one of a kind campaign. (at least at the time of it's creation)

I'm gonna need to fudge around in FS and figure out how to create a campaign.

Uh... why not look it up on the wiki? (or just look at the bottom of the editors menu in fred)

I could go for a flyable Aeolus and Deimos, and maybe even Iceni.  I dont use the number keys (above qwerty) other than the ones mapped for MP chat stuff.

I've experimented with flying these ships already, but with no turret control of any kind, so I felt more like the navigator than the captain...  It was still cool, but i would have loved to have been able to order my beams to blast a particular ship, or order my flak guns to shoot some bombers, and my blobs to shoot the bombs.

Two reasons, Laziness, and nubbiness

Reasons are not reasons if they are irrational, and excuses are not excuses if they do not excuse anything.  :P

Laziness, prevents me from doing productive things. My nubbiness also makes me apprehensive to start being productive. Added together, they are rational. Also, this may excuse me from any blame for my own lack of action in FRED. However, my laziness does not prevent me from wiki-ing. Which i will do very soon (procrastination). You got me at the excuses one.  ;7

I think it would be best for someone to do a non FS related campaign possibly in a carrier command style? and then learn the lessons from that to work on a FS based campaign following a ship either that we know survived several battles so would be doing a this is what that ship was up to or just make up say a SOC type ship that works alongside but independent of the nebular task force for FS2 or sneaks behind shivan lines in FS1
