Title: Stuttering: is this a graphics issue?
Post by: Higher Game on July 04, 2009, 09:47:41 pm
I use an 8600 GT (plan to upgrade in a year or so) and it shouldn't be choppy at all. Old drivers, but I think that's a plus with this project. I did see a Youtube video with a similar looking issue though.

"GLSL minute asset loading related twitching" is blamed. What does this mean in English? Would reducing anti-aliasing, upgrading, changing resolution, etc fix the problem? Or would I have to do no_glsl (I have no idea how though) and live with bad textures? Will the final release of this version fix it?

Not necessarily.

Launcher -> Features -> "Troubleshoot" list type -> Disable GLSL (shader) support. It won't make your textures bad. Your textures remain. You just won't get normal maps that make things a dash bit prettier.

I'm using the most recent 186 drivers, and haven't had any problems with FSO (so far, fingers crossed, etc)

probably going to get this wrong but you can use the   -no_vsync    and this will gain you a few fps as for the drivers update them is probably the best idea, this is an old game but with all the improvements it is actually quite gpu hungry...

if all else fails using the disable glsl will help

I had stuttering when I was running 3_6_9, it would run fine but at random intervals it would just drop 30-40 frames for no apparant reason.
it never showed up in recent 3_6_10 builds.
though I doubt this is your problem

Other specs?

E6600 Intel dual core, 2 gigs of RAM, 400 Gb hard drive, Windows XP. Runs just about everything perfectly.

I'll mess with the drivers sometime I guess. To those with no problems, what drivers do you use?

Not sure about the latest drivers, but that card on that computer should be running FSO perfectly well on XP.

I used the 162.18 driver... or rather somewhere within the 162 revision IIRC, but I might be wrong and my hardware's dead so I can't check the exact version. Didn't get around to updating after that. The last time I attempted to update it was during the heyday of the buggy 169 driver and since then I didn't touch my drivers.

Though I should point out that I'm less concerned about gfx quality and more on whether the game can run with a stable fps at all (although some fancy effects is nice).
