Title: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 04:30:38 pm
I'm having trouble with Turey's FSO Installer, it keeps telling me a file is corrupted when I go to unzip it using WinRAR - then the .exe will not launch, though it appears in the ctrl-alt-del program manager under processes, but not in running programs.

Also, the New mediavps (all in one file) in the FSO Upgrade post keeps claiming corruption too. I'm trying them separately now...

My need for an upgrade started when some freighters in the FSPort-mediavps campaign running on 3.6.10 (I think it was experimental on that build) decided to go ghostly - I could fire through them without damaging them (primary and secondary had no effect, though rockets would impact) and the model would blink in and out with the engine flares remaining.

I'm trying to do thinks one at a time manually, (RC3, new mediavps), but there's got to be a better way to fix this. Any suggestions?

Yes. Don't use the installer. Download everything manually. And make sure you follow the installation instructions to the letter.

FSPort 3.1.1: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58357.0.html
FSPort MediaVPs: Same location.
MediaVPs: Better download the separate VP packages. Do it from here. http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html

As for the problem you've described...Haven't seen that one yet. See if a manual download will fix it.

Much appreciated...waiting on downloads now.

Drat, still more unpacking errors:

!   C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\MV_Effects.7z: CRC failed in MV_Effects.vp. The file is corrupt
!   C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\MV_Effects.7z: Error - operation failed
!   C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\mv_music.zip: CRC failed in mv_music.vp. The file is corrupt
!   C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\MV_Advanced.7z: CRC failed in MV_Advanced.vp. The file is corrupt
!   C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\MV_Advanced.7z: Error - operation failed
!   C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\MV_Assets.7z: CRC failed in MV_Assets.vp. The file is corrupt

Any way to get around this? Or is there a way to fix the new installer and wipe from the beginning?

Damn. You're having a tough day with downloads!

Try manual download from the MediaVPs release thread, but pick a different source from whatever you selected last time. Make sure to delete all the corrupt files you downloaded, too.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: The E on July 06, 2009, 05:02:21 pm
Do. Not. Use. The. Installer.

Delete all the temporary files the Installer created.
Delete your fsport, fsportmediavps and mediavps directories. Redownload.

When downloading, do not use download accelerators.
When unzipping, use 7zip or winRAR.

*Sigh*
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 05:05:01 pm
Well, the installer won't unpack either, so don't worry about me trying that again. I was going to install it in another directory for a second install, so it wouldn't interfere with the first. This is becoming a mess! I'll try wiping all the new stuff, restarting, and downloading from elsewhere.

A list of what you need:

FreeSpace Open 3.6.10RC3, in my signature.
Launcher 5.5d, in my sig.
MediaVPs 3.6.10, in the FSU forum.

That's the base model plus graphics. Download those, don't unpack them, and do a fresh install of FS2. Tell us when you're done.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 05:16:01 pm
Those are everything I'm grabbing, and having trouble unpacking. As for the fresh install, how do I go about that? Turey's installer won't unpack (only one I've found is hosted at his site) and that's the only way I've ever installed it...
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: General Battuta on July 06, 2009, 05:17:39 pm
AGHAGHAGH.

Do not delete Freespace 2 retail files. Turey's Installer no longer installs retail FS2. You need to buy it off GoodOldGames for $6 these days. But if you've already got a copy from the old free days, that's fine - just don't delete it!

I can't believe this. It's not possible to download an uncorrupted file. This is getting no where.
Title: Re: Installation problems

What do you unpack them with? Maybe you have a virus.

I can't believe this. It's not possible to download an uncorrupted file. This is getting no where.

If you've tried all the different download links in the MediaVPs release thread (please confirm you are there, and not using the installer) then the problem is on your end. What are the filesizes of the files you're trying to unpack?

Just tried out the Turey Installer downloading the PI campaign and MultiplayerMissionPack and at least those work successfully. Only the mediavps on the Installer are corrupted.
Title: Re: Installation problems

I'd say HaloBuff's problems lie elsewhere. I'm currently downloading the mvps to check if it really is something on his end.

Yes, all downloads tried form the links provided in your post up there.

List of failed unzips using WinRAR:
*FSPORT*
fsport3_1_1 :: 58592kb
warble_fs1  :: 39,998kb
stu_fs1        :: 73,584kb
tango_fs1    :: 81,874kb

*New Media VPs*
MV_Advanced :: 154,321 - think I can go without that one...

all sizes shown in win xp explorer tile view. Those are for the archives.

Can anyone just ftp me these silly things? I have Google Talk and Limewire.

Just tried out the Turey Installer downloading the PI campaign and MultiplayerMissionPack and at least those work successfully. Only the mediavps on the Installer are corrupted.

The installer itself won't unpack right (the download from his site). It will unpack somewhat in that it give me a file, but what does, won't launch.

Post by: The E on July 06, 2009, 05:44:47 pm
Okay, where exactly did you download those from? I just downloaded MV_Advanced from fsmods.net without problems. Unpacked just fine.

Also, DO NOT USE THE INSTALLER.
Title: Re: Installation problems

Try unpacking with 7-Zip. Link in my sig.

2, I won't

Don't yell at him!

Okay, what suffix do the files have, Halobuff? Are you using winzip to open them? As cole said, you may need 7zip.

If that doesn't work I'll get you direct links.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 05:52:29 pm
Ok, I tried the ones from SpecterGames, or whatever. All but the Advanced and Complete work. Can I do without Advanced? And that doesn't solve the FsPort problems.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 05:55:00 pm
Ok, windows just displays them as WinRar files, no suffix on the archived ones. I'll try 7zip on a failed one...
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 05:58:59 pm
Ok, 7-Zip failed on MV_Complete too.

Can anyone just email me an uncorrupted one? this is getting no where.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: The E on July 06, 2009, 06:01:35 pm
I'm sorry, but something is going wrong on your end. I just downloaded all the separate mediavps (from fsmods.net), as well as all the fsport files from wherever they are hosted, and they all unpacked fine and without errors using 7-zip.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 06:08:07 pm
DAMN!

*sorry*

I'm going to go do dinner for now. I'll restart my computer and try again in a bit. Once I get this working, there's going to be 4 copies of my entire Freespace folder on my backup drive!
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: General Battuta on July 06, 2009, 06:09:15 pm
This link is confirmed non-corrupt. (http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_Complete.7z)

Hrm. The file is large. And anyway, if the problem is on your end, I'm not sure how to get it to you without it becoming corrupt.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 06:49:39 pm
Thanks. Would a wireless 801.11n have anything to do with it? I'm thinking about switching to another laptop if this doesn't work. Still can't get the Fsport ones working, but I'll try another laptop that is on an Ethernet cable.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: General Battuta on July 06, 2009, 06:50:38 pm
If you've got an Ethernet jack, port, and cord, try plugging in to the Interwebs that way.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: Jeff Vader on July 06, 2009, 06:59:42 pm
**** the Installer.

Links in this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,47640.0.html) have proven to be reliable. If they fail, your computer has serious issues and you should do something about it.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:00:08 pm
I'll try that, downloading that last 'uncorrupted file' right now. If it doesn't work, I'll try the other laptop that is cabled.

One small measure of relief: Found a basic install of FSO on my external hdd! So no matter how screwed up this one gets, I can replace it with 3.6.9 builds, and a 3.6.10 experimental which is what it was at before all this junk.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:00:55 pm
I've had problems with corruption before, but never this bad!
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: The E on July 06, 2009, 07:07:24 pm
Umm. Using 3.6.9 is a bad idea. Better go with 3.6.10RC3 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,63492.0.html) all the way, as it incorporates tons of bugfixes, not to mention being the only build that is supported for Multiplayer.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:10:53 pm
Never tried multiplayer... But that's how long it's been since I updated it. And seeing how THIS is going....
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: Jeff Vader on July 06, 2009, 07:13:18 pm
I know for a fact that 7-Zip warns of damaged (corrupt) files if the download has been interrupted. If this could occur because of a wireless connection, a logical course of action would be to try a wired connection.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:23:21 pm
Ok, I'm trying to download all the broken ones on another machine for now. MV_Complete just messed up again, 7-zip won't even open/start it, warning is immediate. I've got RC3, but it's the one that messed up with the original ghost ship in the first place - which is why I went looking for new mediavps in the first place!

Just so I have this straight:
Once the complete set of FSPort is gathered,
1 delete prior FSPort and FSPort-mediavps folders and over-write them with new 3.1.1
2 install new mediavp set (MV_Complete ones) in ...where?

(RC3 already installed and working...somewhat due to old vps)
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: General Battuta on July 06, 2009, 07:24:33 pm
Okay, your build (RC3, in this case) is totally independent from your MediaVPs.

However, you will place MV_Complete in your 'mediavps' folder.

Could we get a screenshot of your FS2 directory?
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:29:14 pm
Give me a minute, I'll do it once I quit moving some files around (I'm getting some of the MV files working)
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:36:52 pm
Ok, screenshots of just now...

Still don't have fsport/fsport-mediavps complete yet, waiting on other pc to download them AGAIN....
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: The E on July 06, 2009, 07:39:11 pm
Your mediavps folder...You should delete all the mp-710 stuff.
As for your main folder, you should delete most, if not all, the different engine builds you have there. 3.6.10RC3 is the only one that non-developers really need. Also, the FSPort-str stuff should go into the fsport-str folder. Having it in the main directory will just screw things up.

As an afterthought, download this tool (http://www.spadixbd.com/freetools/jdirprint.htm), point it at your FreeSpace directory and tell it to do a fully recursive directory listing.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:42:05 pm
Ok, deleted those. Let me check other computer for MV_Advanced and the fsport stuff.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: colecampbell666 on July 06, 2009, 07:52:23 pm
Are you using a download manager/accelerator? As the general said, try a wired connection. Maybe you have a virus on your network.
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 07:55:24 pm
Ok all fsport stuff is DONE! It all worked.

Unfortunately, MV_Complete died again. - downloaded from hard-lined machine from that link on page 2.

Individually, I have MV_Core, MV_Assests, MV_Effects, and mv_music installed. What am I missing other than MV_Advanced?

*Side note: Anyone know how to edit the content in 'right click' menu for Windows XP? I've got WinRar, 7-Zip, PowerISO, OpenWith, and Scan With AVG Free all in it, and they are constantly trading places (order from top to bottom), and I'd like to push them into their own sub-menu. Any pointers?

Also for the extra Vasuda cutscene, it tells me to:

then modify the "freespace.fc2"-campaign-file this way:
add  the filename under mission options of mission "sm2-10a" into "briefing cutscene"

Where do I find that file?
Title: Re: Installation problems
Post by: The E on July 06, 2009, 08:07:43 pm
It seems (and I stress the seems part) to be everything you need.

As for your context menu, I'd say uninstalling winRAR or 7-zip (Personally, I prefer 7-zip, since it's absolutely free) would help clean it up a bit....

To modify that file, you'd need to open up the fsport3.1.1.vp in a vp editor (like maja or vpview), extract that file and edit it.
I'm pretty sure, however, that there is a modified version of that file floating around here somewhere...

Side note: You do know that you can edit your posts, right? Double posting is evil.

Post by: HaloBuff on July 06, 2009, 08:16:03 pm
Well, it was like 5 minutes later, and no one had responded to the first question yet...and you do keep responding while I'm typing.

So I can go without MV_Advanced right? Because I think my ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 +2GB mem and AMD Turion X2 can't keep up with it anyway, it has a tough time showing the Galatea as it is...

I have that same setup, and you should be able to go with it. Of course the card on that setup died before 3.6.10, so I may be wrong.

I can FTP the real file to you, what's your IP? (for LimeWire)

Also: I highly recommend Google Talk - great IM, VoIP, and FTP program. Just drag/drop a file into the chat box, and instant download option for recipient. Also, the Google Chrome browser blows IE8 out of the water, haven't tried Firefox though, I'm hooked on Chrome.
