Title: The Inferno Articles
Post by: Snail on July 16, 2009, 02:38:38 pm
The Wiki is overflowing with them. Do we really need so many of these things?

Ship articles, or other stuff?

Articles like 'The Ricochet Effect' should be consolidated.

I must have somehow missed all of them.

How did you manage that? They're everywhere!

It's because people of other projects weren't adding articles about *their* projects, even those that were released, except for Inferno, Blue Planet...  and... that's it?

It'd rather draw project leaders' attention to the Wiki as opposed to trimming Inferno-related contents.

One of the great things about Wikis is that they do not, excepting ridiculous levels of participation we're never likely to reach/need, generally overflow with anything. I think the question should not be "Do we really need them" but rather "What would we gain by getting rid of them?" If the answer is "Very little" then why not simply leave things as they are?

I wasn't thinking of getting rid of them, I was rather thinking of bringing them all into just a few big articles, so we'd have "List of Ship Classes in Inferno" rather than having them scattered all over the place.

This would fix the fact that most Inferno articles seem to be borderline stub-articles.

Burn them all! Let no remnant of this taint remain!

No offense, but this does seem like it's basically just you reveling in the spoils of your perceived victory over Mobius. And that's kind of stupid. All you've won is the "avoid getting perma-monkeyed on the forum and IP-banned on the wiki as long as possible" game. Not to say Mobius didn't have it coming, but ... don't get too full of yourself

I think his idea of compiling all the Inferno ships into one big list is better than having all these random stubs floating about, I guess.

You could just have a list full of redlinks. :)

Mobius was banned from the Wiki for a reason - If he wasn't causing damage to the Wiki, then why was he banned? Surely he was banned because he caused some damage, I'm just trying to repair that damage.

Goober said he was "monopolizing" the Wiki. I can't see any better example than sticking pages of his mod in every conceivable place. If that ain't monopolizing, I don't know what is.

[EDIT]Okay, I have just checked the Wiki, and I realized that what I was trying to say was factually incorrect.

So, what would this list look like? Will there be a place for Veteran Comments or will it just be the tech descriptions plus pics?

[EDIT2]About them being borderline stubs: Some of them are like articles of canon ships, minus Vet Comments and maybe a pic. However, there are sections that are just empty (they say" N/A" or "To be added later."), let's get rid of those and they'll look better. The GVCa Tanen (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GVCa_Tanen) article is great. It'd be a pity to see it go.  A typical INF ship article is like this one (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/EAI_Lycaon). Snail, do you have these kind of articles in mind?

I still think that getting rid of them is an unneccesary thing. I mean, they're wiki articles. They don't get in the way, or take up space or do anything particularly annoying or disruptive during normal use of the wiki. It's not as though I'm getting flooded with Inferno articles while I'm looking up, say, the Bombardment of Vasuda Prime, or the damage stats of a BFRed. But if I did want to look up something about an Inferno ship, I'd be able to find it. As long as they all have the canon warning, and it's obvious they refer to the Inferno mod only, then what's really wrong with them?

TBH, I think I agree with Topace's original statement. The problem isn't that there're too many Inferno articles, it's that there aren't enough articles from other campaigns.

Well, how about instead of getting rid of them, actually improving them and making them proper articles instead of empty placeholders as they are now? Really, it's this influx of empty articles that are annoying me, not the fact it's from one mod or another. If someone created hundreds of articles from a variety of mods with no info on them I'd be reacting the same way.

What he said. There aren't terribly many that I've encountered.
