Title: Linux client
Post by: dagger on July 18, 2009, 12:32:32 pm
Hey,

Would it be possible to add linux client as well? Currently I have to run a game under wine and that's less than perfect solution.

If you don't have resources to do it, I could gladly help.

Thanks,
Rob

There are linux native executables here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,63492.0.html). You'll need to do some work to get the Linux Launcher to work, but all that is explained in the relevant threads.

The Launcher can also be skipped entirely. Most, if not all, things that the Launcher does can be done with command-line flags.

Will there be, in the future, an easy to install Linux Version. Maybe in the repos of the major distros Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat and Suse?

The main campaign will include easy to install versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux yes.
We'll make sure of that.

Having no easy to install Linux version of the prologue was an unfortunate oversight. but as the guys already said.. there are Linux native builds around (please use version 3.6.9. The newer build will most likely not be able to run the prologue.
There should also be some kind of launcher around for those, but you should be able to get around without it. But make sure you use the -wcsaga command line flag!

For the upcoming campaign we'll try to provide a custom made one-fits-all-Saga-launcher programmed in C# so it will run on all platforms supporting .NET Mono (which should by now be preinstalled in most Linux distributions)

how can people sign up to volunteer to help. I personally wouldn't mind maintaining the Gentoo Linux ebuild package.

What do you mean by "help" and "maintaining"?

Sure that's exactly what i meant I am willing to maintain an ebuild (package file) for Gentoo Linux.
The only catch is Gentoo is a custom compiled from source Linux distro so i will have to make it download and compile the freespace open engine and add the patches to turn it into wcsaga.
the big question there is should it be two ebuilds (e.g. one for freespace open, and one for wcsaga) or just one ebuild.
