Title: Retail FS2 missions in FRED?

I am hoping to design quite an in depth first mission for (potentially) a new campaign and I require information contained within quite a few of the standard freespace 2 campaign missions. To save me having to play it through again with a notepad, is it possible to load these missions up in FRED from the freespace directory (i cant find any of them) of download them from somewhere?

Yes, but you have to extract them from their respective vps first. maja or VPMage are good tools for that.

Ah cool thanks dude. Erm I downloaded the program and it says you need to browse for the 'vps' but all of my freespace directories (not inc. user created data) are empty? Do you know why this may be?

Just open the program, surf to your \freespace2\ folder and open a .vp file of your choice.
